I always drew freehand because I felt like I would be cheating if I didn't. What a relief to know that even professional artists use tips and tricks, so if they can then I, as an amature certainly can too!. This saves me so much self doubt that I am not good enough. Thank you so much Jason!
@bigkingsha9 жыл бұрын
This is great for achieving photo realism. I say if you have excellent drawing skills already you really have nothing further to prove. This is just a shortcut and it speeds up the workload. If you're a person who can't draw very well...yeah - this could be considered cheating - BUT this could also help improve the way you interpret correct spacial recognition. Many people don't understand that after you have the image transferred to canvas, you still must call up the incredible skill of filling it in with paint hues, values, sharpness, edge blurring, light sources and texture. The sketch or drawing can take a few minutes to a few hours, but the paint going on top of it could take days, weeks, months or years! In the end you are still accessing your higher skill to make this work. This is no different than an architect who uses rulers, mathematics and landscaping tools or a musician who uses a metronome to keep good time. Imagine a tailor who never uses a dummy to design a dress or suit...it would be a disaster! We all need tools that help us to build and refine perfection in artistic expression. Excellent video!

my drawing skills are pretty good but i have found using these techniques help. when im painting ill do a trasing drawing then a free hand and ill do a 3rd trasing drawing. it helps my brain see what i need to improve in my free hand drawing and helps my brain figure out how i want the final painting or colored pencil drawing will go. i can also practice different backgrounds i want to try and see which will ill good in the final piece :)
@pabrown697 жыл бұрын
king shaman Bs it's cheating. How you get the image on the canvas or paper doesn't matter. It's how you render the final image. I know some well paid artists who use projectors or light boxes to be sure to get an accurate rendering of their subject. Are they cheaters?

Thank you that was very informative. I cannot draw but have recently taken colouring and now painting. I purchased some stamped canvas to paint. Of course you are limited to what you can do because you're at the mercy of what is available. I will never be an "artist" but I find this so relaxing. I work at a very high stress job and this has become my outlet.

Jason, also wanted to comment on all the postings claiming transferring is cheating....many great masters had other artists in training prepare their canvas including the sketch for them. Then they would take over with all the detail, so I don't look at transferring as cheating, I consider it just an individual choice. Life is short...enjoy and don't worry bout it!

hi again Jason, a variation I often use is to print a draft of the photo on thin cheap photocopier paper, thinnest cheapest i can get, use a 2" graphite stick and literally use the side of the stick to cover the whole of the bit i want to paint on the back of the draft photo, tape it to the canvas and draw over the outline, same as you would with graphite paper, and you don't need to ruin the original photo if it's a customers. it seems easier than getting hold of graphite paper, at a pinch a beginner could just use a soft pencil lead to cover the back(how i used to do it,but takes longer than a graphite stick. great video again my friend, i have used the projector method on the walls of a residential home for some ww2 artwork I did there, and my sons bedroom wall with a call of duty image. my freehand sketching is fine but since discovering some of these methods I have not looked back and I'm producing much more professional looking work. thanks again Dan.

Thanks so much for this info Jason! I do have a question on projection/transferring. I have created a drawing on paper and want to paint it, however, I want the painting to be larger than the original drawing. So unfortunately I can't use my usual method of transfer paper. I know I can use projection to go larger but have no clue what I need or how to do this. Do you happen to have a youtube tutorial on this method of transfer?
@tgheinze8 жыл бұрын
Karen Balon One way is to take your drawing to Kinkos and have it enlarged and printed. Or if you have the right software, you can do it yourself. For example, take a photo of the drawing and rescale it to the dimensions for your canvas, making sure you keep the aspect ratio correct. Mac and PC both have built in apps for this. The trick is to then print it on multiple sheets of paper and tape them together. You need to have software that prints this way, usually called "poster" mode..

Dear Jason thank you for your suggestions, although in the first way I suggest you could skip more time if you could PRINT the image in Milimeter Paper so you save time from orienting the spaces horizontally and vertically. Also I try to figure if there is a similar way for time saving if one can "print" the image on the paper canvas in a very light way of course instead of transferring with the hand. Has anybody tried that , is that efficient, please give your responses! Thank you so much, I am Catherine from Greece♥

Thanks for touching on this subject. I was just reflecting today if the grid method is cheating. As an Art teacher, I always have the tendency to encourage free hand drawing since I have to assess my student's ability to observe, and draw. How do I assess this if the grid method is being used. Right? However, I also agree that this method has been used by great masters. Therefore, I introduce observational drawing( freehand) first, let them develop this skill before introducing the grid method. The latter also requires skills since one needs to be able to understand proportion and I suppose still be able to observe and transfer. Thank you for this wonderful video . Really appreciate it. Tassy
@greenglass24 жыл бұрын
i use grid drawing but now i mostly use carbon tracing but no carbon paper. just flip the page up and down and paint what you saw there. animators draw cartoons like this. the paper gets paint on the back though but you have a direct comparison what you painted to fix it.

Jason Morgan As you may or may not know society itself is changing. It will not be possible for much longer to make money off of selling DVDs as many artists are doing. I know another young man who is staring out gives full demo shows on youtube as he knows as well. I suggested he take donations as people still need money in this system till the system changes to a sharing type economy called the resource based economy. End of money due to technology replacing the worker. Those who adapt will continue. Those who don't will not or will be forced to adapt. We are in a changing times in our who system due to technology. I would not have followed you for years if it was not for the web. I found you via web. You are where my ancestors are from and I would have never have heard of you otherwise unless you wrote and old fashioned book and sold it in the US. I love technology for this reason. The bad uses will technology in the people's hands it's it cure.
