It is a great deservice to students to not train them with a makiwara. Two things every good school must have are, wood floors, and the makiwara. Beyond that all thats neccesary are student, teacher, and Gi. Thank you for sharing with us. Laoshr #60 Ching Yi Kung Fu Association

Bullying your own body doesn't make you stronger. Bullying yourself and hardening yourself are two different things, yes. Many toxic parents who think that by bullying or mistreating their children they are making them "stronger" should learn that.

Okinawan Karate; cane from China when Chinese sent criminals to the dragonfly island known as Wa. The Ainu studied Naha-te. The Chinese outcasts were fighting and learning from then. So much Naha-te is gone because of Samurai and Edo policemen. We are not all Famers, street fighting is horrible avoid at all cost. My Tsuraoka great Sensei taught perseverance. But there must be some Okinawan people who died with more Waza ; then we know of. Because of running into the wilderness; not unlike many Shinobi/Ninja, and perhaps yamabushi. Train deligently. I am half disabled but instill do kihon Waza from Aikido, Tsuraoka, Goju, and many other basics is they way. PEACE. Domo arrigatou gozaimas. Karate saved my life.

That Is not accurate. Most karate schools trace their lineage through Matsumura Sokon who was a menkyo kaiden in Jigen ryu and mixed them with the kung fu he learned and over time more Japanese budo diffused in. Also French martial arts made their way into the mix due to the French Legation training the Japanese armed forces, especially the Navy in the late 1800's.

We concentrate on gaining power towards eliminating it for technique...... just remember that! Fighters limit themselves in training so never become good martial artist and good martial artists take a long time to be effective as fighters!

@@santiagomorales9129 na esai kala Santiagos (wishing you well)! when I was a teenager I used to break wood with my knife-hand (shuto) given the limited years in training my body had not developed and so I had to use speed for minimal contact time, like you woukd stick a pencil into something. but still I had to strengthen the muscle to cushion the bone on impact... conditioning of the body has a place at different times in our training which requires less speed so as to expand the contact time! We develope the body, mind and emotions to accomodate speed and coordination with less and less power... seeking that minimal contact time with our strikes. We test our techniques later on with breaking things..... wish you great success in your martial arts, its not easy!

...hello; to be a fighter you need cardio vascular train; a lot (there is no point if you are good in couple of techiques but cannot hold 3 minutes of strong movements hitting and receiving etc); then a mind and body that do not mind to receive the firsts strikes (something totally different than self defense...) a big body better; train explosive force and the aggro spirit. You do not need right technique as you see in most fighters.

I studied under Shugoro Nakazato in the 70's. If a green belt tried to kick me in the head like that girl tried at the beginning of the video, she'd have been on her butt in a flash. But then again, she's a green belt and still "green" enough to try silly stuff like that. :-)

If a civilian most times, using martial arts is forced to defend. They go to jail. A soldier, or police officer hardly does not. We should become like those Okinawan farmers again. Domo arrigatou gozaimas!!!. Shihan. 👹

I worry about the spirit of karate. 8 year olds with ni-dan. It was supposed to protect us from mean Samurai , and corrupt police. Now we train Samurai (soldiers), and policemen. It's only a sport now for civilians, and a means to kill for Samurai and police. Okinawan karate should not be taught to military or police. But now the world is ending. I've had a 38 year journey of kihon Waza. Sukoshi Kata. I've not mastered any style. Remember the roots of karate!!!. Tai Chi gung fu is my main focus. But I won't train in dojo with olicemen oppression, I'd train military though. Ahhh the life of a Baka budoka, and Taoist Reverend.

The punches the guy does at the very beginning of the video look so slow and stiff - this is very symptomatic of traditional karate and why it is not very effective for real self defense.

@Owl Longbow You seem to be so deeply indoctrinated into traditional karate that there is no more objectivity for you to discern any critical thinking about the effectiveness and practicality of traditional karate when it comes to real self defense. I am sure it is better than knowing nothing...but it is amazing how quickly the effectiveness of karate has diminished with the rise of mma.

@Owl Longbow I say what I say as a long time student of traditional Okinawan karate. I was disillusioned when I found out just how badly it prepared students for the real world. I am not "up to anything" other than really asking student who study traditional karate to be honest about their training and what it is capable of doing in real life.
