I love these videos because everything always looks so straightforward when they have such a freshly plastered, square room with minimal obstacles, which are good for illustrative purposes, but then I look at my real-world bathroom with all its awkward corners, non-straight walls, sockets, etc. and the job suddenly becomes very daunting again!

So is it better to skim a wall before tiling or is it better to apply tiles directly onto fresh plasterboard?
@ojtechml Жыл бұрын
depends on the tile weight, without a skim; raw plasterboard can hold a lot more weight so for larger format tiles above 20kg/m^2 I wouldn't skim. You can work that out by calculating the weight of one tile and then multiplying it by the number of tiles you need per sqm. I would recommend getting MR plasterboard and then tanking it if its a bath surround. You also need to add say 4kg/m^2 of adhesive/grout weight. But Ideally you should you a tile backer board.

Is it best to tile the whole length of the walls when fitting a new bath or fit the bath onto the wall and only down to the edge of the bath. I would have tiled the complete wall first but i been advised that isn't necessary?
@madfrosty52283 жыл бұрын
It’s better if the whole bathroom is tiled and then everything else gets installed ( obviously the pipes and fittings have to be in place beforehand ) But no one does it like this anymore , it’s cheaper and easier to just bodge the work . The idea was that if you want to change your bath for example you don’t have to retire the whole bathroom , the thing is that today the fashion changes fast and people don’t want quality anymore so cheap bathrooms get installed every few year as the fashion changes .

One small bone to pick with this. I see you're tiling two walls there, they should be tiled together I thought. So as you work from one wall to another, the tiles which are first cut into a corner then have the off cuts added to the adjacent wall to give the appearance that the same tile has gone around the corner.
@PlayGame-vz1pt5 жыл бұрын

YES that's a really good idea! Also number the tiles in case the wall isn't exactly straight, so the smaller bits on one side get the bigger bits on the other! Start at 1 on the bottom and write it on the back of the cut bit in pencil then use them in the right order on the other wall!!

Bare in mind new tilers battens are not all straight as they seem it can be off by a mm or few anywere along timber then when tiling up you can be off on few tiles and spacers don't fit snug. I personally find investment in some aluminium square tubing and rubi adjustable stands really make it just bang on perfect all the time yes there is times when timber has to be used if obstacles are on ground level

@Mariamsadventure Жыл бұрын
Not sure if that would be right, as you often may need to remove and refill them after few years… also, if you measure quite well, there should not be any room for cracks in corners
