I graduated HSWT (Hobart) in 1990, had numerous bench TIG jobs building motorcycle frames and swingarms as well as hot rod fab in central California. I watched your video with some hesitation as there's a ton of how-to-TIG videos by guys who shouldn't be teaching at all- and you're absolutely right: you need the proper foundation, theory and fundamentals. Now, 34 years later and a couple of successful businesses under my belt, I want to dedicate the time on this very perishable skill. Your theory, technique and teaching style are SOLID. I look forward to taking your classes. No matter one's experience, it is a perishable skill and you're the best I've seen. I wish you the best success, and thank you for what you're doing!

I love the checkpoint thing! As a motorcycle builder, I get asked for tips all the time and all I can really say is "well, try to build it how you want, and if it sucks, do it again until it's good". Your checkpoint thing is a much more articulate and friendly way of putting that lol.

I feel I'll learn even more by taking your 3 hour lesson plan, so thanks for taking the time to put these types of videos together...your style of teaching is very easy to understand and follow along, so thanks heaps.

@PacificArcTigWelding Hey Dusty, thanks for that. You have just made me realise that I need to get a new welder to do ally!! My current one is DC only... In the UK no one supplies the Everlast range which appear to be really good value machines. This means I will have to import. I can't afford the Typhoon range, but do you happen to know about the 200DV or 210EXT? A good topic for a video would be what to look for in a welding machine - in my case for all-round use... Thanks for what you do.

Technically you can tig weld aluminum with DC current. I think its straight polarity I cant recall, but you burn up the tungsten consumable really fast. I've done it while experimenting.
@georgebuck2269
@georgebuck2269 6 ай бұрын
That's the original TIG process for aluminum, before they invented AC machines. Use DC straight polarity with 2% percent sharpened tungsten, using Helium. The same setup for steel. It's used to weld small brackets on medium to heavy aluminum plate, such as one to two inch plate. It makes a good weld but it will have a black soot on it. You then use a stainless wire brush to remove it. It does not affect the tungsten and I was using the old transformer machines.
@nickhlawka7073
@nickhlawka7073 5 ай бұрын
@@georgebuck2269 Actually No. I used Argon and there was No soot. It was a clean weld. Your thinking of something different.
@georgebuck2269
@georgebuck2269 5 ай бұрын
@@nickhlawka7073 The welding boss where I worked insisted I do all the thick plate using 100% helium, which was one inch thick that way. I was in training for welding DC straight polarity on aluminum so I did it his way. It worked, beside the fact I never heard of the technique before. I suppose Argon would of given a nice clean weld but never had the chance to try it. I was welding small 1/8 X 1.00 thick brackets to one inch plate, 3 foot square. No MIG welding allowed the customer specified the TIG - DC process.

Great videos, I'm still struggling to get my welder set up. I am using the torch button and not the pedal set up. I keep burning through the coupons. I bring down the amps and still burn too hot. I'm a bit lost as to why. I will try practicing with the pedal. Is the heat different with pedal versus torch button??

Genuinely confused here. In your video your running ground on positive and lead on negative. My apologies if im missing something. If i google search what polarity to run aluminium tig its reverse polarity or opposite of what you are running. Any direction on this would be amazing! Also greetings from australia!

Are you able to weld brass ? Do you run ac or dc on brass ? And what rod would be the best?
@georgebuck2269
@georgebuck2269 6 ай бұрын
DC is the setup for all metals except aluminum. Most shops cut the filler rod from a sheet of thin brass. All metals are TIG weldable except zinc which is the plating used on galvanized steel. The short list: steel, aluminum, stainless, copper, brass and titanium. And you can only use Argon or a mix of Argon/Helium for TIG welding. Argon/CO2 is only used for MIG.

Did you clean the aluminum before welding?
@georgebuck2269
@georgebuck2269 6 ай бұрын
Aluminum is the only common metal that has to be free of all oil, grease, paint, gum from labels and any anodize coating. When you file, grind or use a carbide burr, you also remove the oxide layer which lowers the melt temperature. Most welders also clean it with acetone. Most medium to large welding shops that do military spec aluminum welding have chemical tanks to etch or clean the aluminum in.

Show us how to backup a TIG weld in aluminum, that's where they use a slot in the backup steel so the aluminum weld sinks into it. All metals are TIG weldable except zinc which is the plating used on galvanized steel. The short list: steel, aluminum, stainless, copper, brass and titanium. And you can only use Argon or a mix of Argon/Helium for TIG welding. Argon/CO2 is only for MIG.
