This is great! I just got a new phone and everything transferred from my old phone but Google Messages. I wish I had found this prior to the 10 hours I spent watching videos and googling on how to restore the Google Message Files. Genius - Thanks you so so much for helping. Youngest child dropped their phone so been erasing my S21 to let them use, as I also have an S23 Ultra. Big thanks for this. It was the only thing that worked after days of frustration. I tried everything. I used Google backup. Didn't work. Pairing phones in Google Messages. Didn't work. Over wi-fi, cable, nothing. Smart Switch app. Didn't work because my new phone isn't a Samsung. The app can only switch from an old phone to a new Samsung. I even undid a week of work by factory resetting the new phone, backing up the old phone to Google backup, and restoring the new phone from that back up, which listed messages as part of the restore. But alas, they did not show up in Google Messages. This is the only method that worked. This is what Google backup should be doing.

Quick note-- bluetooth file transfer doesn't always work for large files (larger than 100 Mb). Any other method for transferring the .xml file also works as long as it ends up in the right place! Lovely video, thank you!!

Thanks for the video! I have seen many people ask about deleting the app itself which I see you say is fine to do which I figured, but I didn't see an answer to whether or not you it is ok to delete the sms file we created which is still stored in our documents folder. Can we delete that to free up more storage space? It's a little over 5gb for me so it would be nice to get rid of it as long as it doesn't have an effect on my message.

it really works. I tried getting my phone provider to transfer over my texts, and the service rep couldn't get it to work, but when I tried this, it did exactly like the video. if you have a lot of messages like i did, it will take maybe two hours to transfer everything over.

I use Textra for my messaging app not the default messaging app that came with the Android phone. Does it copy the Textra App as well? After I select SMS backup and restore as the default will I have the choice to change it to Textra? If I selected Phone log, will all my phone numbers and previous calls look the same as my old phone?

I'm doing this for a friend that had 166,500 messages. Some have started to come back. Do you think they will eventually start to pop back up over time? Does this carry over pictures sent within the texts too? The process took a while to back up and restore since they're was so many messages, but everything seemed to go as your video showed, didn't have any errors, so I feel like it worked, but I don't see all the texts yet. Was hoping they might start to come in as the days go by.
