This was so helpful. I am retired and getting involved in moldel railroading. So many things to solder in this hobby and I have never used a soldering iron in my life. I read about tinning the tip in my instruction booklet that came with my soldering iron but I didn't know what it meant. Your simple tutorial educated me very quickly. I am not ready to tin my iron and begin using it. Never too old to learn and so glad there are guys like you out there that explain simple things for older guys like me. Great, simple tutorial. Order from Amazon. Links in the video description. But the Tinning Flux should be found at any hardware store in the plumbing area, the thinner electronic solders should be found at places like (Radio Shacks) maybe Radio Control Hobby shops or crafting places like Michel's and Hobby Lobby. Check the jewelry making areas.

This is exactly what this is for, remember if the tip is not holding solder, the tip is a consumable. spend the $4 and get a new tip. But if you keep up with it, the tip will last a long time. I'm still using that same tip in the video today.

I have two tips that I’ve used lightly without any sort of prep and I know now after much frustration I need to go through the tinning process. If the tip has been used and is dirty, can I get it hot and clean it with brass wool _then_ do this process or will I have to start with a new tip? Thanks a bunch for sharing this info with us. Two other questions- when you do this on a tip is it set for the life of the tip or will the tinning paste wear off over time? And is the cleaning sponge supposed to be dry or wet? I always have used a dry one but I’m very new to soldering.

Lead free solder and flux can be used for plumbing aka copper pipes etc. where it comes into contact with drinking water. This is electronics so no so worried about leaded solder flux. Note that is a plumbing flux that is why it is lead free.

I'm just getting started too, this shits more complicated than I thought. Just melted a usb c port trying to replace it because the solder wont melt. There can be so many factors. Not very motivating. Edit: brought it in to a repair shop and they said it's silver solder and they need special equipment to replace the port. Would cost a lot unfortunately.

Seems that video was five years ago, I'm still using that same iron with that same tip in the video. Just keep it clean and coated with solder and it should last for years. If you have a tip go bad, it coast $2 to $4 for a new tip.

Thanks for the video. I have 2 questions. 1. I just discovered that there is a product called 'solder paste.' It seems it could achieve the goals of this video, of coating the tip before heating, but without needing to apply corrosive flux which are found in tinning fluxes, and without needing to wrap solder wire that falls off in chunks. What is your opinion? I also always heard warning not to put flux on your solder tip? so it seems the solder paste would help? Thanks. (My idea is to coat the tip with solder paste, while also holding solder wire to the tip as it heats). 2 Also, I am wanting to use a solder that has nickel in it. So I would expect I should use a different type of solder for tinning the tip. I heard to use 63/37 as you want high tin content?

I will just boiler plate this from another source too lazy to type it out. "tinning flux contains ground-up solder flakes, known as tinning powder, that clean, tin and flux most commonly soldered metals, including copper, brass, zinc, galvanized iron lead and tin or copper-coated metals." I'm not a fan of Solder paste as I do not have the control I need or want with a hair of 63/37. As for acid issues I'm still using that same tip in the video and that was 6 years ago. the import thing is to keep the tip clean, make sure it is coated so oxygen can not get to it, AND NEVER TTOUCH IT WIT A WIRE BRUSH, File etc. use a bras sponge and it will last forever so to speak.

I'm gonna give your method a try in just a few minutes. I'm doubtful...

If the tips is corroded or black, solder will not stick. but you are using a gun, a completely different type of soldering vs a pen or smaller iron.

Tips are a consumable, if the tip is oxidized, it is just better to replace it than try and save it.
