I did this to my conure the other day. He was acting all tough and fluffed up - bitting my fingers. Introduce something he’s scared of and he suddenly turned into the most calm and loving bird ever.

I’m pretty sure my Conure would just go from attacking me to attacking the dinosaur. I wear a hat that she rides on and is happy. I haven’t been able to trust her on my shoulder in almost 6 months. 😭 I’m researching everything, applied everything and I’m just not getting through to this crotchety little dinosaur of my own. We’ve had her a year and she’s gone from sweet, loving and cuddly to this little bratty velociraptor in feathery drag.

@@snagman3waloma actually yes. We stuck out with her and stayed consistent with the training. We also ADJUSTED HER FOOD. She’s been on roasted, in-shell hemp seeds but we added a pinch of sunflower seeds and removed the Nutriberri seed balls. I also too to wearing a Neck sock when she sits on my shoulder. That way she can still perch on my shoulder and just rack up exp while also not being tempted to go for my ears. The idea being that she stops associating my shoulder with a place to lash out. The biggest fix for her is the food. (She was on pellets before we got her, and we bought the same kind she was fed at her last home, (recommended by vets of course) But she was miserable. We started looking into and offering other things to eat. Also discovered the pellets she was in were mostly corn 🌽 👎 Every guide you read for feeding them says corn is a huge hormonal no no. Sunny would eat anything high in protein, eggs, boiled chicken... then my mom offered her some hemp seeds that she would mix in her breakfast. Sunny DEVOURED THEM. So a more than a year later and more of the aforementioned hormonal rough patches, as well as sticking with the training from “parrot tricks” she’s finally turning back into our little feathery snuggle buddy. ❤️

@@diaryofagoat-lass1023 thats amazing isnt it re: diet! I too have heard many people saying to get the diet right as a baseline. Im feeding seed mix (and only leaving in abt 4 sunflowers but i also treat with sunflowers when they’re out). Then veggies and small amount fruit. Sprouted seed/legumes. And harrisons pellets…but they’re not keen and basically have to feed them moistened or they wont eat. That has corn, peanut and soybean in it. Im constantly questioning if they’re necessary as they really dont take to them. I was thinking of getting TOPS pellets (they’ve only just recently been available again in Australia), as they’re most natural and no corn/soy/fillers. Its hard isnt it. What to believe. Glad to hear your little one is on track though! How old is she?

@@snagman3waloma in my years on a farm and working with animals my whole life, their cravings or refusal to eat “normal” foods, it the truest indication of what they need or don’t. Most guides for dog feeding say “fatty foods are toxic and will make your dog sick. my recently adopted dog (we’ve had her two years) came from the city and was exclusively fed kibble. She didn’t know what meat was unless you cooked it. Didn’t even know the pleasure of a raw egg or kibble soup (home made bone stock as a nutritional supplement) We started her on grain free kibble, she gained weight, her coat began to shine. Two years later of being a empty brained “blond bimbo” And we’ve finally been turning some intellectual corners with her. My family hunts so bear with this next part: I shoot a whitetail deer and because I have an old dog as well who thrives on raw meat, my new dog finally decided to try something and all on her own, she suddenly LOVES deer fat! In one month of deer scraps (we save the bones and scraps from deboning) She is no longer a hyperactive little spazz. She doesn’t bark all day long for the heck of it and is becoming less combative with my old dog. If your birds are rejecting the pellets, take that as a sign there’s something in them that doesn’t agree with them. Also, most guides I read and this I agree with, peanuts are SUPER BAD for parrots because of a naturally occurring mould on them. It’s not enough to hurt humans but parrots are very sensitive. Try Pumpkin seeds. 👍 Sunny, my Conure, also some days would flat out reject the pellets she was given. We started worrying she was loosing weight. If you can, try and find “whole roasted, in shell Hemp Seeds” You’ll likely find them in the health food section of any large grocery store. (And no, there are no trippy components in them. Hemp seeds are high in easy to digest fats and protein. Extremely nutritious! 👍

Your conure looks exactly like mine. Prince (my bird) is about 10 months old so he’s a baby and I’m guessing this behavior is pretty common at such a young age. I’ve wanted a conure my whole life. No lie, I’ve read up on and watched so many videos on this breed. I always knew I’d get one. I just wanted it to be the best time, I know they take a lot of effort and time… and about 3 weeks ago I come home and my fiancé has his phone trained on me and obviously recording, and tells me to go look in the room lol Best Xmas gift ever. BUT! I am learning; reading about them and studying their behaviors and all the ways to care for them are NOT the same as actually doing it lol He’s very vocal as soon as I wake up before work, and demands to be acknowledged 😂it’s so cute. But I’ve had to set my alarm in the morning an hour early so I can properly spend time with him and care and make sure he’s set for the day while I’m working. Right now tho, the whole biting my ears, climbing up my head to completely rearrange my hair, hanging down from my hair by his feet and trying to go after my eyelashes (the first time he did this scare the you know what outta me! I thought he was trying to peck my eyes out lol) and biting my neck is really annoying and I have to hold in my frustration and patiently but carefully try to deviate his attention on anything other than MY HEAD lol He’s getting smart to all my tricks so far tho, and one time, I did raise my voice and said “stop biting my ear!” While trying to block my ear with my hands…. And he took that as a challenge! His feathers flared out and he went at my fingers and I was like “oh sh?! he’s scrappy!” I’m going to search for a dinosaur head toy on amazon right now.

Yeah he chilled out pretty quick. Now all we do is point a finger at him if he gets in bite mode - but he really only bites your ears if he’s on your shoulder and needs to poop. So if he nibbles take him to go poop or he might poop on you or he starts to fly away and poops

A glove works better than the dinosaur - he started attacking the dinosaurs after a few months. They certainly have personalities - because he will bite and say Ouch or Stop then he laughs. Now he doesn’t bite to draw blood but just that little pinch. He’s almost 5 now.

@@hxproject aw so the dinosaur head stopped working? Well that’s good to know cuz I haven’t ordered one yet. I have gloves, it’s what we used in the first few days. He hasn’t drawn blood in about two weeks now. I’ve made a lot of progress with him and he trusts me now to just come to the open door of his cage and I’ll know that means he wants up on my shoulder. I don’t even reach or use my hands to grab him. Something I had to tell my fiancé not to do multiple times lol I want him to come on his own free will. And now he does. He will either climb onto my open hand, or my arm or my shoulder. But the bite he gives my ears can still pack a punch. I can’t wait till he gets out of this behavior. The people who hand raised him clipped his wings before my fiancé picked him up. :( so he can’t really fly far, but he will glide. I don’t ever plan on clipping his wings in the future.

Most of his bites are because he’s looking for a mate. He attack the dinosaurs now; I’ll have to video him attacking the T. rex We have another conure and it pretty much stopped biting Important thing is that we potty trained them so if they are on your shoulder and need to poop they will nibble your ear. When they really can’t hold it much longer they will bite really hard so that we take them to the cage
