How To Tie Pointe Shoes Ribbons | Lazy Dancer Tips

Ribbons are the support to the shoe and the ankle but should never be too tight to hurt the Achilles (the main tendon at the back of the heel).
There are different types of ribbons too nowadays, I absolutely love the ones with the elastic in the middle. They didn't exist when I started ballet.
When I discovered them they changed my life and helped me out with a chronic ankle injury that I had for the past 10 years. The ribbons are strong but they have a give, which helps a great deal with the natural movement of the ankle and activation of the right muscle without restraining too much.
Start with your foot flexed on the floor, start with the inside ribbon (the longest one between the two) and wrap it around the ankle 1 and 1/2 times. Hold it down. Do the same with the outside one (the shorter on). Tie a knot in the gap between the ankle bone and the Achilles, therefore it won't hurt you. I usually do a double knot, better safe than sorry.
There shouldn't be too much excess material in case chop it off otherwise the knot will look bulky around the ankle. Tuck in the knot and the loose ends.

+sportskannone1990 yes I would definitely get blisters. I usually use toe pads but for this video I just put the shoes on, I wouldn't have bare feet for a show, too painful... I use the silicon Bloch toe pads which are squishy and comfortable. Back in the days (before I built up calluses ) I got lots of blisters and bleeding toes and used to tape toes and pad them with wool . Now I kind of got used to the pain ... ;) everyone has got a personal way to make their shoes comfortable and took me years to master the trick ;)

I use this video to help my students learn how to tie their pointe shoes as they usually do all kinds of crazy things. This was very helpful. The only variation I teach is that I like them to tie them standing up so the weight is on the leg, and then they can't tie them too tight.

+BookGal lol you should alway leave a bit extra when you chop the ribbons just in case. How short is too short ? To save the ribbons you can always make your own " elastic" ribbons. Cut them in half and saw In between an elastic (about 3/4 cm), therefore it won't be too tight around the ankle and won't cause you injuries. I'll try to send you a pix!;) ciao 😘😘🐒

Hi! So recently I got pointe shoes and sewed everything on. I've only been using them for about two weeks and then got told I cut my ribbons too short. I don't really want to undo hours of work and buy new ribbons (as now I don't have enough). I noticed in this video segments of your ribbons are kind of "sewed together". Should I do that (extend segments of ribbon onto the existing ribbon I have right now)? Does it give enough support? Does it snap off easily? So sorry about all these questions😂

I did mine with elastic in the middle, therefore the ribbons are tight but still have a give when moving. Much better for the tendon and ankle in general. You need to find an elastic that has the same width as the ribbon and sew a segment in the middle. Otherwise you can always buy them already made. :) Love Alessia

Hi J, thank you for the kind comment! These are Bloch Heritage, but i had them made for me from Bloch Aus. I had the sides cut down so they would follow the line of my foot rather than going straight to the heel. I have very small feet and my arches are not so prominent , therefore i had to find a way to get a good line. :D Ciao Alessia

Where did you get the ribbon? I have Achilles tendonitis and they flare up whenever I am on pointe. The ribbon got recommended to me by other dancers.

If i don't remember wrong these are Gaynors, but i know that Bloch does the same ones too, with the elastics in the middle! They really saved my ankles! Highly recommend them!

C&A Productions you cut the ribbon in half and saw on an elastic of 3/4 cm. But there are eibbons that are already sold that way. Bloch has those ribbons I think.

I hate ribbons. Can I just put on my elastics and wear my point shoes without them? I use the criss cross method, so the shoe is very well fitted.

You can, as long as your ankles are super strong. The ribbons are meant to be there to support as well as keeping your shoes in place. I used to wear elastics only too and still do sometimes, but only because I know i'm strong enough to control shoes and muscles and it's not the other way round. The moment you are not in control of the shoe, that's when injuries happen. :) Ciao Alessia
