I always enjoyed taming adult captivity birds more than raising them from birth in your hands. More of a challenge but more rewarding. One good thing to learn in bites is to have good pain tolerance (atleast for small parrots) and to instead of pulling your hand away, push it closer to the bird while he bites or drop it a bit if he is on your hand, it will caught him off guard and release the hand and make him learn that biting is not useful in communicating with you.

I have been mouthed by them when they are babies but this is gentle exploration not aggression. I wont let anyone handle them until I go over their rules and emphasize that ignoring them will result in a bite.

I'm not an expert, but any time a bird chooses you, you can feel very lucky! By the same token, because you are the most important person in his/her life, they can be pretty possessive. It's a good idea to have others start slowly bonding with the bird (watch some other videos on starting to tame) when you are not close by or in another room. It takes time and patience. And don't forget that each bird has its own personality, just like us. Some are more sociable with people, others are more introverted.

I have 4 large Macaws, and biting is part of how they connect with us. Biting can be triggered when they are frightened, when they want to be left alone, when they want to wrestle and play, or simply when they want to preen me. It does take time to realize why your parrot bites, but it is a normal part of aviculture, so there is no reason to try and stop a normal reaction to a variety of emotional or physical triggers. The most important part of caring for any species of parrot, is to simply learn to read their body language, then most bites from 'fear-based triggers' can be reduced significantly.

@MacawAviculture2 жыл бұрын
Macaws are prey animals, so feeling safe is most important to them. She feels scared when you try and get her to step down. If you give her time to feel safe, she will let you know when it is time to expand your trust with her. A Vietnam vet have me his 26 year old Harlequin Macaw shortly before he died of agent orange exposure. For 4 weeks I did not try and touch him, instead simply allowed him to grieve and process such a huge loss. After 4 weeks Carlos stepped up and we have been very close since that time. It is essential to respect their need for safety, and it can be very easy to stop the trust building process if you continue to pressure her to do what you want, just give her time. The video attached took four months of patience and giving Carlos time to adjust to his new home with us. kzbin.info/www/bejne/maqcqmOlp9eXj8k

I have to put her down sometimes though. I can’t walk around with her all day. I make sure not to put her down right before walking out of the room (because if I did that every time then it might make sense) but I can’t have my Catalina Macaw on my arm 24/7. I have two other parrots that deserve one on one time too. Are you thinking that I meant step up? I don’t doubt that we are in the trust building stage, I understand her body language enough to know that. Are you suggesting not holding her for a few weeks and then maybe things will change? I don’t even have a cage for her yet so I’m only asking her to step down onto one of her two playstands.

This is a well presented and useful video! I'm so glad you talk about how forming a bond, watching body language and not forcing behaviour is so important to helping to prevent biting (or generally just having a good relationship with your bird!) As you mentioned also, blowing, putting back in cage etc falls under punishment, which never works as its proven that parrots don't respond to it! Punishment just teaches fear or negativity. One other thing you can try to moderate bite force is target training from a distance. You hold the stick further away so they have to bite gently. Also the same with providing treats after, encouraging gentle grabbing of the treat.

@@FlockFiles This sounds a little insane but I would sit on the couch with my bird and every time she bit me I would make a little screech (like a bird 🤣) to startle her. It's really the same kind of screech my birds make make when one hurts the other during preening. I make sure not to move my hands because I don't want her to associate my hands as dominating or predatory. When she is gentle I make a clicking noise with my tongue and give her a heard stratchy (now she knows that clicking is a good sound and it's an immediate response that doesn't always need to be followed by a pat now). So far it's been a success! 🙌

I remember using winter gloves when my bird was on my finger. Sometimes, she'll bite my fingers while stepping on them to keep herself from losing balance. Other times, she'll just do it for enjoyment. She knows I won't feel anything if she bites me when wearing gloves. I did mess with her as a kid by using one of the gloves for her to bite it when I covered her head with it. Kinda gave her a bad habit of biting back then. I stopped doing it when she got older though and tried to work on the stepping on my fingers without biting the gloves. I was kinda afraid that if I stopped wearing the gloves, she would bite me. So, I kept them on most of the time. Sometimes, I would have her climb on my shoulder. She wouldn't bite me there, but I still was afraid she would bite me while she was alive. We kinda had this sibling relationship with each other back then.

My daughter's conure however is extremely feisty. That bird used to love me but at some point things went south and he will actually hide places like under clothing or the sofa so he can jump out and bite me when I go past. He once flew right at my face and latched on like a face hugger, leaving me with a pierced lip and several bleeding facial wounds. Leave her treats at a distance that she can't bite. Fear and distrust must be overcome before expecting her to want to step up. Coax her every day and try to spend as much time with her as possible. If she comes into your room on her own already that's amazing. Let her on the bed. She will eventually be cuddling in their with you. Lots of luck.

If anyone here is suffering with a biting bird make sure of these steps: 1) Birds always bite for a reason. Find what reason that is by seeing what u do exactly before they bite. If for example they started biting u after u for example grabbed them to get them back into their cage then next time try to lure them in by treats or a phone playing bird sounds near their cage. Be patient! 2) The bird usually doesn’t bite immediately! It will first show u signs like for example backing up or opening their beak to show you that you need to stop! At this point u can either back away or distract them with something for example a treat or toy they like to make them forget that they were even trying to bite u! 3) If you weren’t able to spot signs that show that ur bird is about to bite, and u get bit, make sure to do ONE of these 2 things: 3a) If u have a GOOD bond with ur bird then pull ur hand away gently and do a little scream (not too loud). This is what birds do to other birds when they are for example preening too hard and they want them to stop 3b) If you have a BAD bond with ur bird then DO NOT react! So leave ur hand there and don’t make a sound! 4) Show them that ur hand is something that brings them good so whenever u put ur hand near them and they don’t bite make sure to reward them. BEWARE: DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT give a treat to a bird AFTER they bite or you’re just teaching them that they will get rewarded after they bite which may cause this behavior to be repeated!!! TAKE A SCREENSHOT OF THIS COMMENT, YOU MAY WANNA REFER TO IT! :)

Thank you so much for this video! I don’t have a bird yet, but I’m researching as much as I can to give my future bird a happy, healthy life! This video helped me the most when considering positive reinforcement and understanding biting. I love how you have cloth over food bowls for foraging too! I didn’t think of that before!

I was very happy when I read this. You are going to make a great bird's friend! I really wish more folks would research animals before getting them people dont understand how much work they are or they give up on the animal and hurt it or ditch it then it takes a heck of a person to gain trust again. Good luck hopefully u get a wonderful pet .

@@wreckergirl2939 thank you! It will be a while before I can! Maybe when I’m a college professor later on in life because I’ll be gone 8 hours a day! I know for a fact a bird will not be happy, so when I’m teaching in college (hopefully online and night classes) I can stay at home for most of the day because birds need to be out their cages for that time 🥰 I refuse to be a bird owner who leaves them like that 😒 that’s abuse!!!

My green cheeked conure is a true joy….. only becomes aggressive when suspect I’m going out , if he spots me putting on outdoor shoes/jacket he really flies into a rage and transforms into an aggressive monster. I inherited him from elderly neighbour and she didn’t allow him out of cage (except for a 5 min daily exercise period) He is a a real joy and amazing company!

My bird likes to chew on one of my hoodie then goes into frenzy excited mode and I'm often the collateral damage... I ended up stop wearing that hoodie, cuz there are times I can't even get his attention with his favorite treat when he's like that... Kinda scary for a tiny conure... 😳

Forming a bond is a must...not just to prevent negative behavior..but there is no point to even have a parrot if your not going to bond. Also as she pointed out, birds use thier beaks for many things, thier mouths are prehencile and they use it to grab and climb surfaces...so it's good to point out not every bite is a "bite"...this is especially true if they cannot fly...a larger bird like a macaw may "grab" your arm or hand with thier beak to climb up onto you.

I live in Cebu, Philippines and bird toys are hard to come by here, but I still provide. I started out by letting him play with a plastic floss pic bow and then I gave him a Q-tip to play with. The next thing I did was to start giving him a fresh toilet paper core every day. He has lots of fun with it and even climbs inside to take a nap. Of course he does have a swing, but that only lasts a while before he gets bored. We have a miniature Dachshund and she is too nippy, so I can only let my bird out in my bedroom with the door closed and locked so we can have alone time every day and if he gets impatient, he tries to escape his cage while chirping loudly at me. He is a Love Bird and is only 4 months old now and I really enjoy babying him as much as I can do so safely. Also, I have to use clothes pins to lock his cage openings because he can open them. I am not so much worried that he could get out, but that he is likely to have hem crash down on his little neck once he opens the door and pokes his head through it. He may be fast, but not that fast or strong that he could handle such trauma.

Hi: I am at my wits end with my little Cookie-! I got her a year ago today when she was just two months old! I fell in love with her soon after she came out of her a little egg and flew from Minnesota to Rhode Island to get her! Soon after I came home, I noticed her droppings were drastically different! I called the vet and she said to bring Cookie in! Needless to say she was very upset by that whole thing but she calm down after several weeks and forgave me! About four months ago I came out of my office and hurt her squawking horribly and I turned around and she was hanging by the neck from a toy she unraveled, which I see a lot of bird cages! I quickly put on a rubber glove and try to gently get her with one hand and unhook the toy with the other hand! I got her onto a towel but I had to hold her very tightly to get the scissors near her neck so I could snip this thing off! She probably thought I was trying to cut her head off! She is a very very angry little bird and lets me know every time I get near her with her to feed her a treat or just to put some thing in her cage! She doesn’t like when I have to clean her cage! Etc.! So my question is is our relationship irretrievably broken?? I’ve watched videos but nothing addresses this severe situation!! I’m not a novice and I’ve had lovely parakeets in the past, but I am now 80 years old and I do really want my little Cookie to love me as much as I love her!! Can you please please help? Thank you-!

We found a way to have our greencheeked Boi to not bite as hard, and other than body language, not bite at all, and that was *gently* placing our fingers on wither side of his beak and stopping the bite by gently pushing his head back when he let go, he has realized it is him hurting us and that he can stop on his own. Now, they are nibbles of "pay attention buy I won't hurt you" amazing tips though!

I wish I had realized sooner that she bites as a last resort. She often complains about something I'm doing by squawking while turning her head as though to bite. I used to fearfully pull my hand away. Now I leave my hand there, but let her adjust to being held/touched the way she wants. I don't know at what point she learned that she could trust me that much, and doesn't need to actually bite to change my behavior, but I'm grateful that she's usually gentle, "all bark."

My lovebird likes to get fingertip head and neck rubs. I finally realized that her two ways to communicate that were pushing her forehead against my hand or body, and by biting my fingers gently.

So I just bought two young love birds. The youngest one is my female, sweet as a button. My male, a bit older- blue dutch, HATES HANDS. HATES them. He will step up on those long dowel like perches (we’ve had to resort to those to get him back into his cage etc) no problem. You even walk by with a hand up & he’s darting to the other side of the cage. He’s even got my female freaking out. When they’re separated they act like they’re going to die without each other. But while they’re together, they love so hard, but also nip at each other quite often. So I’ve resulted to separating them at night & letting them play during the day. He will get scared & my female will also take note & run. I haven’t been able to bond with either of them because of his behavior. I got them both at the end of Oct. I got her first, after a week of her seeming so sad to be separated from the other bird in the cage with her (not my male), I went back to the breeder & picked up my blue Dutch. I want so badly to be able to train them & have fun with them BOTH, but he’s made zero progress. The breeder had them locked in cages & rarely let them out, if ever so I know that’s a problem. And when I went to pick them up, he just reached right in & chased them all around the cage to get them out. I was in shock! Like great, that’s going to be a problem. A way LONGER problem than I ever thought possible. We’ve never hurt him ever so I guess I’m just expecting him to have come along more than this? At first he didn’t bite, he’d just run. Now he’s biting whenever we put our hands close to give food, change out toys etc. even if I’m just nicely giving a piece of apple, I move slow.. keep still… she comes in to eat & then he will eat. He bows his head low & makes a clicking noise like he wants to kill me. Like earlier he bit the apple like he thought it was my finger! He’s bit my 4 year old (she has since been told again to keep away until they’re properly trained), but she just wants to help & be around them. And my 12 year old, too. He’s never bit me but that’s only cuz I’m quick, he would have if not. Do you have any advice for me? Or will time be the only hope for him? Should I continue to keep them separated? Omg they will cry for each other SO loudly when they’re apart that’s why I can only do it at night. If he attacks her while together, we separate them right away. Sorry for the whole novel! I don’t usually ask for advice online cuz it’s hard to explain thru words, but I’m at my wits end with this little fella.

I just found your account a couple days ago but I just want to say I love ur channel so much !! I've had my GCC for almost 3 years now, and we have a great relationship, but I want to start doing more training with her to keep her enriched. I've found that a lot of instructional videos don't understand the specificities of green cheek conures (like how they are just so beaky, and you can't just tell them to never use their beaks to climb, explore, etc.), and it also seems that a lot of people don't have quite as personal bonds with their parrots as I do with mine, but I can see that you do have that close bond with yours! love to see it :))) Also this video was super helpful in reminding me that even having a close bond with my bird doesn't mean that she'll never bite, and her biting doesn't automatically mean i'm a terrible owner. Like idk about you, but I tend to compare my bird's and my bond to the bonds that my friends have with their domesticated pets, and how "easily" biting is discouraged in those domesticated animals. But pets like cats and dogs can't really be compared to pet birds, since they're still 100% the same species as in the wild ! As you mentioned in the video, birds use their beaks in a huge number of ways, and while it's good to do what you can to prevent/discourage aggressive behaviors, their instincts will still take over when it comes to defending what they don't want you to touch (like my own computer keyboard lolol), or hormonal season. yayay GCC owners !!

I would like to say that some species tend to bite more than others. Larger species are easier to read than smaller species and are usually less nervous. One species in particular that I have found does not bite at all (which is amazing) is a Patagonian conure. I have one and was able to play with him and put my hand in his cage from day 1. My vet was completely dumbfounded when I brought him to see her because he was scared but she was able to reach in to his travel cage and he stepped right up onto her hand. In all of her years as an avian vet she has never encountered a parrot like him. Apparently they are endangered in the wild because they are easily caught and do not bite their captors. I have had Charlie for years now and he is the best behaved bird I have ever seen. His one drawback is that he is extremely noisy at certain times of the day but will ne quiet if he is allowed to be on someone's shoulder.

I have a male fischer loverbird that is very lovable and cute, i've had him for only 3 days now and we bond very well, i'm a noob trainer but i have taught him not to bite. I opened his cage the second day after i got him and he was nibbling my ears and hair but he hated hands/fingers. the moment you get them close he would bite you very hard. i taught him not to bite by 1st: taking away his food for 5 hours and feeding him by hand 2nd: I put on gloves and kept petting him while holding him, i let him bite me however his wanted, when ever he flies off he wouldn't get far because i cut his wings, i'd pick him up again and slowly release my fingers while petting him, on the 3rd time i picked him up i removed the glove i am using to pet him and after a while of petting and holding (and you see that the bird is not jumping off your hand that you are holding him with), the bird will no longer bite you because i think that they think that its not doing any thing for them, after about 5 minutes of doing this process he never bit me hard again, he only did when i put my hand in his cage because fischer lovebirds are very territorial (remember birds will always bite your hand because they most likely are irritated/scared/ or you invaded their territory (like their cage) and the trick i said here is for making your parrot realize that the hand is not here to harm them and biting does absolutely nothing for them. I am going to try to teach him how to fly to my call now but i first need to figure out what he would consider a treat.
