First time GSD owner, East German working line high drive dog. My first dog EVER-I’m 65 yo- I never let her get away with anything and used a balanced approach to training- she is perfect in every way. Socialize, socialize, socialize . Loves everyone but still has that natural gsd protection ‘built in. Best thing I ever did for myself. Is it a lot of work? Yes! But it’s what I wanted to do- we train every day. when i was a kid, i found a street dog and begged my parents to let me keep him. the only problem was he was very dominant, so i had to do the same thing you're doing with this GSD as a 10 year old little girl 😂 it worked, though, and my dog is now 12 years old and extremely well behaved.

I've used the pinning method with every dog I've owned. From English Bulldogs to Rottweilers. I promise you my Corso took the longest to realize I meant business. The smartest, most stubborn, wonderful dogs ever. If you're not willing to use this method... Please stick to chihuahuas or poodles.

I used this method with my first russian working line caucasian shepherd,because he was on to kill everybody. I put a very thick textile bag on his head,and hold him down for at least one hour. I was a god to him from then on. I don t know why so many people condemn this method,saying this is brutality.

Chihuahua should get pinned more often, size doesnt say anything. So many chihuahua out of hand, well mostly because of the owners like usual. I like bigger dogs, got an malinois myself.

I got lucky that my corso is a big baby and really submissive. He was a nightmare to train in his adolescent years, plus I was only 14-15 and his primary (and mostly only) source of training. I can’t imagine taking on my brick house of a dog AND him constantly testing anyone for dominance.

I started my Rottie pups learning handling like at the vets the day they came home. My vets could do just about anything such as blood draws, IV’s admin meds, clean ears, change dressings, remove staples with out issues. My Rotties thought going to the vets was a party🤣

Hi Erica, welcome to the world of the working lines. After 27 years, I adopted my first DDR GSD [I adopt the unadoptable senior GSDs - working line - to keep them from being put down]. Most amazing dog I've ever owned - my current DDR. Yes, has very high prey drive, but is very well trained. I recondition them as tracking dogs / companions. I recommend tracking [check out "The Tracking Dog" by Glenn Johnson]. May I suggest you reach out to your local Schutzhund club and inquire about Schutzhund training. Also of note, the body structure of the DDR is much stronger. Make sure he's comfortable being handled. The DDRs weren't bred to grab / hold, they hunt / bite. Be careful, grown males can crush bones. Good luck, it's a lot of work, but extremely rewarding!

Good for you! The positive method is NOT enough for these dogs. They are WAY different than American shows. We have had both, and currently have one of each, and it works because Sadie,the American has a retiring personality anyway, but Lucy, the German worker, is constantly trying to manage everybody, and it takes a lot of energy to keep her in her place! We love her to bits though, it's just good we know not to let her get away with her shenanigans. Actually, she's a hoot!

@@lightyear3429 Absolutely true. On the flip side, they tend to be heavier boned, and more solidly built. Their faces are also more serious looking, American shows have a softer more open faced look. But I'll tell you, I'd hate to be on the bad end of an encounter with a real, intensely prey-driven, super energetic German. Way more intimidating!

I currently have a show line female (spayed) and a working line male (unaltered). My male I have had since a puppy and man they try to test you almost daily until around 18-24 months old. He is super smart and loveable but boy I had to pin him when he was younger. My female came in to the house later from a family friend who passed away. His dog needed a home so I brought her in. It's amazing seeing the difference in the lines of GSD when you have it firsthand daily.

The pinch collar is truly a necessity. Gentle training only works until about 6 months. Then you need gentle correction and the prong or e collar is perfect. The practice of putting your dog on spot and forcing him to give you access to his entire body is key.

The pinning method definitely works… my GSD learned real quick… I don’t get tired… he definitely didn’t wasn’t feeling it but he learned in the end, yea mama mean business so I have to listen. He’s a good boy now. So if you’re not comfortable taking control or things makes you uncomfortable… get an ankle biter or something. GSD takes a little work.

I have rescued this year an 8yr working line GSD. What a fun year I've had. Definitely found that discipline beats rewards in terms of training and this video is super accurate. Luckily she's quite well house trained and calm, and well behaved with strangers (after the initial alert that someone is on the drive) but I have to be on top of her to correct negative actions and things I don't want. I've certainly learnt how to growl commands. On the other hand people are amazed how quickly she's learned key concepts and commands, and how well it works!

Love your channel. We had to do this with our 6 month Shepherd. She was so dominant, not like the others and really needed us to show her we weren’t having it anymore. At first we blamed it on teething, but it was more than that. She was biting us and was out of control. So glad to find this video to affirm we did the right thing. E collars are a great teaching tool. In addition we got her proper training. GSD’s are amazing animals and family members! Your videos have such great information! We love your style! Great video! You said the truth, and let's be real... a strong, dominant GSD in 2021 means more work and headaches than fun, especially a full working line dog. I love the breed, and I think this dogs are the bests dogs by the deffinition of DOG, not pet or some kind of puppet... Their instincts are stronger, they bond harder with their family and especially the owner, and their whole potential is higher but you MUST guide it. I've had 3 GSD though my life, right now a 5 year DDR male wich is a great dog, but if I had videos like this a while ago some things would have been easier, especially because most dog trainers don't know what they are dealing with, so the owner has to do all the work with this dogs, regardles how much they pay for "training".

i had the same dog. everything this guy said is true. best dog in the world. hair impossible. smartest there is. 1 thing he left out. we picked a female that was not the pack leader. as a pup she got beat up by her litter mates. she was much more submissive and friendly right from the beginning. So when picking a puppy try and not choose 1 of the pack leader pups unless your a cop.

Greetings from Romania! You are the first professional trainer that i saw providing this information,risking offending people! Twenty years ago there was a Caucasian Shepherd boom across Europe. I was amazed how many people bought them. Every month on the news there was a story with people killed by caucasian shepherds. Two weeks ago a caucasian shepherd escaped his cage and killed a child who entered the yard who s fence was on renovation. I mean ,how stupid one person can be to think these breeds are fluffy Teddy bears? These breeds are semi wild animals,finally ,here in my country,caucasian shepherds are bought by competent people. But now we have a Malinois frenzy,history repeating itself... I am 6 foot 6,300 pounds and a pretty strong guy,and i am very afraid of what a dominant working breed can do to me,but especially a caucasian shepherd. I wish good health to you and your family!

I’ve had & worked many many working dogs over the years mainly Rottweilers, Shepherds, & Mals. & they were great! I’m 51 & was not looking for another high fight drive dog, so we bought a Chocolate Labrador. He’s a Field Trial Ch offspring & I’ve had to do this same thing with him. I was shocked that this Lab is more driven & headstrong then any Rottweiler I’ve owned. Working Dog is the words to pay attention to, they come in many different breeds. Good video!! I’m glad you’re keeping it real as opposed to the videos I see on here where it’s all lovey dovey, sometimes you need to establish pack leadership & it’s not pretty sometimes

As someone who went from showline to working line GSDs: The DDR German Shepherd is a bloodline that was established during the Cold War era. The new bloodline would be able to withstand frigid winter temperatures and excel in military and police work. They are larger, stronger and have extremely high prey drive. I recommend talking to your local Schutzhund club members. They are very knowledgeable and can help you if you have questions / concerns.

I have a female gsd. She just turned 1 year old. I insisted on socializing her as soon as we got her. She does sit, lay down, still working on stay. She loves children. I'm 61 and I use firm commands. I am disabled, but She responds well. Although I am behind on training due to my copd. Great dog. I know I need lease traing, but walking in the smoke from the wild fires not good for her or me. I enjoy your videos for ideas, and alternatives. Thank you!

I know I’m late to the comments but I just discovered this channel. I have a working line GDS. he just turned 7 on the 28th. Only time he fought me was during bath time. He’s pretty laid back but I never allowed him to get the better of us. I grew up with them too. I love him so much and socialized him with people. I admit I got seriously lucky with him. Even the vet said I got lucky. I know he would hurt someone over us. So I’m aware of what he’s potentially capable of.. I taught my kids how to handle him. It was done with letting him know he doesn’t rule us, but without hurting him. I wouldn’t trade him for the world.

@@lojibaybee One or two times when he is trying to protect the food, but dealt with force swiftly and firmly. When a GSD is growling at you he is testing where your bottom line might be. You don't do anything you allow growling to become a daily norm. Let's just say a GSD especially an DDR is a behavioral programmable machine. You have to program the dog with correct behaviors spot on and time on.

This is a pretty incredible turn around. I just recently found your videos and have been using them to learn as much as i can. My Wife and I are getting a GSD soon, i want to say he/she is more of an American Showline, but i think that the bloodline has some East German Working line, and Czech working line as well. I have a question that i havent been able to find online and was wondering if you wouldnt mind answering them? 1. Can this type of obedience training be done by two different individuals? I want my Wife to have the same type of control over the Dog as I do, and Im a Firefighter, and work 48 hour shifts. So i wont be there to train or exercise the dog every single day, so my Wife would be stepping in as well. I dont want this to cause any confusion with the dog, however.

I've acquired almost all of my dogs as 8 weeks old, and training started on day one. They learned very quickly that mouthing (not even biting) for any reason was a cardinal sin. It took months of work and consistent training and socialization, but I now have 4 excellent dogs.

Genuine question: What's the difference between mouthing and biting? And how do you teach a puppy how to use a "soft mouth" while playing? Cause after all playful a love bites can be accepted as it's their way to play and show affection, but not aggressive ones, so how do we teach them the difference?

@@apersonwhocantmoveitmoveit7688 GSD's are very good at bite modulation. Excellent in fact. When the puppy bites too hard, make it known by howling and giving their neck a little pinch. Allow them to suck on a finger (NOT bite) like a pacifier (some may not agree with this--but works for mine--including a 5 month old going through that stage now). When dogs play with each other, they also modulate their bites, which is why you don't see blood at the dog park. But, dogs do play-bite each other harder than what is comfortable for humans, so they much be clear on this distinction. Generally, start with a position of "no bite" and ease up as over time they get the idea of mouthing softly.

One of my dogs 3 prior owners and me. She was hopeless until I grabbed hold of her, threw her onto her futon, fake furs and cushions and told her I'm the boss here. There was literally a sigh of relief from the dog and a total change of gear (Like, "You love me enough to set boundaries and limits? I can respect that"). This was a dog even people with Doberman would back off from, and she could empty a dog park, walking her on a leash people would avoid her. When did her training begin? As soon as I got her.

I hate when people buy a beautiful and expensive dog then feed them $*** like Pedigree, etc. 2) I try to keep my dogs off pavement and concrete sidewalks when possible during hot days. I know you only had yours on for a short time but for those who say a dog's paw doesn't feel the heat what say you? I see too many people here in FL walking their dogs in the hot weather on such surfaces. Thank you.

I have never had a GSD. They are beautiful dogs. I love dog training I have had two rottis that I love to train and have as a.family dog. They are very quick to learn and very protective of family. I start training as soon as they are in there new home. I believe that is the key to having a great start with training. I have been watch your training methods and really like your methods of training.Thank you for your teaching and your years of service as a k9 handler. I look forward to learn more from you.

As someone who has lived the story this man is conveying, I can only give one bit of advice. Besides all the real world truth and honesty in this video, before you bring a WLGSD home, ask yourself a couple questions. First, "Am I willing to have my life revolve around this animal"? Second, "Am I willing to make a life long commitment to this animal"? In other words, commit to spending the time to understand the line and working to keep up with the training for life. To me, my opinion, if you answer no to either question, please look to another line of GSD. WL shepherds are probably not a good idea if you say no to either question. My wife and I got through ours with the help of the right trainer. Cruz was one of the best shepherds I've had. He was my 5th. He was also my first WL. It was total hell the first three years. But with the proper training, we got some very good years with him before we had to put him down this summer. He has left a huge hole in our lives because we fully committed to him and did it for life. It's a little different between a pet line and WL commitment. So keep that in mind. But I miss the hours spent on the football field working with him. the hiking, the tugging etc. RIP big guy. We miss ya.

@@AmericanStandardK9 Thanks for the reply. It's never easy. We are currently starting to do some research on the line and trying possibly to decide on a reputable breeder for the DDR Shepherds. We're not going to rush it though. I can honestly admit, Cruz has taught my wife and I a lot more than we bargained for. Even with the bad, it was all worth it. But we are not totally set to the DDR line. We are entering with an open mind and a little more education this time. Thanks again for the great video. It is the best example of the reality of dealing with a WL shepherd. I'm not a totally trusting person, but I find trust in truth. You deal in truth, good bad or indifferent. So I'll be checking out more videos. Thanks for taking your time in making them. You truly give a good service to the line by offering your knowledge.

I have two working line East German and Czech males that are such great dogs, and coming from field bred lab gun dogs, I have to say that it prepared me pretty well, but these dogs are definitely more intense. Very important to work with your breeder to get what you want and to match what its going to be used for with the exact parents and pup. One of mine is higher drive and excellent at tracking, the other I told the breeder calm, calm, calm, and that's what I got. Totally different dogs and maybe will try to certify the other as a therapy dog. Definitely need firm guidance, exercise, and stimulation.

I've had a few German shepherds over the years and now I have a 14 week old German Shepherd puppy from someone who has mom and dad however I couldn't tell you if she's east , west German line or what. Supposedly dad was retired police dog. I started training her myself with the basics and tomorrow morning we start getting serious on training her to be a service dog. I'm no pro but I have videos like yours to help. Thanks.

I have a Czech working bloodline female as a puppy. She is a really tough dog and requires a firm but fair hand (and lots of love). I can only imagine what kind of disaster she would have been with a permissive or submissive owner. She is 1.5 years now and great with the family and safe with strangers.

Love these dogs. I dreamed of having one since I was a young child and came across the old Rin Tin Tin reruns on TV. I am on number 5 German shepherd. When we bought our first one I looked at his mother and father and knew the dog was a weapon and needed to be under human control. When you set who is boss and train these dogs they are the best best best ever dogs in the world. They love our family more than we love them. I bless the people who bred this dog to what it is today.

I recently rescued a one year old female shepherd from the shelter. She was very sweet and energetic, and seems to like everybody. However, the first thing she did when I got her home was to attack my seven year old German shepherd male. She had him on the floor and dragged him across the room and wouldn’t stop. She is about 50 pounds and he’s 84 pounds. I kept her in a cage to keep her away from him when she was in the house but she basically ate her way out of the cage. I did take her to a professional trainer who did well with her on obedience, but I’m still dealing with the behavioral fall out. She is extremely reactive to other dogs and I had no idea what a working German Shepherd was until the trainer told me that that’s what he thought she was. It has been quite a learning experience and I am watching a lot of videos to figure out how to deal with this behavioral issue. She is my third German Shepherd, but is nothing like the first two. i’m going to work on it, but this is way more than I bargained for and I’m guessing that the first owner had no idea what he was getting into either. all I can say is that I agree that this dog is not for everyone and if I had known what I was in for, I would not have gotten her in the first place. But I refuse to take her back to the shelter. That’s not fair either.

My dog is not quite two years but he needs intervention if he’s gonna be saved. I’m perfectly willing to do what’s necessary, but the learning curve on how it’s taking a little bit longer. I’ve got a really dominant headstrong one on my hand but I know if we can get him the right training and if I can learn how to handle him appropriately he’s going to be amazing.

I have a 4 yr old GSD. And I’m 2 days we will pick up his brother. (Same breeder working line GSD but different parents). We live on 23 acres and Thor has his own room in the shop/ barn/ garage whatever you want to call it. Literally he has a bedroom with a window, HVAC and a custom dog door to come and go. He has a bed, blankets, toys etc. he is like a kid but can’t live inside bc my oldest is allergic. We spent the first year working, working and working. But it was so worth it. We thought long and hard if we were ready to do it again and we are excited. And sometimes we still have to lock the gate so he can o my run in the small fenced part of our yard bc people are afraid of him no matter what we say. But he is awesome now. One thing he use to love doing was when packages would come he would get them off the porch and destroy what was in them. We used that to our advantage and now he gets the mail for us. (Some boxes are too big but the ones he can get.) But definitely it for everyone. Had friends with a Doberman and he was well trained and still had an accidental and bit her sister bc she spooked him and after 24 hours and tears and not knowing what to do they put him down. They were devastated but didn’t feel like they could take the chance and he was trained and the sister that was bit was okay and didn’t want him put down. So people do have to be prepared and be willing to work.

Totally agree with everything you said. Guardian Angel Shepherds breed working line German Shepherds for families but they will only sell to pre-approved owners and will pick the puppy for the owner. The owner and puppy must be a good match!

You are absolutely right about a good GSD being able to read your mind! Mine do it all of the time. They even can learn how to spell words! They are KEEAWSOME ANIMALS! My 4 mo. old is learning fast! Gameness is what these dogs,are all about! They are,too willing to work!

It doesn't matter which breed of dog you get, they can all become dominant if you don't teach them discipline and who is in charge early on. My lab x border collie is nearly 11 months old now and does as she's told most of the time. She can be a pain at times as she's in the teenage phase, but I have also been using a crate from early on as she still likes to chew, but only when I'm not at home.

Of course you can get dominant behavior from other breeds. However, working dogs tend to have the occurrences much more often because they are bred to have those characteristics. Most supposed dominant issues is just a dog with no boundaries. True dominance isn't as common as most think

I LOVE my GSD! She has some working line in her. Positive only DID NOT work, but a mix of negative and positive did. The prong collar and e-collar work great with her. I rarely have to use any shock now; it's strictly vibration (Dogtra brand collar). She wasn't completely stupid when i got her, but she did have her moments, and i had to put her on her side. Otherwise, they're such amazing, smart animals that are well worth the work.

For this BS that you see here in this video this was pretty much the extent of this particular issue and we actually had no more silliness whatsoever after this. This was the last little bit of ironing out. Everything after this was smooth. But what we had to do in the days leading up to this was a different story altogether. He wouldn't even let me touch him, near him or even think about going into a down etc. We had to have a few conversations in the first few days when he tried to get stupid. This was just so I could get near him without him trying to bite me or muscle up to me etc. I don't remember the exact details of what stupidity he was trying but I also never let him play out his plan more than a second or two before he realized it was a very bad idea. By the time we get to this video, I had got him to let me touch him obviously, put him on his side, but when I laid on him with my chest very gently it was too dominant of a position for him and that's when he tried to buck the system. We were all good until I laid on him but these was the point was to continue to progress. We had been successfully building up to this point. Laying on him ever so slightly with my chest is what started this rodeo. I knew it was coming that's why we filmed it. The owner couldn't even brush him for the last 6 months because he would act stupid. The owner was afraid of him and afraid of getting bit. He was night and day difference when we brought him home. Do you have a video on how to teach your working GSD puppy 10 weeks old not to bite. I have been able to do a few basic training things but now she thinks I’m one of her siblings or a toy and wants to play bite. When I tell her no or just ignore the behavior she barks at me and bites anyway.

@@christinaflores9922 Hey, 10 week old, working line GSD... They will bite.. that's what they do. Have no expectations that the biting will stop anytime soon. This is who they are. You can redirect to toys, tugs or whatever, but they will still try to engage you with their mouths to some degree. No way around it and nothing to be worried about. Especially with little puppies, their teet are like needles, so be prepared :)

Had working male GS’s my entire life and 2/3 had to be “broken in” heavily. Might sound or look harsh but you need to have dominance and control over these dogs for the safety of you, others and the dog itself. Incredible intelligence and can read your emotions, excellent with children if trained properly. Get a genuine leather leash and a stainless choke and prong collar. E-collar if they’re a real stud might be 100% necessary. They are SO intelligent that working with an e-collar they learn immediately.

Don't know why I'm watching your video. I lost my GSD/Akita in August of this year. She was the greatest companion I could ever ask for. Got her from a shelter eleven years ago when she was a year old. She didn't know even the basics, would jump on me and my mom and it was obvious when I got her home she was badly abused and neglected. So the training began. But. Because of the abuse when correcting her she would freak out and cower. Which became counterproductive. So I had to modify my approach when correcting her. So I lower my voice and use a more firm tone then what I had been using. Patience and persistence won the day. Then after a period of time the butt-head tried manipulating me by feigning cowering and stressing when I corrected her. When she started with this behavior that's when I began to come down heavy on her and she eventually figured out that tactic just made it worse for her. Then came the day she challenged me. I could see it coming. I forgot what she did but the moment she challenged me she found herself pinned on the ground. We went at it for about forty-five to fifty minutes with my chest on her and guess who won that battle. Me. After that she was the most respectful, LOYAL and easiest dog to train. In the eleven years I had her in that time we may have been apart maybe ten days. She was by my side 24/7/365, With physical and health challenges I have she was more of a therapy dog for me. And she was so loyal I have no doubt she would lay down her life for me or my mom. It's been a little over two months since I lost my best friend and it's been difficult not having her by my side. And that's all I have to say about my Ruby.
