But don't forget to mention how important it is not to overdo it! They're still babies who are easily overwhelmed. With all this information out there about "how important it is to socialize a puppy", it's easy to forget common sense and spend all day dragging your puppy from one stressful situation to another. Just like training sessions at home, these outings need to be kept as short as their attention span is. Sometimes, less is more.

Totally. In other videos he mentions that training sessions should only be about ten minutes long maybe he should have said something along those lines here.

@@teamalit7667 Lol, the comment is three years old, but now that he's shown us his idea of how to raise a puppy, everything makes so much more sense: It's because he genuinely doesn't understand half the training advice he preaches.

Our pandemic puppy has been a struggle bus meeting new people. Even when I brought him home he was uncomfortable with my husband for over a week (even with treats and playtime). He just takes a while to warm up to new people and I wish he'd more readily expand his circle of human friends. He loves other dogs though and if we meet someone with a dog he's immediately more comfortable with them.

A 4-mo Beagle should fit under the seat. It is a bit cramped but the regs are different from cargo crate size. He is going to be scared either way, but less so as carry-on. He will be fine though, a scary day and then it is done.

Is it possible to find out where and what kind of harness this little chihuahua is wearing? We have a 4.4 lb toy chihuahua-min pin mix who is super skinny apx. 3-year-old rescue and she'd struggled out of her harness and chewed one up. It's very difficult to find one that fits her. This one that Leia is wearing, looks like it might work. It would be a great help to try this one on our little doggy.
@crosita1
@crosita1 8 жыл бұрын
Mine aren't quite that small but check out Puppia brand. Also, don't leave it on all the time--any dog who is bored and not used to a harness will try to chew their way out if unsupervised. Once they love it because it means walks and outings, they will be less likely to do that.
@rchoi27
@rchoi27 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I will check it out. Since our dog was a rescue, we have no idea what would offset her. She did not want to be leashed when I was sitting down while she's leashed to my wrist. It's been more than a year of having her with us, there are still times when she completely freaks out and tries to get out of her harness.

She likes to run away from the house and doesn't come back for days. We live in forest and there are villages around us. How to stop her to do that. We did the castration after she had puppies, but she is still running away. What to do with her? Our vet said that she will always do that and there is nothing to do. We don't wont to keep her in box or on leash. Thanks for the help and your videos.

Hi Zak. You know the way the dog barked at the puppy. Well I have a question. My when I addopted her was already terrified of dogs in a way that its impossible to walk her any further. Now we can just lift her and walk away but she is ment to grow to around 25kg and thats gonna be a problem. She is also very scared of loud sounds and believe or not, dog toys too. We dunno what to do with her.

I just got a puppy and he is terrified to walk on a leash. He refuses to move when I have a hold of it but when I let go or have him off leash he runs away. How do I get him to walk with me on leash?
@Persona4fansVideos
@Persona4fansVideos 8 жыл бұрын
Make sure to let him sniff the leash and your hand, yet make sure he knows the leash isn't a toy to chew on. Comfort him while he's on the leash and just leave it on while you play with him and reward him. While he's distracted take ahold of the leash, reward him with treats and love and attention and then let go and repeat gradually. Once the puppy knows you holding the leash is nothing to be afraid of, try walking around the house with him on the leash- if he's too scared to move encourage him to you with treats and toys and act very happy and playful and welcoming and reward him for moving while you have grip on the leash, gradually move around more before giving treats, testing different speeds and surfaces and showing the puppy new things that he'll see while on the leash.

I've had my puppy for 2 months now. He's extremely friendly and does very well with new people and new dogs. I live with my in-laws who have 2 dogs of their own. These dogs can't stand the puppy. They both become very aggressive of the puppy gets near to them. We've tried to slowly introduce them but nothing seems to help.
@crosita1

Older dogs, especially if they have painful arthritis, can hate being jumped on by puppies. Some adults just find them annoying at best. If you give the adults a way to get away from the puppy and reward them for tolerating the puppy for short amounts of time at first, they will learn to put up with the puppy. No guarantee that they will ever want to play with the pup though, and if they don't the pup must learn to respect that or the adult will escalate from warnings to punishment. Just try to keep the little one from bugging them to play a lot.
@Kynarreth
@Kynarreth 8 жыл бұрын
The older dogs aren't that old, they have no arthritis or anything like that. Unfortunately there has been no toleration, as soon as they see him, even if its just through a window, they become very aggressive and start barking and try to attack the puppy.

At what age do you start socializing? Should I own my dog/gain trust for a few days/weeks/months before bringing it somewhere foreign and introducing it to foreign people/animals?

Jack Carlos I would get her to know you really well the first few weeks & then start I've had my German Shepard alittle over a month and I've already taken her to places like pet stores/parks/walks around my neighborhood. The sooner you start the better

Whippets can be very good. They like to sleep a lot during the day but are always ready play when you want them to. Particularly since you want a dog that can go on bike rides with you.

Hi, Zak! I know this isn't about the video, but, my dog has a dog aggression problem. She loves humans, acts like the other dog just killed her family. We noticed it was really bad when we went to a trick class, and showed her bare teeth and snapped. How do I stop this? Thanks.

I have a neighbor who dogs act very aggressive when they see my dog or any other dog. And the owners never correct them, they just let them act aggressively towards other dogs and even humans. It's very important to correct this behavior and let your dog know you do not approve of this behavior. Socializing your dog with humans and other dogs is very important. If you feel like your dog could possibly hurt another dog you should have your dog wear a muzzle. Until his behavior gets better.

Thank you. I never wanted her to get to the point of wearing a muzzle, but I'll have to try one. Thank you. (Not the one that stop them from breathing/barking)

Your welcome, I use to go through this with my dog. After a lot of training and letting her know I'm the boss not you type of approach. Things have been great, she's friendly with people and other dogs. If a dog were to show an aggressive behavior she is trained to simply walk away.

Hey, Zak! Do you have any tips on resociallizing a dog? My one year old Australian Shepherd recently was attacked by another much larger dog while on a walk, and he was injured pretty severely. He's not ready to go back out into the public regularly, but I'd like some tips to help him when he is ready to go back out into the world. I'd hate for him to fear going on walks or hiking or going to the park because of this incident.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to find it. Long story short, socializing your dog with other humans and animals is the best thing for your dog. Keep in mind that this accident is in the past. Keep encouraging your dog to want to go for a walk or to the dog park. Maybe even call a friend or family member that has a friendly dog and make a play date. This may take a few days or even weeks. The whole point is to never give up. Also learning how to stay calm and relaxed on walks can help your dog as well. If you see that your dog is starting to get scared. Avoid picking him up or giving him affection. This will only feed that behavior. hope this was helpful

Be gentle and slow with your dog after a trauma like this. Just like a human, a dog will be scared after having been the victim of an attack and can take a very long time to feel safe in situations that remind her of the attack, if ever. Choose the next dogs she meets carefully, picking friendly dogs who are good at respecting other dogs' space. Once she starts enjoying new dogs again, you can add in more excitable but dog-friendly dogs. At all costs, prevent another fight. Get a stun baton and be ready to use the noise and, if needed, the shock to drive off an unfriendly dog. You cannot expect a dog to choose not to defend herself if you can't protect her instead. If she does show signs of reactivity, get a positive trainer to help you. Even one or two lessons can help a lot.

I have been going slow with him. Strangely enough, he seems to do fine with my brothers' dogs (they were brought into the house and reintroduced in a calm and controlled manner), but he seems to be much less distrusting of strange people. It's almost as if he understands it was the other owner being irresponsible (the other dog was not on a leash, when we were in an area he definitely should have been). I have tried having him sit and turning my back to the person he is meeting to show him they are not a threat, and I've had them give him treats after he's smelled them for a bit. He hasn't bitten anyone yet but he is much more defensive and wary.

Take it in a cart to pet friendly places like your local hardware stores and such. Socializing is more than just dog to dog interaction. You also want to expose them to new sounds and sights. People and situations. Make sure they are all positive experiences though.

+Jose Ahumada I never really thought of that. do you think random spots like spots on the side of the road are good places to bring my dog who hasn't been fully vaccinated yet
@crosita1
@crosita1 8 жыл бұрын
You can and should socialize your dog before completely vaccinated. This is because more dogs die from behavior problems stemming from under-socialization than from catching one of the illnesses vaccinated against (according to the AVMA). Best is to discuss with your vet but basically, dogs you KNOW are healthy and vaccinated (and friendly!) are safe. Avoid areas with lots of dog traffic, dog poop or garbage, or areas where stray dogs hang out. If you want to hang out in a random roadside spot, put down a dog bed or blanket so puppy is not on the ground. Once you pass the 12 week age, the natural socialization period is over and you are doing "remedial" socialization which is much more difficult and slower. Act early.

Hey Zak, great videos! I have a question... my chocolate lab pup, 3 1/2 months old, loves to meet new people but gets overly excited and like to greet them with a fury of paws and his mouth. when I control him with leash and harness he starts to get very vocal. Any advice? My biggest concern is that he will hurt a child even though he isn't being aggressive and is only excited.
