I took my very first BJJ class yesterday. It was a no-gi session and this is the move I learned, without knowing the name at all. Thank you so much for this vid, I now have a better understanding of what I was doing yesterday!

Holy shit, grabbing the near wrist from bottom half as you sit up prevents them from being able to wrap your head, which is the biggest problem in MMA for bottom half guard players! Why hasn't anyone in MMA thought of that before? In MMA, the most common sequence in half guard is underhook -- sit up -- top player wraps a front headlock -- turtle or guillotine attempt. But before guys shoot the underhook, they should attain wrist control. Wow, I can't believe no one thought of such a simple solution.

I am studying butterfly guard at the moment. I see your head position, Adam Wardszynski, has his head on the opposite side.
@MMALeech4 ай бұрын
Head positioning will vary on the near or far shoulder according to what you are looking for, and it will lead you to different paths. It is also dependent on whether you are using an underhook or overhook. You can't have your head on the far shoulder if you are using an overhook for example. Here's a video of some pros and cons of both: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHOziXiVetSVn5Ysi=P4xdsZ6A5W4CFcHv

Interesting, I was taught to scoot around and keep head on near shoulder to avoid guillotine.

At 3:04 you say always controling the wrist, but.. wouldn't you prefer to be on your hand as a base and not your elbow?
@MMALeech4 жыл бұрын
If you are on your hand you can't control his wrist, thus can't prevent him from wrapping your neck into headlocks, guillotines etc... you can get your base by leaning into him instead, as explained at 2:18. I'm not saying that posting on your hand is wrong and won't work, but I believe it's riskier, especially if you are going against guys who love to wrap your neck.

@Stephen Thacker going to butterfly is a good option when you can't knee tap or go to your knees when trying the half-guard sweep, especially against good wrestlers.

What makes this work is body position, his hip is back similar to how people play seated butterfly with no grips.
