as a disabled person who became disabled in my teens, i ADORED the fact they made hiccup lose his leg. it just meant a lot to see a kids character who’s the HERO have some sort of disability, and even one we see happen as well that isn’t framed in a very pitying way. not to mention he learned to adapt for toothless’ disability which just so happens to mirror his own, and they can take on the world together as disabled buddies doing cool shit. i still haven’t seen any of the other movies, but i know i need to sometime because i’ve heard at least the trilogy is really good

The first time I saw this movie as a kid, I was super impressed by the decision to have Hiccup lose a leg after his fight with the dragon, especially in a kids film produced by Dreamworks. It creates an interesting parallel to Toothless, since they're the same now.

Also disability representation for kids! I can imagine that it felt good for any physically disabled kid to see an amputee main character in a popular franchise! Edit: I forgot, there are also lots of other amputee characters of all ages and genders, as well as strong female characters in every movie that are integral to the story Edit 2: omg this movie keeps unfolding sorry lmao but this movie also shows how people with a common problem (i.e. being disabled) can work together to become strong and face adversity. Not only is this movie fabulously made, it's an important movie for ALL ages.

I really liked Toothless’s interactions with Stoick in this film, especially near the end. It really adds to show that dragons are capable of complex thought like humans are. Stoick had been nothing but hostile towards both Toothless and Hiccup (that Toothless had witnessed), so he had no reason to save Stoick at the end. Saving him anyway proved that the dragons aren’t mindlessly evil. Plus the callback to the flying scene with Astrid too. Toothless didn’t reveal Hiccup was safe until Stoick had apologized for his actions.

@jasperanda2769 Жыл бұрын
I wonder how they would've written the story with that concept of Astrid being the antagonist of the movie. It would change a huge part of the series and the plots we see definitely wouldn't be the same. We would probably see Astrid tell Stoick about Hiccup and Toothless, instead of keeping his secret and helping him. That itself would change a lot and poses some interesting questions as to what this version would look like. Would Toothless still be captured or would we see Hiccup running off to escape with Toothless? If they escape, where would they go and what would be their next step? Would we still see the nest in this version? If Toothless isn't captured, how would they find the nest? Would the other teenagers still help Hiccup? Would Stoick continue to despise dragons or would he still have a moment where how he sees them changes? What is the reason Astrid hates/dislikes Hiccup (Are her parents pushing her to become a great dragon hunter and Hiccup is getting in the way of that? Did a family member get killed by a dragon?), what is her motivation? It is definitely an interesting concept, though in my opinion would be a totally different movie/series. I am sorry about the rambling, it just got me think about what that would've looked like.

When Gobbler explained about the two-headed dragon, that one head produces gas while another lights it, it was actually setting up the fact that dragon fire works by producing a gas that they light in fire. Then, the scene with the tiny dragon showing they're not fireproof on the inside. Meaning that when they fought the queen, Hiccup had to wait until the queen had produced the gas, which you can see if you pay attention, and made Toothless shoot before the queen could light it up-making the gas turn to fire while it was still inside the queen, and turning her into basically a huge hot air balloon filled with burning gas that exploded when she hit the ground. It's why they waited until the has was built up before Toothless actually shot at her and it's brilliant storytelling.
@hafrensbz90462 жыл бұрын
Oh wow!!! Never realised this. Thanks you so much!! Love the story telling for sure.
@dbseamz2 жыл бұрын
There is at least one type of dragon whose fire isn't produced that way; the Monstrous Nightmare's spit ignites when in contact with air. That's how they can coat themselves in flames, and that also explains both the things that confused Dylan in the early fight scene: the rock itself wasn't burning, just the goo that the dragon spat on it, and the "lava" on the pillar that Dylan thought was melting iron was in fact more of the same goo.

something i really love about toothless' personality that you might have not noticed is the fact that somehow this dragon understands the concept of aknowledging your wrongs and saying sorry. when he meets astrid he only starts being nice to her after she apologizes to hiccup during the flight scene, thats when he switches to a flight mode much more pleasing. this also happens at the end of the film when the father and rest of the village think that toothless wasnt able to save hiccup from the fires explosion. toothless only opens his wings to reveal hiccups actually safe when his father shows true regret and says sorry. this film is filled with little details that you only notice after watching it a hundred times (like i did) or after someone tells you and thats why i never get tired of watching it

It's honestly the best Western animation film series to ever exist! Amongst the likes of Ice Age and Shrek film series, HTTYD actually managed to pull off not just one or two, but all THREE movies! Out of all the garbage we've seen, this is seriously quite the commendable feat ngl!

@blorbidorbi2 жыл бұрын
@@tegztegz It was so brave of dreamworks to allow the characters in an animated kids' franchise to grow up and become adults, since usually kids' characters are left the same age forever just to make the most profit for as long as possible. But with HTTYD, the kids who saw the first movie in 2010 got to really grow up with the characters over the span of almost 10 years, and as one of those kids, it was super special to see the last film at 21 years old and bawl my eyes out when it ended, realising that I had also grown up. The whole trilogy is just so refreshing and wonderful.

not sure if anyone cares lmao but on top of it being an act of trust for both characters, this is also the case with other animals, particularly horses which I imagine the team knew since the dragons' movements mimic other real animals. people are divided on if this is true or not but if to be believed: if you want to pet one and it isn't very used to humans, to show you're not a threat and respect its space, you have to use submissive body language at first - you aren't supposed to approach quickly head-on unless it's one that knows you well. you want to avoid hard eye contact and approach near their shoulders/side and watch for their comfortability before touching.

Loved this commentary, but as a very loyal fan of the HTTYD series, I would like to enter the conversation: Hiccup doesn't conquer dragons, he doesn't enslave them (not like some villains further along in the series), and the reason why he was the only one who could tame them, was because he was the only one who was shown the intelligence and the love and loyalty dragons can feel and developed techniques to create a bond of trust. Both equals in the relationship. Toothless isn't a pet, he allows Hiccup on his back because he trusts him.

I mean, if you're reffering to riders of berk and race to the edge i think its unfair to degrade them to just a cash grab. The amount of expanding lore, character development and intresting characters they added has a lot of value. Sure some of it doesn't entierly fit with the movies but still. The series detailing what happened between the 5 year time skip had a lot of thought put into it. However, if you're reffering to rescue riders.. i haven't watched it so i can't say for sure, but i can see what you mean if thats the show you're reffering to.

Riders and defenders of Berk were okay but Race to the Edge was fantastic. The villains were good, especially Viggo, and it filled in the huge jump between the first 2 movies. The music in all three films is just OUTSTANDING. Also OH MY GOD can we talk about that SOUND DESIGN in the entire scene "Test Drive"?! The clicks of the gears, the whooshing air, just ahh so good. Talk about an eargasm. Not to mention the animation....some of the shots they get are stunning. It makes you feel like you're there on this Night Fury. Imagine seeing this in the theaters in 3D. I never got to see it in 3D, just 2D and I feel like I missed out. But god the details are so good especially on Toothless. They're smart in not COMPLETELY covering him with highly detailed scales, you just see that his skin is hard and rough, and the details are around his face-the ears, eyes and mouth. His paws and tail are also more detailed when it's an extreme close up. And a favorite detail is the air streams when Hiccup pulls Toothless out of the dive. And during that sequence, they're smart enough to never have too many wide shots-only once to have a bird's eye view of them moving in sync. But it's always a medium shot to feel that power. It's stunning. GOD DAMN STUNNING DIRECTION. This is why I love animation-while sound design in ANY film is hard to do and a LOT of work, in animation it's even MORE so a lot of hard work...Just imagining how many audio files they must've had to work with in all three films.....man. Animation in western film is extremely under appreciated and it's criminal. The OST for most animations are often ten times better than scores for live action films. Everything about animation is an art. And it should be god damn respected. "Test Drive" and "Coming Back Around" are some of my favorite scores of all time. It just makes you feel free, and it's so uplifting the composer John Powell is top tier. How he weaves motifs into certain parts of film is just MMMM. So good.

3 movies, 2 tv shows and a bunch of shorts and they didn't mess up any of it. Like this is one of the best series where its consistently good throughout all of it enduring multiple writers and shows over many years. Its also so impressive how the worldbuilding intersects through all of it. The King of Dragons thing coming through in the second movie as well as in the Netflix show or the Hiccup's mom thing or even in the smaller arcs with Alvin and Dagur or Heather. Getting to know each dragon and their rider and their dynamics over multiple series is insane and I will stand by this being one of the most well made kids worlds ever created.

I'm pretty sure the story implies that Hiccup is the one who ripped off Toothless' tail when his invention trapped him. There's really a beautiful symbolism with Toothless + Hiccup's tail and leg from where they started (murder and fighting) to the bond they ended up creating (where they'd literally put their lives up for eachother). A dragon is a vikings best friend. 🐉 Also these dragons are allergic to eels (the 1st series explains it)

this film was released the same year as Tangled, and I remember seeing both of them in the cinema that year. I still remember just how wowed I was by them both, even though I was like 8, and even now I still remember them as some of the best cinema experiences I've ever had. HTTYD did hold a special place in my heart because of the setting though. I'm Swedish, so I had learnt about vikings and some of their/old Nordic culture in general in school not long before I saw the movie. I remember thinking how cool it was that I could recognise some of the clothing from the pictures I'd seen in class, and that I could "read" (pronunce) some of the runic script that was shown in the dragon book, etc. (the scripture spell out words in English, so I couldn't understand much, but it was still really cool that I could phonate some of them)

Physics major here. I made a lot of estimations, and I mean a LOT, but ultimately I got that a dragon of that size should have wings that are about 600 times larger than the ones it has in order to be able to fly (not considering whether or not it’d be able to move those wings, of course). So yeah, unlikely. Some things that could potentially make it possible for such a large being to fly: a higher air density, a lower gravitational pull, having a ridiculously low mass, having jet engines.

Toothless lost his backwing when Hiccup captured him, remember, he could fly perfectly fine before he got trapped in the ropes. That's also why it was so smart for them to make Hiccup lose his foot. The reason he lost it is because Toothless tried to save him from the fall and bit his foot in order to grab him. So they're kinda even now. Please react to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimaron. It's my favorite animated movie ever.
