He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book kzbin.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the kzbin.infoUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

I love seeing the "failing" ( I don't really know what to call it- I know it's not a failure) but to see how you handle it is so helpful and great cause it's real! Dog training isn't always pretty and that's likely to happen with us amateurs. Editing that out wouldn't have been helpful.

Arlen has the cutest face. I'd love to see more videos with her. :) I always enjoy the videos on unwanted barking. I live with a dog that goes crazy about barking. He will continue to bark until the person is inside the house and petting him. Once they pet him, he'll usually stop. Teaching him to calm down is going to be a long process, especially since he's about three years old and has never been taught anything about barking.

Your videos really helped train my puppy a lot. I got him when he was 2 months old. His name is Casper and he is an American Eskimo. He is 3 months old now and can properly do sit, lay down, stay, shake, high five flawlessly most of the time. And he doesn't even need a reward for it, most of the time I just praise him and that's just enough for him. Also, he knows how to let go when we are playing fetch, still struggling a bit with him not letting go at once but he is still young, we have a long way to go XD Right now I am training him to stop pulling on the leash. The first week of training him was kinda frustrating for me but then I started watching your videos, and everything started going so smoothly! Thanks a lot for helping me out

My shi-tzu/dutchan dog is making a huge progress because I follow your training methods! The only problem now is to teach my dog from heavy distractions. Thanks Zak! :)
@guitarman30018 жыл бұрын
You do that by gradually moving to bigger distractions. You can't train a dog with zero distractions then expect to be able to go from zero distractions to a lot of distractions. You need to gradually introduce the distractions. For example, let's say you're training a basic sit. You start in your kitchen. Your dog gets it down. Then you go to a crowded dog park and your dog refuses to sit. That's because you didn't gradually increase the distractions, you did it all at once. Move from kitchen, to living room, to porch/patio, to backyard, to front yard, to empty park, to park with people in it, to an empty dog park, and then you can move to a crowded dog park. Depending on the dog, every time you increase the distractions, you may have to start from the first step in training the behavior. On the bright side, since they already know the behavior in one context, they will likely respond faster in the new context.

Seeing this video inspired me to tackle my own dog's barking problem. He is fearful of new people coming into the home and barks when they enter even without knocking. I started by having the door wide open and sitting with my dog and banging on the door. He barked away even though he could see no one was there except me knocking on the door. We got that under control and are now working to approach the door calmly from different rooms without barking. I'm concerned that when we add strangers it will set him back. We will also have to work together to generalize to any house he feels at home in. We have our work cut out for us.

Thank you for posting this. This is one thing that really gets our dog going and it's so frustrating(he's a Great Dane so he also scares people with his energy level when they first knock) so of course everyone has an opinion on it. realhumanbean dogs don't generalize very well, so this exercise needs to be repeated multiple times with multiple different people before she starts to get the concept of "when someone is at the door, I look to my owner calmly to get a reward". Zak was just showing us how to set up that first training session and work from there.
@owleyes717 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that's part of the training. She gets rewarded for not responding to the knocking, and eventually they can work up to never barking at a knock. Obviously this can't be taught in one session.

hey. I love you training methods and they work really well for my almost 4 month old boarder collie (in photo). he's such a good pup and already knows the basics to a T and a few random ones to keep his mind moving like roll over. a little more difficult in a distracted area but he is still young. anyways. My situation is a little annoying. we live on a dairy farm which is fine but he seems to clean out our garage of the gumboots and his blankets when he's at home chilling after a big morning on the farm or when me and my partner have to milk and he wonders off home (has free range of farm but has never strayed from home). He has his little run that he lives in at night time there against the wall and hes happy to sleep in there during the day even. He has heaps of toys. squeekie. couple of tugs. balls. and bones and sticks he's randomly brought home from his adventures. but he still loves to take out all the gumboots to the lawn. a few chew marks but he doesn't seem to really play with them. I've put Vicks (fixes everything) around the edges and that worked. for a couple of days at a time and now we are just wasting it lol. any tips on why he does this? I was wondering if it was a "this is my space mum and dad" but once he started taking his blankets out (which he sleeps on in his house) I stopped thinking it. it is summer in NZ but it hasn't been that hot. thank you to anyone who knows how to help.

My dwarf poodle is near 2 years old. And never stops barking. Once outside, the barking doesn't stop. The attention is everywhere, very hyped and stimulated. The same goes when guests arrive at home. With the automatic bark collar, the sound beeps when the dog has barked for more than 3 seconds. It vibrated when the dpg barks again after 7 seconds from the first beep. And automatically turns off if the dog is still barking after 12 seconds from the vibration-- a feature that might indicate there is really something wrong around the environment, promoting the dog's natural instincts to bark. It is not cruel. Doesn't hurt the dog. The moment the collar beeped twice, our dog has absolutely learned there is no need to bark in unnecessary circumstances. Also with the collar, he understands that he does not need to bark. So he has learned to be relaxed outside the apartment. Now he does not chase bikes, joggers, cars. He also doesn't bark anymore at the sight of dogs that are at a distance. He is more relaxed, understanding there is no need to bark at everything, no need to be hyped at everything. It's really a game changer. My dog has learned to calm down. Now we can open our curtains and he has learned to just sleep in the sofa no matter what passes by the window. Please observe that we also clicker train him on walks and reward him for good behavior. So it's positive training plus this bark corrector tool. He also gets to run to the fenced dog forest every afternoon to chase birds, dip in the mud and play with other dogs. So it's a collective effort with lots of love.

Zak George, I have a 7 month old Chihuahua Terrier mix named Luna. I love her more than anything but she's really hyper and she loves to chew on everything especially things that are inedible such as plastic, carpet among other things. She also gets overexcited and Barks like crazy when someone comes over or Knocks on the door. she also has the issue of not returning to me when I call her which can be dangerous considering that I am disabled in a wheelchair I have cerebral palsy. I am unsure how to get her under control. I have been able to teach her some simple commands such as Sit Stay and leave it. but I would love to be able to get her barking and eating things under control as I am worried she might hurt herself. I do try to keep mostly everything off the floor to try to keep her from chewing things but she does at times get ahold of things to chew on. when she first started chewing things at the age of three months I decided to buy her a variety of toys to chew on but this has done little to curb her chewing on inedible things. even though she knows the command leave it if I tell her to stop chewing on something leave it alone she tends not to listen and I'm not sure what else to do.

I'm teaching my hand-shy fixated-yappy pomchi to associate knocking as a cue for Hush, going to Spot, Lay Down, and Stay Wish me luck lol! Edit: this hand-single-free non-verbal-cue concept isn't a foriegn one for her. I already taught her that the sound of the doorknob jiggling is a cue for sit, stay, hush, and focus whenever we're about to go outside. So i don't have to tell her to calm the heck down to put her harness anymore. She doesn't go running out the door the moment i open it. She doesn't bark at the neighbors anymore. I don't have to nag 6 different commands. Most of all, she hears the doorknob and remembers to look at me for guidance.

I trained some basics command before I go to work, played with him a little. Got home, ran around the yard with him, trained him again, and as I tried to do some dishes, he started barking at me. I've searched your youtube (and the internet) but can't find anything - so please, please please could you do something about teaching a dog to walk up and down stairs while on a leash -without pulling. I have a staffie who is a lovely softie, but of course very strong and super excited when it comes to going up and down stairs on our walks. Were working on leash training and he's getting better with that, but it all goes out the window when we get to the steps! I'm really worried about controlling him and think its just time until i get pulled over. I'd really appreciate a video on this - it must be an issue for loads of people!

Is this good for during walks? My border collie mix is anxious around strangers and she barks at people who walk by.

Hi Zac, my dog is extremely well-trained due to your fantastic videos and book! However, no matter what I do, I can't get her to stay calm and not bark while she's alone at home. It seems like I've tried everything! We recently have had to resort to expensive dog-sitting every time we cannot take her somewhere since we live in an apartment complex. How can I train her to relax when I'm not around?

I loved the video starting at 2:05, great tips and techniques to stop barking. Far too much advertising at the beginning of the video though.

Does this also work on a westie? Because I want to adopt one but they're known barkers so I wanna learn in advance ☺️

love your work! please please do a video on.how to correct excessive leash biting. Everytime I grab a leash my dogs get overly excited and will jump and bite the leash. even while walking I have difficulty with biting on the leash and sometimes they miss and bite my fingers. I've tried watching other videos and tried your positive rewarding approach but it doesn't help. I can't train him to walk appropriately on a leash when everytime I put it on him he decides to play tug-of-war. Please help me! for background on my dogs, I have a 1 year old male staffordshire terrier rescue mix and a 5 year old female boxer/terrier rescue mix. Both of them bite and tug on the leash and once they get it in their grasps they won't let go. I find myself having to pry it out of their mouth constantly and often getting bit in the process. Please help me!

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT, whenever I take him for walks, we have problems. He hates other dogs and other people sometimes even growls at us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!

Nice video (Y) But how would you do it with 2 dogs at the same time? We have a grown up 10 year old dog and a 3 year old dog and they both know very well how to bark..
