Thank you for the video. I have a 9 week old GSD. Who I am going to start training. She gets distracted so easily outside with sticks, rocks, and people.

I’ve been training my GSD girl from 7 weeks old (picked her up from the breeder on her 7th week birthday). Here in England a puppy can’t go out and properly socialise until they’re 12 weeks old (because of vaccination needs). I just wanted to say I agree with you about the distractions and training in a real life environment where there are cars, people, other dogs, children, prams, bikes etc etc. From 7 weeks old my GSD girl, in an isolated bit of grass with no distractions, has progressed really well. She’s learned >come >sit >down >wait >heel >walking on a leader to heel >leave >off The second she turned 12 weeks and I started taking her outside that isolated environment she was hopeless! Dragging her bum, zig zagging between my legs, not sitting, pulling, no interest in treats or reward. So I would say to anyone training a GSD that the training you do in isolation is just about them understanding the command and having a grasp of the concept. But the REAL training starts when they’re out in the REAL world.

Picked up my latest GSD yesterday at 9wks. He has a very narural heel, almost a little too close tho. Tried to do some perimeter training over the past couple days, as I've got a number of acrea, and he won't even explore enough to get a correction. Great start on the leash, a little timid to start but immediate response and learning stops and direction changes.

If I did luring like that in the beginning with my puppy I'd pass out from blood loss by the end of it. 😂 my 10 week old german shepherd, Vex, is VERY chompy. All of her other training has been on hold just for the sake of learning bite pressure. The "breeder" sent her home at only 6 weeks old so she has been having to learn everything from us and my 8 year old German Shepherd.

I have an 11 week old female sable working line shepherd please tell me is it normal for her to be latching onto us ripping our clothes, indenting the skin very hard pressure bites. Usually occurs while over stimulated or when shes mad to be leashed or crated. She doesn't want to redirect onto a toy. She kept taking my hand. She has growled on occasion. Idk what to think 😢 otherwise shes been training really well with us. Has a nice place, listens for free, knows other commands.

Mine (same age) did this the other night kind of. He got pissed because I told him no. I think it's their way of testing what they can get away with. Still working on how to tamp it down, although he's only had one outburst so far. I'm no expert but don't give them too much freedom. I'm keeping a leash on in the house so I'm able to control him quickly if I need. If he gets too bitey sometimes I just grab him and hold him off the ground for a sec and tell him to settle. When he stops wriggling I put him down and that usually works.

Hi there, I love your video's and I have a quick question in a previous video you said you don't recommend having the leash around your hand why is that ? thank you for all the great work you do and for sharing it !
@AmericanStandardK93 жыл бұрын
On large dogs I don't recommend wrapping a leash numerous times around your hand same with small dogs. Bad habit. It's usually a clear sign that you have no control over your dog and if that's the case and they lunge hard then you may take a ride on the asphalt with your face God forbid. Furthermore, good leash handling skills require you to quickly slide up and down the leash as needed to modify level of control and correction. If you're triple wrapped around your hand you're stuck like chuck and will be hard to modify grip. K9 handlers are also taught to never wrap because they may need to release dog on a moments notice. Lastly, wrapping usually puts a lot of tension on the line which breeds pulling and anxiety and general bad leash manners. Having said all that I sometimes wrap the leash for extra grip for specific purposes when working hard dogs cause I have soft little girly hands lol. 😉 But even then it's one purposeful wrap for the moment for the grip while I'm working an untrained dog or during training with a protection dog who is being encouraged to dig and pull for a bite with duration and I need the extra grip. But for regular walking with a well behaved dog no wraps unless it's a chicken caeser wrap you're eating on the walk. Thanks for watching a great question

@@AmericanStandardK9 thanks for the info and you are right my almost 1.5 year old workingline gsd had no proper leash manners and it is verry hard for me to handle him he has even launched at me many times because he wants to play with the other dog he sees so badly, he is verry high energized but as he is not my dog i dont have the saying in how he gets handled. my staffy 6.5 year old is verry sweet and i can let the leash rest in my hand the whole walk if i want to but she is insecure with other dogs (and she tries to dominate other dogs to feel more secure and i dont know how to handle this) this is why she is still living with my parents she has a good life but they can not give her the structure i want her to have so i struggle verry hard with this. i would love both dogs be part of my daily life and due to the issue of these feelings i get verry demotivated towards the gsd who has no fault in all of this and i feel alone in this eventough my partner does know how important this is for me and what he could do to make things better the gsd asks much of our energy and we are not getting anywhere sorry for the rant but i feel so alone with this problems

Hi there love your videos, they've been helpful with our adopted german shepherd/ lab mix. I just had a question. Our dog almost never barks, no matter what and he's pretty friendly with strangers/ Do we have any hope training him to bark as a "watch dog" or is he just too soft? lol We also have been trying to stop the leash pulling with a slip lead but not seeing much... Would you say the prong collar is best way to teach him, if so should it be a temporary thing or long term?

Prong yes. Usually a dog that doesn't bark is confident. Dogs that are stressed bark. If you know how to make him bark you can convert whatever is making him bark to put it on cue when someone knocks or rings door bell. Easier said than done but can be done

I have a question. I know you mainly would use an e-collar for off leash training. But my mom thinks they are cruel and won’t allow me to buy one along with other “cruel” tools such as the choke chain and prong. So would I just continue with the lures and maybe space out the length of treats more? As my dog gets older?
@AmericanStandardK93 жыл бұрын
No. Put a prong collar on your mom! Joking but at the same time serious. Let her know it's no big deal. It looks scary but is no big deal at all feeling. Same with ecollar. Sounds scary "shock collar" but should be called tickle collar and people wouldn't get their feelings hurt. Have her watch a couple of my videos. When all else fails move out!

@@AmericanStandardK9 You really got me in that first bit. Anyway that makes sense! I will try and see what she says!
@AmericanStandardK93 жыл бұрын
You can always buy a thin slip lead. Slip leads are positive trainers best friend. More aversive than the prong usually to be honest. You can get a lot of leash pressure knocked out using it. Positive trainer approved.
