We do about eight or ten trap outs a year. The most challenging part is dealing with the property owner. When the bees start piling up outside the tree or whatever you are trapping them out of people get a little freaked out.

This colony is a real mixture of different bees! After 7:30 you can see yellow, black and grey ones. Their queen obviously wasn't too fussy with her choice of mates!

Using drawn out comb isn't a necessity but I would use it if I had extra. This trap has some drawn comb in it. I'll show what I have in there when I have the bees out of the tree. I'll also show the set back I had with this one.

I would like to see what would happen if the exit point took the bee's into the new bee hive and then the bee's could come & go from the new hive as they please. The tree hive would still need the one way flow out of the tree...but into the new hive. The difference is the bee's are automatically going into their new hive...and becoming familiar with it, thru the one way check valve. Perhaps sometime in the future you will try this method. Thanks for the video.
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 5 жыл бұрын
Running the exit into a hive box is something a lot of people suggest but it doesn’t matter where the exit is. They will alway try to return to the entrance location they were familiar with before the trap box was placed. It just takes a little patience and the ones who are trapped out eventually give up on going home and start working the box.

Randy, how long did this trapout take you? I've been working a trapout now, here in Florida, for four plus weeks. I've given them frames of honey and nectar, fresh eggs, with hopes of them developing a queen and things are looking great, but the queen has yet to leave the tree. I've smoked the spayed bee quick around the entrance, but still no queen. Even pumped smoke into the opening. I've been telling her that there are better accommodations outside the tree, but she keeps blowing me off. Still very optimistic that I'll be done soon. 😎🐝🐝🐝

@628DirtRooster 5 жыл бұрын
If you're sure they are completely trapped out with no way back in and no queen has come out she is most likely dead. I'm typically done with a trap out in two to three weeks. The one thing I never add is frames of honey. That can cause set backs due to robbing especially if there is no flow going on. If there are plenty of bees in the box and they are working your box I'd stick a frame of young larvae and eggs in (honey ring around brood is OK) and if they aren't drawing queen cells inside of a day then chances are you have a queen in the box. I'd also sit and observe the trap cone for a while and if no bees come out after about ten minutes or so of observation I'd probably call it done.

@628DirtRooster

When they return to the hive they are trying to enter the tree, building or whatever at the point they remember (where they were oriented to). When they get back and the screen is up it's confusing to them. They won't back up and evaluate the overall situation to see what has changed and how to get around it. They just keep trying to get back to the place they remember and now the scent of the hive is keeping them focused on where to go as well. This is how I like to explain it: It would be like if you came home and someone had put a fence across your whole front yard with a gate down at the corner and you stuck your face up against the fence where you normally walk to try and find a way in. LOL

Would you put a new queen in a queen cage in the hive box? The one in the tree might be impossible to get out. This procedure is really good to know. Thanks
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 9 жыл бұрын
No, the queen will eventually come out and when she does you want her to be accepted. If you've already given them another queen they won't take her back. Sometimes for whatever reason she doesn't make it through the process. We'll watch for long enough to be sure there is no more activity inside the tree and still can't find the queen in the box. We requeen those when we get them home.

Never seen this before. If you do this for a house doesn't that create issue leaving the honey behind?
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 10 жыл бұрын
You're right. Old comb left in the walls attracts ants, roaches, mice and other pests but some people just refuse to let you pull off a few pieces of siding or cut out a little bit of sheetrock. These same folks usually drive you nuts with phone calls after the trap is set up. They call two hours after you leave to complain about all the bees on the outside of their house. It sounds funny but they're really annoying to deal with.

could you conne t the cone to the new hive thereby force ng the bees to go through it to get out and introducing them into it. or would this just then be a longer trek for them to get in and out of the tree? just curious. you guys do great work saving the bees, ignore the idiotic posts...
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
+Doc Bartley You can direct the cone into the box but its their return flight you're concerned with. Doesn't really matter where they depart from. They try to return to the entrance they know and when that is block they go by scent so they will just go around the box when they come back until they give up and start looking for a new place to live.

Just a shot in the dark. You know any beeks in Northern MS who would be interested in a bee trap out? Fiance's uncle is renting a place with a strong colony in a tree that's eating his lunch when he mows. Entrance is about 2 ft off the ground. Should be easy to work. Sent a message to Tim Durham asking if he knows anyone in the area but I've not got a reply. He said they were vicious. I walked up to within a couple of feet of the entrance. They were just pissed from the lawn mower vibration and him throwing grass all over the entrance. I'd do it but I'm 3 1/2 hours north.

Trap outs are pretty much a waste of time. You don't' get the comb, larva, capped brood, nectar, pollen or honey. As you showed most of the time the bees find another way in and coming back day after day is a huge waste of time. So what do you get for all your trouble? If you have some brood comb and empty comb, you might get the bees to go into the trap box. In four or five weeks you could get most of the bees. All in all it's a waste of time.
