They are wily creatures. Let me know how exercise 1 goes. THe problem is that most people try to get their metronome to do "advanced agility" before they teach the metronome basic obedience. That's what Exercise 1 will help with! ;-)

Training the metronome. I like it!!! (so...tossing it across the room won't help??? ;). Thanks, Lora, I needed this! I hate the metronome...but this makes sense to me. I like the idea of practicing with it before jumping in and using it along with a song. Great video, as always!!

Hey Marco, Good that you have pinpointed your weakness. So I would start on half notes, get comfy with them....then add quarter notes. And so on. If you are patient, you will find that you can eventually master 16th notes and even faster. Good luck!

Hi Terry, man, every time I recommend a product, it gets discontinued....it has happened to 2 different metronomes, and 1 chinrest. (plus my favorite perfume (Rive Gauche) and my favorite deodorant (No Sweat). So, I have a curse. I am currently researching good metronomes that are AVAILABLE since my 2 faves got discontinued. But what I would recommend is that you get an ALL IN ONE (metro, tuner, pitch generator), with SPEAKER ON FRONT, 3 octaves of pitch generators, and if possible, a nice wood-block tone....but that's optional). I have been using a KORG TM-40, which I did a review on back in 2011. It is still going strong. My only complaint is it is not very loud (but it's loud enough, and you can plug it into computer speakers), and it has an electronic beep instead of a woodblock tone. But this thing only cost $25....and it's DURABLE. So, check that out. Meanwhile, I have some good research started for the ULTIMATE METRONOME.....more to come on that....

Loralyn Staples Thank you for taking time out to answer my question. I will go with the Korg, as my old high school standup black plastic metronome with taped up electric cord will be pitched. It’s been since 1969 that I haven’t kept up with metronomes. You made me laugh about the “grass perfume”. That’s how I feel about Jade East too. Now, I can’t get that when I practice violin. LOL. I don’t wear perfume, farm smells only! LOL. I do appreciate you as a hard working teacher, as I am retired from teaching, and don’t miss all of the bombard me questions that I’ve already discussed! 🤪

Hi, I have recently picked up the violin as an instrument that I want to learn, I haven’t previously learned any instruments, but I decided that I would like to start learning. I found myself a teacher and I’ve been going to violin lessons for about two weeks now. Now to get to the meat of my question, I have been practicing to play along with a metronome to enhance my rhythm. I use a metronome app on my phone and I don’t have a problem with the app. However, I cannot seem to be able to focus on the metronome clicks when I’m bowing and I would either focus on the clicks or on bowing but can never do both at the same time. Is there a way for me to perhaps focus on the metronome without forsaking my bowing?
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 5 жыл бұрын
HI Ro, in all honesty, I would wait until you have the basics down before trying to play along with a metronome. You can work on your rhythm by clapping to the metronome, and build your coordination that way. It's just that the first basics of violin are SO DEMANDING mentally, that you really need to develop some habits and muscle memory. THEN.....I would try ONLY playing open strings in different rhythms to the metronome. And only after you are good at that, I would introduce the left hand into the mix. But there's NO HURRY....you are a newbie, and if I were your teacher I would say give it 9-12 months to get the basics, and then introduce the skill of following a metronome.

@@RedDesertViolin Thank you so much, I've only been playing for a month as of today, and was thinking I needed to learn all this AND a metronome. I think I'll just add clapping (which I can do sitting in my car on my lunch break) to work on rhythm that way, and not worry about it during my private violin sessions.

@@RedDesertViolin Thank you. I've played about 1,5 years and whenever I've tried to play with a metronome, what happens is that I will play whatever I want while doing my best to ignore the metronome that ticks at its own pace. It frustates me so much I end up not doing it at all, but I will try from the easy exercises you outlined here.

Yes, metronomes love to ignore us. HOnestly, even a cheap metronome is trainable.....as long as it is loud enough, or has lights that you can easily see. The most important feature in my opinion is that it is loud enough. And I am a fan of the "woodblock tone" instead of tiny little electronic beeps. (I find those irritating....but that's probably just the old-school in me) Keep working with the little guy. He'll come around eventually! ;-)
@4321Wo
@4321Wo 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Loralyn :-) I'll see that my next metronome has a woodblock tone or a similar natural sound. I use this device most often with Sevcik bow technique etudes. Because Sevcik gave a lot of tempo information there, and the metronome prevents me from often tricking myself, or becoming faster after several bars. Have a nice weekend!
