Hello Andrew. Just discovered you and subscribed. I’m 65 and just weeks ago accomplished my first muscle-up. I had been working on it for 3 years but was beset with injuries to my elbows - my fault for being impatient! Triumphant as I was, it was achieved with an excessive swing. The most reps I’ve managed is 3 (which I’m proud of, considering my age), but I realise it’s that damn transition that holds me back! I don’t want to keep struggling with having to swing to produce momentum to propel me above the bar, with resulting poor form - even though Ive managed to avoid ever having to do the dreaded “chicken wing!” I’ve been searching for a specific way of working on the transition and your “hustle-up” seems to be the ideal solution. I can’t wait to try it out tomorrow! I believe if I select the correct band, I can adopt a method of training ‘specificity’ that will enable me to fully develop the transition for reps and sets without having to go through the whole range of motion (with feet placed in the band). I will still do low rep sets full rom with the thinnest band - maybe just 3 reps per set, but can now spend more time on grinding out reps focussing on the transition phase to build strength in this difficult area. Your idea sounds great. Thanks very much! Really enjoy your approach and ideas, which seem fresh and somewhat different to most callisthenics content out there. Please keep the content coming! By the way, also enjoy your handstand content too. Helpful, even though I’ve got a pretty solid away from the wall hs for 30 seconds. Your tutorial about kicking up was particularly helpful. Bryan 😊

@@CaliToTheCrowd thanks for taking the time to check in! I couldn't get high enough above the bar to start a dip, I'm only getting my chin over, not chest to bar. I guess I just need to keep practicing. It's so frustrating!

Brother i'm exited you give me another direction i didn't thought. I'm stuck in the muscle up transition and i will try it. Huscle up. What intensity of resistance band you work for it i have the 18-36 kg resistance band is it enough?💪💪💪

Yeah the muscle up is a tricky movement pattern, so anything we can do to make our bodies understand it better is a good thing =] I usually use a light resistance band - I think mine is labelled 25KG. But it will depend on your bodyweight too. I would just advise, use a band that is not too difficult at first, then up the intensity =]

Just starting to get back into fitness (4 and a bit months off), sitting down all day from COVID has a) ruined my deadhang grip b) ive lost all ab strength Never struggled with banging out 15 pull ups or skin the cat... now i'm on 5 pull ups and super tucked skin the cat negative to try and get it back -.- Fallen a lot further than i thought was possible.... I switch it up between ring support hold, dips, skin the cat (negative - seems ridiculous that i have to do this but its working), deadhang (recently), pull ups (both ring and bar) and ring rows to try and get it back.. everything's improving really other than the pull up but think my grip is giving out on a 38mm bar quicker than my back! @mishawolo stay tuned

Ahhh that sucks! Without sounding patronising though, it sounds like you have identified a huge opportunity. Most of the best growth comes from working on the basics, so you'll probably find that you come back a lot stronger =]

Can I ask what brand of bands are those? When I tried to do the hustle up with my band, it doesnt seem long enough 😅

Yeah you can do them on rings! If you're finding these difficult, try working on standard pull ups and dips untill you are VERY comfortable doing those, then work towards the Hustle up as an accessory exercise =]

The main goal is this exercise is to get strong enough to do the transition. As STRENGTH is the goal, I would recommend anywher between 3-6 really controlled reps =]

Great video Andrew!! LOVE the name you have given this excersice "The Hustle Up" 👌🏼! What do you find easier the band assisted Muscle Up or the Hustle Up? Also do you need to be able to do a hanging L-Sit to do the Hustle Up? 😁

Great question... hmm... to be honest, it depends. if you have decent hamstring flexibility, the hustle up is definitely easier but if you chose a decent band the resistance band assisted muscle up is the easier to do. Also you don't need to be able to do a hanging l-sit, because the band supports part of the weight of your legs, but it is A LOT easier if you have decent hamstring flexibility =]
