I've always done a spray tint when restoring headlights and taillights for friends with rustoleum. I'd sand the original clear completely off and spray with the tint, and then go over with a good, wet layer of 2k clear with 2 or 3 layers. This has always worked for me and given an extremely deep shine after polishing and waxing. And it works with any shade from a light smoke to full blackout.

This combined with some LED bulbs with built-in resistors is a great combo. The LEDs are bright enough to shine through the tint like it's not even there and don't hyper flash due to the built in resistors. And you'll never have to change the bulbs again, which minimizes your chances of scratching or damaging the tint

My Aussie VF series 2 Calais Sports wagon. (Chevy Camaro SS) Has big complex tail lights that have a convex bulge in the middle with a fairly sharp edge at the bottom. The Vivid wrap was near to impossible even with a second person using the heat gun. Smaller flatter tail lights the Vivid wrap would be achievable with patience with another person handling the heat gun duties. I have to resort to using the VHT tint spray with a few coats of gloss clear coat for longevity.

Every light can be tinted with vinyl, and imo it looks way better and has a better finish, plus easier install and last more then the spray. I’ve been doing this for 4 years now and definitely is better than spray
@sorrowdada5 жыл бұрын
OG Smokin nope, the heat will only make it worse in the ones he did because it’s overstretching the vinyl, that specific one he could’ve done it way easier and faster. You only need heat when vinyl can get around with ease. Plus it takes you more time cutting actually than laying the vinyl in those.
@sorrowdada5 жыл бұрын
OG Smokin yes reposition it as many times you want to make it flat, dont use heatgun unless is a really hard curve. Basically hold the vinyl and work your way out slowly laying it down so you dont get any bubbles. Look for ckwraps or justin pate, they are amazing people to learn from.
@sorrowdada5 жыл бұрын
OG Smokin also I recommend if it’s the first time to use a scrap sheet of vinyl and play with it, so you get confident and understand how it works. Believe me I’ve done both of them tints and the vinyl looks way better in person.

The spray lights that I see look dull, you can totally tell that it's sprayed and to dark for me. I just want to go a little bit just to give it a nice look. I can by pre-cut film. Many states have laws requiring a minimal amount of reflective material on the rear of motor vehicles. If you take the time to tint the reflective material within the tail lights, you might have to install cheap looking reflectors. Example - Washington State Law = RCW 46.37.060 - Reflectors - (1) Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer shall carry on the rear, either as a part of the tail lamps or separately, two or more red reflectors meeting the requirements of this section.

Will cleaning with alcohol remove the clearcoat that I have applied to after removing old tint? I may stick with only 3:37 soap and water considering the tint will be applied immediately after old tint removal.

Can you get pulled over for having those lights tint? (Utah state)

If a cop really wanted to be a dick and/or is just looking for a reason to pull you over they might. But then again, they'll find a reason regardless. I've had tinted tail lights for almost 8 years and never gotten pulled over because of them.

This is an awesome video. It makes a difference when the tail lights are has a ton of curves like the 2019 ram 1500 tail lights. When spraying, how do we reduce the tacky and smoothness of the lights?
@EhabHalat5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! When using the spray tint you have to start off with a light coat and then medium coats. Make sure you are about 6-8 inches away from the light and do 50% over lapping coats for smoothest finish.
@damianramey56015 жыл бұрын

Adding a 2k clear coat over the vht nitshades then wetsanding with 2000 grit, then buffing and polishing will come out like a mirror and will make it last a long time. I've done it. I've had trouble applying the film to tail lights and its frustrating but, maybe I just suck at it.

Vvivid vinyl is so stupid easy to lay, and as long as you're happy with the tinting shade they sell I'd do that a million times over spray painting, which tends to be very uneven if you're inexperienced with painting. Removing the film is also really easy if you actually do get pulled over.

Thanks for the video can i ask 2 questions? How does the film hold up against car washes? And how hard is it to lay film down and cut out shapes on the light... Like leaving red exposed and covering the silver?
@EhabHalat4 жыл бұрын
Hey, the film holds up good in car washes as long as its applied properly. You can cut out shapes on the light but you need a steady hand and not too much pressure or you could damage the light lens. I would try to find a pre cut tint with a cut out shape that you want, made for your vehicle.
