"They" say you are never too old to learn, and I'm living proof, at age 75, that "they" are right! I cannot begin to tell you how much I have benefitted from the wide array of knowledge you impart through your videos! I started embroidering at the age of six and finished my first dresser scarf (orange day lilies on a white cotton) at age seven. I just want to thank you, again, for your willingness to share your knowledge and techniques with all of us. My work, and skill, have definitely been enhanced by following your advice!

I m so glad I watched this. Ordered some pounce several years ago, but haven't gotten around to using it as that came with it was a can of white powder and a doughnut shape sponge on the top. That was it. Bought it at a craft store no directions at all.

Thank you Sarah! I tried doing a prick & pounce on black fabric with baby powder, but it rubbed off as you may guess. Next time I will have to go over it with a colored pencil. You provide such valuable information. Thank you!

This is a very clever transfer method. Can I use ground tailors chalk as the powder?
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 4 жыл бұрын
That should work Samantha, just make sure everything is dry as chalk can turn into a paste if it gets damp. Try it on something first...

Some say not to use pencil when tracing the design onto your tracing paper, as it may come through the design onto the fabric, which may be difficult to remove. Thanks for this tutorial video.

Is it necessary to use the yellow pencil after the deaign is transferred. Will it not stay for long (the dot marking). And we can just continue with the painting or embroidery?. Thank you for the tutorial.
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 6 жыл бұрын
The powder brushes off pretty easily (which is why it's a good technique to use!) so you will need to fix your lines with something if embroidering. You can use coloured pencils, specialist fabric transfer pens or watercolour paint (don't have this too watery!). If you are using it for a painting, depending on your technique you could go straight on.

When you connect the dots at the end, with the colored pencil, What type of pencil are you using (is it a wax based color pencil or oil based color pencil). Thanks :) I can't wait to try this method, everything else I have tried so far seems to fade the same day (or when I am working on my embroidery).
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 7 жыл бұрын
This one was a wax pencil, but most colouring pencils will work; just try it out on the edge of the fabric first. Ideally paint is the most durable way of connecting the dots and having a permanent design. Use a water colour paint from the tube in a similar colour to that which you want to stitch with. Use a brush with a good point and just water the paint down enough to let it travel over the fabric (too much water and it will bleed into the fabric then you will have to change your design!). Wipe the brush regularly as it will pick up the pounce powder and clog up the hairs. I also use a gel pen sometimes. Try some different methods out and find what works for you!

Hi, again, Sarah. I'm having a difficult time transferring phrases with accurate space between lines of lettering and the letters evenly spaced in the words. When I transfer (heat activated transfer pen on tracing paper) and then put the fabric in the hoop the lines and letters are distorted due to fitting the fabric tightly in the hoop. Any suggestions are welcome. Like I said the other day, you're the best! Thank you! 🙂

You need to join up the dots before you stitch, with a pen/pencil/paint (jump further along in the video to see me doing this) as yes the powder will come off if you don't

+Lucas Bookfield This is a common method used by artists throughout the ages; I believe Michael Angelo used it to transfer the design onto the roof of the Cistine Chapel. Sometimes other mediums are rubbed through the holes; I have seen them use indigo in Madeira...
