First reason was that I had to go to my carrier and get an e-sim bc I bought it unlocked at the Apple Store and he told me that if I mess it up, I have to bring it back to the store. Second reason was because I had to reset the phone twice because I had forgotten to back up my XR first. But once I learned how to use the phone, I LOVED IT!! hope this helps

I got my first iPhone a few years ago & just bought a replacement since the battery on the first one has downgraded & the charging port also needs servicing (or I’ll just sell it). Prior to this I’ve always had android phones & the process of transferring to a new phone was anxiety-inducing because something would ALWAYS go wrong- I would lose pictures, contacts, or data in the process, OR I’d end up talking to a customer service rep trying to get the new phone to recognize the new SIM card. And dont bother restarting it, it STILL wont work. In the end I had to manually install all the apps. But the photos and contacts werent a problem since I just airdropped them to my new iPhone. I think before anything, you should warn users that the new phone iOS should be up to date and the sims need to in inserted too (if keeping your number that sim needs to go into the new phone)....I didnt have either of these when I started the transfer which made it somewhat difficult.

Hi Alpher, sorry for the late reply. This should also work for the older models. If you have not enough space in your iCloud Apple will temporarily give you additional space, so all your data should be transferred.

Hi , sorry for the late reaction. Probably you have solved it by now. Give it some time, it can take a few hours seemingly stuck, but as long as there is movement, things happen and if there is a software update you will have to do that first. If not restart. These processes work flawlessly when they do, but this is not always the case. I once (which is atypical had to do the process three times)

You have to make sure that your new iphone is rested to factory settings, it means it cant pop up because you already set up your new iphone. You have to make sure you dont set it up before you transfer data, or if you did so sou have to go to settings and put your new iphone to factory settings

Question: After you do all of this in a transfer you physically swap the SIM cards to carry over your phone number (same provider)? I am going to trade in an older phone (8) and get a newer phone (15). BUT... at home I'm going to transfer my data from a 12 to the 15. THEN clear off the 12, transfer data from the 8 to the 12. Then wipe the 8. Transferring the number from the 12 to the 15 seems easy enough (eSIM). Then wiping the 12 to transfer data from the 8 to the 12 as per this video. After that, do I switch the physical SIM out of the 8 and put it in the 12? Then return the 8 to the provider, since they are giving me the trade-in value on the 8.
