Hi I just found your videos recently. I spent 16 years in basement remodeling after starting my own basement finishing business. I left the industry for 4 years and quit the 9-5, back in home remodeling. I love what I do again. I’ve since lined up 4 bathroom remodeling jobs and 3 are mud base pans. I’ve done my own tile work for 12 years prior in the basement business. Enough about me, but I love your videos and your tile partner is a real hands in pro. Awesome videos for us with experience but still needing to learn more. Your one of my favorite tile pros to watch and learn from. Thank you for taking the time to post and help share your knowledge and work. Looking forward to watching more. Dave BDI Remodeling - Chicago

As someone who used to have a bathroom remodeling business myself, I can honestly say that I learn something from every one of your videos I have viewed. Keep up the good work!

Steve, referencing the video at 13:35 -- I can see how the Schluter Kerdi board on the shower wall warps/bends as you push to set the tile. I've always been concerned about the rigidity of these products (Wedi as well) and if they provide sufficient support for the tile installation. After all that work, I wouldn't want to lean on the wall while taking a showed and loose a tile or two. What's your take on these backboards vs the fiber cement HardieBacker board, or even cement floating the wall? Purely in terms of longevity and durability of the installation, waterproofing aside.
@carlhenderson72543 жыл бұрын
Firms up and gets rigid once thinset dries. As long as you have good coverage by collapsing the ridges your good.

Good video overall. One problem though. He states to butt the tile tight in the corners- wrong. You need to leave some gap for expansion/contraction, even if it’s only a 1/16”. One other thing, I don’t know about other tile setters, but I don’t use a notched trowel to butter the back of the tile. A skim coat is all that’s needed- wet to wet. Two notched surfaces is a boat load of thinset.
@HomeRepairTutor5 жыл бұрын
we should have clarified that and referenced the TCNA handbook. Yes, at least 1/16" to 1/8" expansion/contraction in corners or any change of plane

How long can the thinset be exposed after being troweled on to the wall? It seems like it would start to dry rather quickly, effecting the bond. You guys cut tiles as you go, leaving the thinset exposed...of course as I type this, I realize you have to cut as you go because the pieces will all be slightly different. good questions and the pot life of each thin-set is a bit different. That said, Ardex X77 is the thin-set we used and we applied it to the wall as we tiled. You can safely finish a plumbing wall without the X77 skinning over but if it does, simply mix up another batch. It will take each person different amounts of time to do the mixing valve wall but Steve did it in 1.5 hours, primarily due to filming ;)

depends on model and manufacturer but the smart response is that its not worth the research and potential for accidents to save a dollar or avoid having to shop for a legitimate angle grinder wheel. grinders and saws run at very different rpms and a non rated blade could shatter if spun twice as fast as intended. good luck if you try it anyway.

is there a way to do the corners where you don't use caulking? spacer then grout? or is that not recommended. I don't like caulking as it always grows mildew
@HomeRepairTutor8 жыл бұрын
+IWBVS the grout might crack over time but then again, caulking doesn't last forever. So you could try a urethane based grout and if it cracks then replace with silicone. Schluter also makes inside corner profiles that could be a great option, we haven't used them but maybe they warrant a video
@independentinstallations84197 жыл бұрын
just a fyi, we use the schluter profiles on about 90% of our shower installs. The key is knowing your tile thickness when ordering your profiles and knowing which ones are most cost effective for your project. my most popular is the dilex eke profiles which is great for all inside corners especially where floor and walls meet.It has one side that receives the cut ends actually covering your cut then the other tile buts up to the curved 3/16'' pvc movement joint which comes in several colors. use thesearound entire floor to wall then run same profiles up inside wall corners and switch to dilex bwa which will match the 3/16 movement joint and abut tight to ceiling if not tiling the ceiling. if ceiling tiled also again the dilex eke would be easiest.These profiles run about $15.00 per piece and are 98'' long on average. Ive used about all the corner profiles and for cost and actual benefit to install these make a huge difference. I then use the more expensive rondec or quadec profiles around niches and from curb continuing straight up walls using the single leg connecters for inside or outside corners which look great and again save a ton of time not worrying about cutting miters that fit tight.These decorative stainless or aluminum profiles and corer pieces we usually coordinate to matcg the finish of the fixtures ie.oil rubbed bronze/brushed nickel ect....nice video and hope your able to try them out .On a side note have you had any issues with the flexcolor cq turning pinkish in color within first month of use? I loved that grout at first but had 2 jobs start staining and mapei expected me to tell a customer that their $8000 shower less than a month old had mildew growing which stained there significantly more expensive product. Back to only using epoxy on all showers until I feel the urethanes can do what they advertise I guess.. and fusion pro is worst one yet as far as my experience the bostik quartzlock2 is the best premixed out as of now
@hardset-vi3ze6 жыл бұрын
Inside corners always have problems eventually. If grout they crack and many types of caulking will mildew, even the grouts that are made to match the color and texture of the cementious grout. Most inside corners will need some maintenance after 5 or 10 years. Nothing last forever in a wet environment.

Home Repair Tutor ...sry dude but u have so many mistakes while tileing...first of all,always leave a 2 ti 3 mm gap on your vertical ,especialy in showers or bath thubs so when you apllay silicone it could hold.on for something,otherwise after a year or so, sonetimes sooner u will have leakege ad your silicone will rip apart..second thing that ur doing ring,in my opinion ofcourse, is that when u r coming ur glue, u should come in one directon so when u put the tile.on the wall tthe air will be able to go out and not create air pockets,weaking the connection tile/wall...third , if u want to aplly mosaic in between your rows of tile, firs do zhe tileing and leaveing the gap for mosaic..simple measure and instalation afterword will avoid u puting any sort of spacers in between glass mosaic..anddd even thouugh i am a messy tiller, ur are far more messyer...nice job after all ur missery...

Silicone should not be used but grout and sealer or sealer in grout. Silicone will always leak and then the lovely mold forms. No grey should ever be seen in the grout lines or there is a LEAK AND PUTTING SILICONE IS A TERRIBLE IDEA. It's only used a fix after a failure or take out the grout and regrout .

Great video tutorial. Do you always need to use the Ditra membrane when doing mosaic inserts? Thanks you for this video.

+David Falk not all the time, only if the mosaic tile isn't as thick as the main wall tiles 👍

Sorry but if you push the Ditra down behind the tile you have defeated the purpose. The depth becomes the same. but still good video
@coolpop195 жыл бұрын
@@UKBIZNET the ditra was only put where the thinner mosic glass tile was at to make them flush with the other tile
