I am old, and I recall the rules being different. In the 1980s, I was a soldier stationed in Germany. The protocol was to round the total bill up to the next full mark. After reviewing the bill, one would say "Das stimmt... Marke." Also, one would not address the waitress as "Kellnerin." Cultures and languages change.

Tipping culture confuses me. They say you give a tip when you're provided with a service but tbh I don't really know what that means. Why don't we tip cashiers? They're scanning our items for us. That's a service. In New Jersey, you're not expected to tip your gas station attendant, but they put gas in our car for us. Why don't we tip them? Doctors provide us with possible the most important service there is, and do we tip them? Nope. As far as I know, the people we tip are waiters, bartenders, food delivery people, hairdressers, tattooers, piercers, and hotel housekeeping, but there are probably a few more. I wish we could do away with tipping and just include the money in the bill/check because I often forget to tip since it doesn't make sense to me. I don't care if the service was bad or not, at the end of the day people deserve a livable wage and I don't think their punishment should be to earn less money; they should either do their job better or be fired, in my opinion.

Well, at least here in Latin America it is difficult as usually in restaurants they pay, as a rule, the minimum wage, and they claim that as waiters have tips, they shouldn't complain. It is something hard to fix.

As an Argentine guy, I think the same about this tip culture. It is and was always ridiculous to me as well, 28 years living here and I still don't get why we do it with only certain jobs and not with others or why we don't do it at all. It has no sense.

Its not only ridiculous but rude. Tipping is like something very personal like an opinion or taste. If something is extraordinary thanI mighy consider tipping but otherwise this smells just loke soviet union economy inviting despot tyranners who will rob and betray us

I genuinely don’t understand tipping...someone is already getting paid an hourly wage to do the job they don’t HAVE TO be tipped as well. I work in an office doing customer service, I would never expect the customers I help over the phone/ email to them send me a tip because I’m already getting paid by my company to help them. But sure if you are happy with a service as the customer and you want to tip someone, then of course go for it - but I dislike the expectation of it. I find it especially weird in America.

I found curious that you have interviewed almost only older people. I think if you would interview more younger people/students the answer would in general be a bit different. I have lived one year in Germany as student without any funding and I would barely have money for anything. Then the tips I would give were just max 1.50 or 2 euro. I have also worked in these kinds of places and I would not at all be mad at younger people that wouldn't tip because I know how it feels to save up all your money to just get a beer on weekends. As an employer you kind of can feel if someone's not tipping because they're rude or because they're broke :)

Here in Portugal the purpose of tipping is to motivate and reward good service, therefore it would be very unreasonable to tip a person who was negligent or rude. It makes no sense to offer a tip in such cases, in fact an official complaint can be filed instead which is sent to the state's office of consumer arbitration. Conversely, whenever one is pleased with a service, a tip is gladly given of 20%-30% over the cost. Personally I don't see the the point of compulsory tipping, since it doesn't help improve the quality of the servive and the rapport with the client, it's almost like a socially acceptable extortion to also reward bad service.

I come from Jordan. Usually we give tips in restaurants around 5-10 % when we’re sitting in the restaurant but when taking out normally not. In some restaurants there is a jar next to the cash where you can put tips in if you like but it’s not mandatory. In home delivery it would be considered rude not to give. In taxis not every one does but usually if he said 4,30 for example we give 5.

I wish I could've seen your video the first year I was living in Berlin lol I used to give my tips exactly how I do it in my home country which is the waiter brings you the receipt and you pay the exact amount and then once you are ready to leave then you leave the tip in the table. However in Germany I encountered I did it the same way and after a few times I started noticing a bit of unsympathetic behavior afterwards i thought it could be because they think I was not going to give them any tip....even though I left it on the table right before I left. Afterwards, I understood how it was accustomed. Its interesting how different way of doing things can really change the attitude on people xD

In Brazil it is since a couple of years law regulated. So the restaurants must state it very clear in the menu that they charge up to 10% as service fee, which is later split among the waiters. It comes directly on your bill. You have the option to pay without the 10%, usually the cashiers ask you if you want to pay it. The waiters don't even know if you refused to pay it. But that's considered rude. Some restaurants choose not to charge it. So workers choose wages and tipping policies, and customers can choose among restaurants that charge or don't the extra fee for services. I think this is a good solution. But it's very inconvenient for Brazilians traveling abroad. We are not used anymore to this informal tipping system. So many times we just seem to be rude without even realizing what's going on. 😅

I have visited Germany 4 times so far. From 2002 since now. Are you sure tipping is so strict? I don't remember having tipped in a restaurant (maybe once or twice) and nobody looked at us in a strange way. At least I didn't notice something like that. Maybe because we spoke english and they were lenient to us as foreigners? I don't know. Anyway...in Greece where I come from, tipping is not compulsory. We normally tip to restaurants and cafes, only if the stuff was super friendly or if the food was exceptional. Tips are important for the waiter/waitress because they receive low salary; however, they won't behave bad if you don't tip them, neither will they expect from you to tip. Sometimes women also tip in the hairdresser's on in the nail salon. So Germans expect you to tip...but they never tip when they come to Greece! I know this very well as I work in the tourist industry. How can you explain that??

This past June in Berlin always gave a 10-15 % tip to wait staff if nice and helpful. Must say in the EU in general the service has improved since started going over there in 2003. In Germany as a general rule most wait staff are very professional - unlike the U.S - where they expect a tip even for bad service....keep up the great work with videos.

In my country we sometimes put a 10% service charge straight in the bill, so you don't calculate it. It's part of the charge and is not optional if they charge you 10% service.

Hallo Cari, ein interessanter Aspekt, den ich selbst im Gesundheitswesen beobachtet habe, ist das Hinterlassen "eines Trinkgeldes" von den PatientInnen, meistens an das Pflegepersonal, nach einem stationären Aufenthalt im Krankenhaus. Der Betrag geht dann in die Kaffeekasse der Station und wird verwendet, um fürs Frühstück für das ganze Team zu sorgen...:-) Ganz liebe Grüße aus Österreich

Normalerweise in Schottland (und England) gibt man Trinkgeld mit der Rechnung nur im Restaurants usw., aber in Cafés oder Kneipen gibt es ein "tips jar" auf der Theke, und alles davon ist auf alle Mitarbeiter aufgeteilt, und ich gebe etwas nur wenn der Service oder der Ort mich wirklich gefällt. (es gibt fast keine "Regeln", zumindest nicht heute)

I'm from Montreal, Canada. You normally give 15% in restaurants where you are served at the table but usually not in restaurants where you get food yourself at the counter (ex. Fast food chains, street food, etc.) . Either way, it is not mandatory but to the person's discretion. Taxis, beauty salons, bars, are other businesses where you normally tip.

In Canada, trinkgeld is an income and the server must include it in his salary. The government counts 15% on all sales. So if we don’t give a minimum of 15% , the server must pay it.

In Argentina we do tip, I try to do the 10 per cent rule but mostly people just give "what they have". And you put it on the table before leaving, we dont tip with credit card cause the Restaurant will keep it and not the Kellner. So auf jeden Fall, we tip and we leave it on the table :)

In Estonia it is the same. We leave it on the table when leaving, if we want. And we leave what we have. I t always give the taxi driver the next round sum. If it is like 14 euros, I give fifteen etc. i am personally reluctant to tip. Not because of money, but for two reasons: 1. It seems as if I am looking down on someone if I give them money. (as if they were beggars, it is the association I have) 2. Especially in other countries, I never know exactly how to it. However I do, it seems weird. It seems to be such a discreet issue. I think that anyone in any service industry should just be payed a good wage. I think tips are or can be degrading.

Vor allem vielen Dank für die Anstrengungen. In China gibt es kein Trinkgeld, selbst wann die Bedienung in China Tausend Mals besser als in Deutschland ist. Die Kellnerinnen und die Kellner kommen zu den Kunden so langsam, dass man ein halbe Stunde warten kann, nur um zu zahlen. Das macht mich oft sehr wütend. In Serbia and Montenegro we tip everybody. Not only the waiters or taxi drivers, but also, for example people who paint our houses or plumbers etc. I noticed that people becoming more and more hard on the money, but still vast majority tips.. And in smaller towns and villages, if they don't give you tip(money), they may give you a bottle of "rakija" which is strong alcoholic beverage>40%alc, or "prsuta"- high quality dry pig meat.. And while you're working, most likely you'll be eating with members of the family your working for.

Wie viele gibt man Trinkgeld, zum Beispiel im Restaurant, es kommt drauf an wie bedienen die Kellnerin. Zum Beispiel habe ich früher im Restaurant als Kellner gearbeitet und habe normalerweise pro Tag 30, 40$ verdient.

Ich lebe in Indien. In Indien gibt man nicht so oft. Es gibt keine wichtige Regel zum Trinkgeld. Aber in einigen Staaten geben die Gäste überhaupt. Wichtig ist, es von dem Gast anhängt ,was für Gast er ist. Normalerweise gibt man 5-10% der Rechnungssumme.

here in the US, you tip 15-20%, and for good reason. you should NEVER not tip if you've received service (such as food being brought to your table and your waitress/waiter getting your condiments; if you had to get your food and fixings yourself, like at McDonalds, then don't tip). in America, the legal federal wage for a tipped worker (that means they make $50 a month in tips) is $2.83, which is very low and impossible to live on; at that rate, to make $2000 a month before taxes, someone would have to work 700 hours a month. this is because of alcohol prohibition back in the day. restaurants couldn't pay their servers with the diminished profits, so servers started taking tips, and we just kept the system. it is broken in almost every way, and even though it's a nice way to show someone they've done a good job, it doesn't help them ensure they can bring enough money home every month to meet all of their expenses. encourage fair wages across your community and eliminate the dependence on tips

In der Slowakei ist es genauso wie in Deutschland ... von 5 bis 10%. Aber persönlich übertrage ich die Qualität der Service und laut sie gebe ich das Trinkgeld. Wenn der Kellner oder die Kellnerin nicht nett oder unhöflich ist oder wenn das Essen oder Trinken nicht schmeckt, sollte man es übertragen. 🙂

In Hong Kong kommt es darauf an. würde sage dass die meisten Leute normaleweise kein Trinkgeld geben aber für manche Restaurants gibt es schon ein extra 10% ‘Service Fee' auf dem Rechnung.

Ja, ihr habt schon mal im Video diese Sache besprochen, aber ja, in den USA gibt man normalerweise relativ viel Trinkgeld im Restaurant, wahrscheinlich wegen des schlechten Gehalts der Bedienung in den meisten Restaurants. Restaurantbesitzer nehmen an, dass die Gäste Trinkgeld geben werden, und deshalb zahlen sie das Personal ganz wenig.

Interessant, ich als Deutscher Mitte 50 bin ohne Trinkgeld geben aufgewachsen. Auf jeder Rechnung steht das Bedienung (Service) im Betrag enthalten ist. Wenn das Essen gut war, müsste ich ja der Küche und nicht der Bedienung das Geld zukommen lassen. Aufrunden der Rechnungssumme mache ich nur bei Barzahlung, damit es schneller geht mit dem eh langsamen Kassieren. Nach einem Jahr in USA habe ich mir Trinkgeld etwas angewöhnt, der Friseur bekommt immer das gleiche, was ich bei meinem Stammfriseur zahle, auch wenn es ein Angebit wäre. Im Hotel oder bei einer Spedition tu ich mir schwer mit Trinkgeld. Aber wenn es gut läuft dann gebe ich was.

Also in Restaurants in Litauen normalerweise man auch ungefähr 10% Trinkgeld gibt, aber lasst man das auf den kleinen Teller, auf den man das Ruckgeld erhalten hat. Sogar wenn man mit Karte bezahlt, lasst man ein Paar Euro Münzen auf den Tisch.

In Rumanien, mann gibt Trinkgeld in der Restaurant und vielleicht fur die Taxifahrer. Das Trinkgeld ist irgendwas 10% aber man hat kein Bedurfnis, Trinkgeld zu geben. Bist du zufrieden mit dem Service? Ja, kannst du Trinkgeld geben. Dann, wenn du Trinkgeld gibst, z.B. 50 fur eine Quittung von 45, hinterlasst du einfach eine 50 Note und geht aus, die Kellnerin ( oder der Kellner ) musst nicht wissen, dass du Trinkgeld verlassen hast. Oder du konntest zu ihr/ihm sagen, dass du keine Anderung brauchst.

Ich wusste nicht dass man in Deutschland Trinkgeld geben muss! Ich komme aus Rumanian und hier geben wir nicht so oft Trinkgel, zumeinst wenn die Bedinung besonders gut war. Ich habe in den USA gewohnt und ich finde es sehr schlecht dass die Angestelten brauchen die Trinkgeld um über die Runde zu kommen.

Es gibt in China sehr selten Trinkgeld,bisher habe Ich nur schon nicht mehr als 2 Mals erlebt,man Trinkgeld gibt zu sehen.(vielleicht auch aufgrund des Bezahl per Handy)Trotzdem kann der Kellner/die Kellnerin normalerweise verstehen wenn du Trinkgeld geben möchtest,denn es gibt in Chinesisch ein Wort „小费（xiao fei）” für Trinkgeld.damit kannst du so sagen ,dass das zusätzliche Geld 小费 für dich sei :) Sonst wird es wahrscheinlich zurück gegeben.

Das erste mal dass ich in Berlin war, habe ich nicht gewusst, dass die Deutsche trinkgeld geben. Ich hatte ein paar peinliche Situationen mit den Kellner. Das zweite mal habe ich die Trinkgeldprocess gekennt, aber so oft ist der Service schleckt in Berlin dass ich Trinkgeld zu geben nicht gewollt habe.

Hallo allerseits. Ich bin aus Kasachstan [Kazakhstan, GUS-Raum] - wir machen keine Kopfschmerzen darüber. Denn bei uns ist das Trinkgeld in der Rechnung schon enthalten und sieht ungefähr so aus: Rechnungs-Betrag + 10% Bedienung => Totalbetrag. Das größte Trinkgeld, das ich bisher je gegeben habe, war am Heiligabend. Meine Schwester und ich haben nach der Kirche gebruncht unsere Kellnerin war richtig richtig nett und sorgfältig trotz des Frühstücksansturms, weswegen ich ihr $20 Trinkgeld gegeben habe. Das war in gewisser Weise mein Weihnachtsgeschenk an sie. :D

I don't understand why there's a custom to give tips to people working in gastronomy, but never to those working let's say in an ordinary shop with clothes? they both get paid. I only understand the idea of tipping= supporting very young people who struggle to combine their studies with work, but it should never be compulsory like in the US.

Ich gebe Trinkgeld immer wenn es den Service gibt, also wenn ein Kellner oder eine Kellnerin zu meinem Tuch kommt, meine Bestellung gibt und eigentlich alles für mich sorgt, dann natürlich gebe ich Trinkgeld, ungeachtet ob der Service gut oder schlecht war. Dagegen, gebe ich kein Trinkgeld in Bars oder Kneipen wo man selbst an der Kasse bestellt, selbst das Essen zum Tisch bringt usw. Vielleicht wenn der Service ausgezeichnet war, dann gerne :)

Ach mein Lieblingsthema, weil ich in Deutschland darüber etwas erlebt habe :) Ich komme aus der Türkei und war letztes Jahr in Düsseldorf für eine Weile um einen '' Deutsch für Mediziner'' Kurs zu besuchen. Also, an einem Wochenende haben wir mit meiner Freundin unsere Freunde in Berlin besucht, die damals für Erasmus dort waren. Vor 3-4 Stunden unseres Zuges zurück nach Düsseldorf, wollten wir uns in einem Cafe setzen um diese Zeit zu verbringen. Es gab ungefähr 12 von uns und wir haben ein Paar Kuchen gegessen, was getrunken. Alles war schön und in Ordnung. Als wir die Rechnung bezahlt haben, konnten wir leider nicht so viel Trinkgeld geben, weil wir Studenten waren und aus einem Land kamen, wo ein Euro damals 5 Liras galt.(Ich kann nicht mehr folgen wie viel es ist, weil es immer steigt wann unser dumme 'Ihrwisstwer' etwas sagt und macht hahaha :)) Die Kellnerin war damit unzufrieden und am Ende hat sie gefragt: '' Woher kommt ihr?'' Ich habe gedacht, dass sie uns verstanden hat. Nachdem wir sie beantwortet haben, hat sie gesagt: '' In Deutschland tippen wir!!!!'' Ich war so schockiert und bisschen auch frustriert. Jeder kann leider nicht so viel tippen und trotzdem darf man ab und zu in einem Cafe was essen oder trinken. Natürlich sind alle Kellner nicht so, sondern viele sind sehr nett aber man muss auch bemerken, dass es solche Situationen gibt. Das ist etwas unprofessionell von der Bedienung. Es ist richtig, dass man in Deutschland ein Trinkgeld gibt, aber es ist letztendlich freiwillig und man sollte respektieren, wenn der Gast, aus welchem Grund auch immer, dieses nicht tut.

Erstens, bekommen wir eine Rechnung, die als kleines..ich weiß nicht..Büchlein aussieht, dann bezahlen wir mit dem Bargeld oder mit der Ec-Karte ...und der Kellner oder die Kellnerin geben es zurück und legen es auf dem Tisch, dadurch können wir Trinkgeld in dieses kleine Büchlein legen 🙃 Die Regel über 10 Prozent haben wir nicht. Es hängt vom Wunsch des Menschen ab. Aber gewöhnlich geben wir 100-150 RUB. Studenten haben kein Geld, deshalb geben sie weniger Trinkgeld 😄😄😄 Danke, das war interessant! Weil ich immer dachte, dass es in Deutschland verboten wird, Trinkgeld zu geben!

Die 10 Prozent sind keine Regel, eher 5%. Ein Trinkgeld sagt, dass man mit dem Service zufrieden war. Du must kein Trinkgeld geben. Wenn das Trinkgeld aber zu niedrig ist, dann kann das etwas negativ ausgelegt werden. Unter 1 Euro sollte man normalerweise im Restaurant nicht Trinkgeld geben.

Ich bin aus Weißrussland. Ein Trinkgeld wird von uns gewönlich gegeben, wenn ein Essen lecker ist oder eine Kellnerin (ein Kellner) gut arbeitet. Das Trinkgeld 5-10%. Ich zahle oft mit einer Kreditkarte.

In Griechenland gibt man Trinkgeld nur wenn die Bedienung gut ist. Der Kellner bringt die Rechnung, man bezahlt das and danach last das Trinkgeld auf dem Tisch. Wenn man Trinkgeld bekommt muss man in der Regel nein sagen,wenn man nett sein will, und danach bekommt das Trinkgeld. Aber wen man kein Kellner ist z. B Tour-guides glauben das Trinkgeld nicht notwendig ist und man unterschaetzt sein Arbeit, dass er berufsstaetig ist

In India, my country, people rarely tip 😜😂. We tip sometimes to delivery guys… and really rich people or very open minded person will tip the waiter.. here, We don't have such thing, but if you'll tip them, they'll be surprised(positively) in normal restaurants and show warm gesture towards you.

Tipping, sigh... Well until the business owners pay their waiters/waitresses a decent wage I always give 20%. Even if the service is "bad", I think it's better to assume that the waitress is just overworked doing too many tables and trying to make it just like anybody else. So tip 'em. If you can't afford to then just give what you can or go to subway. Subway is the bomb! got me through rough times... footlooong, spicy Italian always hits the spot!!!!!!!!!!!!

ich war in der Turkei die lateste woche und ich habe dort für 4 monaten gewohnen und ich hatte keine idee wie kann ich trinkgeld geben , ich hatte 6 mal in einem restaurant gegessen ich wusste dass es gehbt trinkgeld aber ich wusste nicht wie kan ich es geben weil es gebt keine rechnung , ich musste zu dem cashair bezehlen. gebt es jemand der was ich machen sollte wissen.
