This franchise did something different from most kid franchises. The characters grew up. Hiccup is very different in the sequel. He's older, more confident, happy with himself for the most part. Being I think either 18 or 20 in the second one and it shows, no longer that young teenager full of insecurities, coming into his own. Astrid is also more mature and their relationship is more mature and not quite that young teenage love. The third one furthered their character development. It didn't dumb down for kids and make them childish (Shazaam should learn from this honestly). Development carries from movie to movie. The TV show just shows hiccup between movie 1 and 2 coming into that confident leader as well as endeer you more to the side characters who do not get much screen time in the movies.

I give Astrid a lot of credit in the movie. Hiccup was never good at being a Viking, so when he realized a different path it’s easy for him to take it. Astrid is full blown Viking and is good at it, probably the best in her age group, yet she is able to fully analyze the situation and completely change her moral stance on the matter. I teach kids that are this age, NONE of them, not even the good ones, are able to do that. That is extreme maturity. A lot of adults never are able to do that.

An important detail that people often miss is that the terrible terror or whatever it's called that hiccup is supposed to kill for his trial bursts out of the enclosure and into the cage and at first COMPLETELY ignores hiccup and looks for a way out. Only once it realizes that it's trapped does it turn its attention towards the human.

It's an absolutely magical movie The music by John Powell sells every scene Seeing how Hiccup *actually* learns about the dragons and how to "deal" with them versus how the book says to (aka kill it and live to tell the tale) because he's interacting with one beyond raids and training Stoic and Astrid's growth, both in how Stoic sees his son despite his apparent weaknesses/quirks and how Astrid realizes just how much Hiccup truly cares for Toothless even if it means being essentially excommunicated

The dragons have an empathic sense, and are just a little telepathic, which is how the big dragon controls them. And that's how Toothless (and the other dragons) react differently depending on what the other person's intent is. Even at the beginning, after Hiccup launched his net "Did anybody see that?... Except for you." He's the enemy, so the dragon's after him, but he doesn't immediately fry him to a crisp, because he's so clearly not a threat. Even when the big dragon is released for Hiccup's final exam, his initial attempts were solely about escape, not aggression (likewise after the mountainside was opened up; they weren't trying to attack, just fleeing). Later, once the teens drop the fear and hostility, then the dragons are cool with hanging out. And that's why Toothless changes his attitude when someone says they're sorry.

What a surprise. Seriously. This is a series, show and all, that I introduced my grandfather to. One he absolutely fell in love with. It resonates with him in a way nothing else in his life has- and I can relate, in my own way. Through another show, called Berserk. It's amazing, when you connect so wholeheartedly with something, and even moreso, that he was able to. He's in the other room listening to the movie OSTs right now. You guys are in for a treat. If you're watching the _show_ aswell, it, fittingly, for a show about a bunch of kids finding themselves & their way, starts a little awkward. Endearingly so, I'll say, considering your initially nonplussed reception of the start of DBZA. Beyond all that, like I said, about good ol' Gpa. These movies are special to us- and in our own way, we use them to mourn my grandmother. The one I lost before I'd found your channel. I don't doubt you'll find some kind of emotional connection to it, too. -...also, can we talk about how breathtaking the flying scenes in the clouds were? ...ALSO, if we're considering the series? If you loved Gohan, you'll absolutely fall in _love_ with the main cast in its entirety. _-also also,_ Toothless is very much a boy. HTTYD is very much a story about _the unique kind of love between brothers._

In the scene where Toothless is flying Hiccup and Astrid up and through the clouds, it's easy to take that scene for granted. Things like hang-gliding, skydiving and parasailing are pretty common for us, but for them? Most of the people in that time, probably, were never more than a few feet of the ground. The highest anyone ever got would be if they were climbing a tree. Flying would be just a dream, if that. Being above the clouds and mountains, looking down, would be a view that only the Gods would have. So that experience would have been life-changing for Astrid. Also, you note that when Astrid first saw Toothless, her first instinct was to throw Hiccup down and try to protect him?

In my opinion, this is one of those rare franchises where each movie only gets stronger. They build on each other, and each one makes the previous ones better in retrospect. I honestly can't even really say which one is 'best' - it's one continuous story. EDIT: The TV show also continues that trend. I believe it's entirely set between HTTYD 1 & 2, but you could just as easily watch it after all three. I've only seen the original 8 season show, but I've heard good things about Rescue Riders and The Nine Realms, which I believe are a bit more removed from the events of the movies.

Fyi the TV shows are awesome and 100% canon. Tons of world building, epic story, great characters. Its worth a watch and highly recommended since it just adds so much more depth to the characters and world. Its one of those rare instances where a TV series made off movies is actually plot relevant and not just a money grab. Writers put lots of love into the story. Id argue the overall story is as good as ATLA. Words cant describe how good it is but youll be blown away if you watch it since not many people do. The story is also very mature and is most definitely NOT just a show for kids.

This movie is my all time favorite for three things; Humor, Fun Characters, and SOUNDTRACK! Every song is amazing. Forbidden Friendship in particular is outstanding as it carries a 4 minute scene that takes Hiccup and Toothless from "I guess we aren't trying to kill each other" to "I trust you" with ZERO dialogue. That is an amazing journey that very few movies would dare to try to tell without dialogue, forget doing it all animated.

Assuming I'm remembering it from the behind-the-scenes material correctly the one dragon is called Red Death and was supposedly a female so when Astrid makes the queen comparison she isn't too far off. Mostly in that it's more of a forced position/title as the dragon isn't responsible for populating the nest just reaping all the benefits of the smaller dragons which leads to something interesting in the 2nd movie I'd argue. The part I'm really trying to remember where I had seen or read it is that for the scene where Hiccup & Toothless are flying up away from the flames following the crash, they actually extended the size/length of the dragon slightly to make the scene a little longer or something like that. Honestly you should also check out Dreamworks Dragons: The Series (Riders of Berk; Season 1, Defenders of Berk; Season 2) & Race to the Edge that cover the time between this and the second film along with some of the shorts/specials like Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon. While they're not absolutely necessary to watch the 2nd film the two series in particular do explain some of the things it has. Rescue Riders & The Nine Realms are a bit more detached from them and the trilogy primarily as they have their own cast of characters separate from Hiccup, Toothless & the others beyond references and that their audiences weren't necessarily the same group as those that grew alongside the movies and 2 series.

You should do most of the shows as well. Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge are the series I consider essential if you want the complete Viking era experience. All thre series are set between the first and second films. There are no shows set between the second and third films. The 2 series you can get away with not watching are Rescue Riders and The Nine Realms, though The Nine Realms is an actual part of the Dragons universe of the first 3 films and series, as the main character and his dragon are both descendents of Hiccup and Toothless respectively, and that series is sprinkled with hints that the Legacy of Berk lived on for a while before being forgotten over the intervening 1300 years. The other series, Rescue Riders is geared for toddlers and has no canonical connection to the rest of the IP that I am aware of. So that one can be skipped all together. Watch The Nine Realms only if you are curious about what happens in the saga generations after the original stories. You may enjoy it, but it is its own thing while being technically connected. Have fun...

What's great about this franchise is unlike a lot of animated franchises the sequels do not disappoint

Such a good movie. Portrays vikings in a positive light for once. Has a great premise and the animation is pretty good. The characters and comedy were great. There wasnt any feeling of propaganda talking points being pushed. Toothless is a male by the way. I feel like his relationship with hiccup is that of a childhood friends. You will find out toothlesses age in the next movie. It might make more sense then too why he was so easily influenced. It also kind of reflects a good parenting bond that hiccup was missing from his father. He wanted his fathers approval but after saving toothless by showing him mercy toothless showed the same back protecting him in the arena. The movie also showed how they didnt start with that relationship they had to grow on each other and gain his trust. Something his father never had the time for as cheif or was willing to do. It also was kind of like a pet and his owners relationship by portraying toothless and the dragons as having dog or cat pet actions. I agree that not showing a comparison to one pet or another is great. They focused on the pet and their owners relationship in general which I think is the best way to do it. They will answer your questions about why some dragons are mean and others arent in the sequals and the tv shows. It will also give a bit more depth into hiccops family relationship and why his dad was so dissapointed he wouldnt be a dragon killer at 1st. Without giving any spoilers or exact details I will leave you with this.... he is projecting his frustrations onto how he is raising hiccup. As for how and why you will see in the 2nd movie. It also kind of explains why he was so quick to forget the past life style and forgive the dragons.

If you watch both the series, you should watch them before the second movie because that is about when they take place, or you should at least watch the first series before the second movie because that is when it was produced.

You should do a reaction to Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge. It's basically an animated adaptation of the first Mortal Kombat's plot, with particular focus on Scorpion.
