I’ve always wondered how important this knot is (on the spool), surely it’s just a case of making sure the line is on the spool and once you’ve reeled on 100m+ of line that knot is never getting bothered? Am I missing something? Genuine wondering of an overthinker, love all of your videos!!

The reason behind using a knot isn't because you will use all the line on the spool. It's because if you drop the reel into deep water with the bail arm open you will try and retrieve the lost reel by pulling on the line. The knot will enable you to do so. Without a knot you will lose the reel.

I always use a blood knot on my spool. Bit instead of wrapping 4 or 6 times, then going bck through the loop I go again bck through the other loop I just made to for extra security. There is no knot more secure

The biggest realisation I got from this is that I should always just take the spool head off to make my knot makes things a lot easier when there is no bar in the way and its not rotating 😅

Remember to take it off in such a way that when you put the spool back on, you can just reel the new line directly onto the spool.

Be careful if using braid. If not done perfectly it will cause (Ghost Drag). Make sure the line is tight as possible to the spool.

Yes, but when spooling with braid put some monofilament on your spool first or else the braid could slip when striking :)

I’m not a fan! as it significantly weakened the line! Try a clove hitch on the spool then finish with a uni knot or just wrap the spool a couple of times then tie a uni! And on a spinning reel the uni can be tied prior to looping the spool. For example using 12lb mono The arbour knot will break at around 9-10 lbs and the uni depending on the line type typically will be 95% even higher on some line but lesser if incorrectly tied or poor quality line,so expect much closer to 12lb if using a reasonably strong line like trilene or even stren as I just tested to confirm my memory of previous testing!

I tie any size diameter spool hub knot with a proper fig8 or uniknot! Wind the line around the spool Three times, then form knot, pull wet line knot Slowly down onto spool by moving knot from one Side direction, then to opposite Side, repeat! If my main line is thin, then I double the line and tie knot I choose! Have to tie very carefully with doubled line!... The knot Will pop off if just pulled straight down!.... The wider the spool hub, like on centre pin reels, the easier knots will pop off!... My knots I tie like that Will Not slip !!!! 🎣

Don’t take your reel off! I ruined a perfectly good $70 reel by removing the reel. The drag system stopped working. My own mistake. Nothing to do with this video. !

@@jamesa6272 very odd. I’ve taken off spools and disassembled my own reels to clean them and every one of them has had a spring clip keeping the drag stack in place. Something odd happened. I wouldn’t be afraid to try again. Google a schematic of your reel if you don’t have the one that came with the reel. It will tell you how things should go together. Compare the drawing to the actual reel and see if a part got lost. Best of luck.
