It's actually really refreshing to see you teach a completely new concept on camera, rather than showing the stages of the dog leaning a trick who already knows the advanced ending. It shows the level of patience required and the additional steps needed to get there. Great video :)

Exactly. It's all about "Manipulating" your dog to do what you want at the same time you say the Word or the "command". Dogs are experts at associating things so they will realise the pattern pretty Quick. And ofcourse to get your dog more eager or willing to learn and/or work, positive reinforcement is key. being very happy and over exaggerate your happyness.

Aww Zak thank you for all your wonderful work, you helped me feel confident about training my puppy Isla, she's nearly 2 now and we also adopted a greyhound, Ash, earlier this year. Isla my whippet is still pretty cheeky but thanks to your videos she was fab with potty training and has never had any problems with separation anxiety, and she is awesome at tricks. I still have lots of work to do with her as she gets way over excited about meeting people and dogs, but I have your lovely videos and your fab book to help me. Just wanted to send my thanks and my love from the UK, you're awesome and positive training truly is the only way forward, thank you for all you do :) xxx

My dog is afraid of walking through a hoop..... So I'm not sure how I'm going to get her to jump through a hoop! My dog thinks of a hoop as a frisbee. But she for some reason thinks that she can't walk through it..... she's a Border Collie. She should be good at this! 😂😂😂 Edit: Nevermind! I kept trying and she did it! If your dog has the same problem as mine did, don't give up! He/she will eventually get there. I almost gave up on it, and I'm so glad I didn't. Don't give up! 😁😃😉😃

Hey Zak (and everyone else). I have a 5 month Great Dane who I have taught to walk on leash, on my right side, at my pace. I love training dogs and she took to it very well! However, recently (not sure if I’ve changed something unknowingly or if it’s the new cool weather and snow distracting her) but she is all the sudden not doing well. She was to the training level before where she would walk next to me properly and I would intermittently give a treat reward - specially if we passed by someone or if she was tempted in anyway. In other words, she was very far along in her over all walk training and could even do all this off leash (as I sometimes would let her in fenced areas) Pretty much, she knew to walk on my right, at my pace, and sit at stop lights all WITHOUT my needing to tell her to. BUT NOW, she does not walk next to me unless I am currently giving her the treat or command. Then once she has been rewarded (when I give her the treat) she walks ahead or goes left and right to smell and see things - something that before I had trained out of her. She still sits at stop lights and listens when I give commands, but she has lost the ability to walk nicely next to me without me constantly asking and rewarding her. We have a command word for when she needs to come tighter to my right leg (which she was also very good with before) and now I’m having to use that word just to get her to come to my right side at all. And as soon as I reward for for walking property, she leaves (either to walk ahead, or smell something somewhere else) I want to get her back to where so was in her training. I’ve trained a few dogs in my life have never seen such a 360 change made this late in trading. She had made such amazing progress for such a young age and I put a lot of time and energy into training her to not only to walk without pulling, but also on my right side, at my pace and sitting whenever I stop moving - almost all of which she has lost. I’ve tried correcting all these things by stepping her training way back and pretty much starting as if she knew nothing. Starting over has been very difficult and frustrating for me and I think her as well. We are from Canada and now have snow so I’m assuming that is what’s got her so distracted on walks but regardless of the reasoning I need some advice on how to get her back on track. She is now and quite large and strong animal and she needs this proper teaching. And stepping back in her training just isn’t working for her. My theory for this is that she does know what she’s doing, it’s just that now she only wants to do it if she is constantly being rewarded. I think me taking a step back in her training has frustrated her because she’s a very smart dog. She knows the commands and is willing to do them, however as soon as I reward her she goes back to her bad behavior. So since we’ve stepped back, she’s frustrated and bored dring training because she already knows everything and it’s not stimulating enough for her. Zak, do you (or anyone else) have any advice on how to get her listening constantly again. Right now her disobedience is annoying yes, but she is a very large dog who’s just going to get bigger and I worry that soon she will start pulling. I got and trained her at a very young age and obedience while walking is all that she’s ever known. I guess her main issue here is focus, but I don’t know how to keep her focused without just constantly giving commands and rewarding (and doing that isn’t working) Is there a way to get her back to the way she had without taking those steps backwards I’m training that frustrate us both?
@Bellencer
@Bellencer 6 жыл бұрын
My thoughts are that it could be weather related, but as she's 5 months it's very likely an age issue, as around 6 months or so most dogs seem to regress in their training. I would try a variety of tactics here. Firstly, don't feed her before a walk/training session so that she's hungry and is much more focused on getting the rewards. You can make her work for her meals or use a high value treat sparingly. Secondly, you need to give her another reason to focus. My favourite method for teaching a LLW/heel with any dog is the 180 method. You walk in one direction and the second the dog begins to pull or get out in front of you you do a 180 turn and walk the opposite direction. Initially you're not going to get much further than 5ft from your front door whilst she is learning, but within one or two walks she will begin to understand that she must be beside you in order to get anywhere on her walk. You should incorporate your rewards/current method when she's walking nicely beside you as an extra incentive, and then when she's not walking nicely you do a 180. I also recommend to either stop walking or do a 180 at random intervals even if she is walking nicely in order to improve focus; a dog cannot successfully stop or do a total 180 turn unless they are paying close attention to you. Thirdly, and this a trick I only picked up a few months ago but it works exceptionally well, is to spend the majority of the walk as normal in a LLW or heel, and then every 15-30 minutes or so you just stop and engage in play for a couple of minutes. I've found that this greatly improves focus and the bond between a handler and their dog. If you're concerned about her strength particularly around distractions then I'd recommend you use a training tool of your choice, a properly conditioned head halter or front clip harness probably being the best options due to her age and size.

Madison Bell, Congrats! It sounds like you're putting a lot of care and effort into training your pup, which, as someone who worked as a dog trainer for several years, is really encouraging to see! I think what you have on your hands is a pup just coming into adolescence. For some dogs, this stage in their development goes practically unnoticed, but for others it practically turns them into a different animal altogether. Sounds like yours leans a little to the latter. First, try to remember that this is a phase and it will definitely end. Usually giant breeds stay in it until they're about 2, on average. Second, think about what's happening in your dog's brain at the moment (just to help you maintain your own patience): 1) HORMONES. Lots of them. They're very distracting, and it'll only get worse as they climb between now and the 1 year mark, after which they'll start receding to adult levels. And 2) Developing senses. Because the brain is maturing, your girl is quite literally noticing things she never noticed before. And not only that, but these things she's noticing are more interesting to her than you are, because they're new and you're not. ;) So what can you do? A few things to try: • Rather than focus on the walking, focus on the focusing. Teach her to make eye contact for longer periods, through gradually greater distractions. • Use sniffing as a reward during walks. Maybe at first you reward for every 10 steps of good walking (or even less if that's what she needs!) Then gradually build it up to every block, every 2 blocks, etc. • The abovementioned 180 method is a great one. • Rather than not letting her get distracted at all, teach her how to come away from distractions promptly. I.e., whenever she stops to sniff something, count to 3 and then call her away and reward furiously as soon as she comes. • Like human adolescents, doggy adolescents are moody. Pick a time when she seems to be in a good listening mood for attempting walks. Otherwise, stick to other types of training if walking just doesn't seem in the cards. • Finally, try making walking more challenging by teaching her more difficult skills. Can she walk backwards in a heel? Can she switch sides? Take a look at some rally obedience for inspiration. There are a lot of cool ways to challenge her. I've seen all of these methods work, although not every one for every dog, of course. Hopefully one of them works for you! Keep at it. You're doing great. Good luck!

@Bellencer
@Bellencer 6 жыл бұрын
Enforce rules when you play with your dog, they can play fetch/tug with you but it must be on your terms. So, the minute they begin to get too excited you want to end the game. If they're well trained you could make them do a down stay or other obedience cues to bring down that energy level, but otherwise just drop the toy and walk away. Feel free to begin playing with them again once they've calmed down a bit. They will soon associate that playing too rough ends the game!

Hey Zak, so i have a 6 month old half great dane half pit bull puppy. I am still having trouble with her potty training. She sleeps in a dog crate and every morning without fail she uses her crate. I can wake up and it will be dry but if i walk even 2 feet away she uses her crate. If she sees another dog or i pet another dog she will use her crate. I can walk her and she can empty herself and a few minutes later she will get jealous or angry and use her crate. I have to bathe her and clean her crate nearly every day because of this. How can i fix it? Also, she had a separation thing with me. If I leave her outside for a little bit or shes out and I walk away from her she has a complete come apart no matter who is with her. And lastly, I cannot get her to stop chugging her water. She gets plenty every day but without fail she chugs every bit if water she sees and constantly acts like shes dehydrated. She pees and poops regularly and both look healthy so I know she cant be dehydrated. Please help!

My dog jumped through on his second try, but now every time he jumps through it now... he expects a treat! And sometimes he misses the hoop! 😂

Hi zak ive been having a problem with my 7 month old puppy and we are trying to trust him in the front yard, that has no fence. It's kind of hard to trust him when there are other dogs nearby. Any ideas on how I should approach this. Also he has ran off before and scared me like crazy because of a neighbor's dog.

1: Put up a fence, not always practical but it's the best option. 2: Keep him on a long line and supervise closely, dogs shouldn't be left unattended in places they can easily get out of no matter how well trained. You can teach him a solid recall so that if he did run off you can get him back, and of course you can teach him boundary control but be aware that most dogs will happily bolt through established boundaries if there is something interesting enough on the other side, even dogs trained on an electric fence will happily go through the highest level stims in order to chase a squirrel or other dog.

Hi Zak, and everyone. I have a 19 months old Corgi and Cairn terrier mix. recently, he had started to bark at pretty much anyone and their dogs (strangers) on our walks... it is getting a bit embarrassing. any idea what could have trigger this behavior? I have tried to use treats to get his attention before he barks, but as soon as he sees the other people and their dogs, it is almost impossible to get his attention back on me. at home, he is pretty much 100% reliable, come when called, he'd look when I tell him to etc. any info is appreciated, thank you!

As soon as your dog focusses on the distraction say "let's go" and walk in the opposite direction and create as much distance as needed to get your dog paying attention again. You may need to also add some "cool down" time. You can then try approaching the distraction again, but be ready to turn and walk away every time your dog reacts inappropriately. Remember to reward for not reacting and staying calm.

Not a bad idea to reteach tricks outside in the yard, since dogs can have trouble generalizing from an inside setting to an outside one with exciting sights and smells. From there you might be able to get a sit on a walk.

Hi zak, my b/collie, about 15 mo. Old, have trained to visual(hand)commands, and audio(whistle)stay,come. How do i train him to go left or right. As we are out in the field, sometimes he looses his ball, and i try to direct him, left or right. There is lots of software in that brain, just don’t know how to access whats in there.

There are hundreds of ways to teach this. The way I personally do it is to have a dog sit/stay and throw the ball a couple feet away to the left or right, then as you release them to fetch it you gesture with your arm in the direction. After a while you can introduce 2 balls and cast them off to either one using gestures and the fetch command. They learn quickly by association that the direction you point in is the direction they need to go. Lots of people teach their dogs to touch an object (e.g a cone) and place two of those cones either side of the dog. Then, give the dog the command to touch the cone and again gesture with your arm or use the commands "left" and "right". Most dogs naturally understand and follow the direction that a human points in but if yours doesn't you can guide them in the correct direction, or make sure that you place the cone you want them to go to much closer than the one you don't want them to go to. I would recommend Googling ways to teach a dog to "cast" and it should come up with heaps of different methods, at least one of which is bound to suit you and your dog.

Help i have been teaching my puppy her name by coming to me and giving her treats and i have been practicing this for 3 days but she never gets it what should i do?
@Bellencer
@Bellencer 6 жыл бұрын
Are you teaching her name or are you teaching a come command? Both are separate. For teaching the name I say their name in an excited tone of voice that causes them to look up, then immediately throw/hand them a treat. Practise that at random points throughout the day and they will slowly start to learn it, but it will take time and repetition especially for a young puppy. With teaching the name you DON'T want to teach puppy that when they hear their name they need to come over, you just want them to know that their name basically means "look at me". For teaching a recall/come command you want to encourage the puppy to come over to you and reward once they come over, once they get good at this you can introduce a command such as "here" or "come". Again, this is going to take a lot of time. Make sure you practise at least 4/5 times a day but keep each session extremely short, under 2 minutes at the most. They will pick it up eventually.
