I just came back home from a solo trip to an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana, DR. Hands down, it was one of the best solo traveling experiences I’ve had - and I’ve been to a number of countries and cities alone. And I was there by myself at the height of Valentine’s Day surrounded by couples, but felt no sense of exclusion at all. Book those trips, ladies! You’ll be so proud of yourself and happy that you made the leap. 😊❤

I needed to read this right now! I'm 54 and married for 30 years, but lately, I'm feeling the need to travel the world all by myself just to find myself. I've always been that culturally misogynistic "Captain save em", so I've always placed myself on the back burner. That has not only burnt me out, but it's induced a desire within me to just do me for the rest of my life! I refuse to be another cultural casualty as a woman. It's something I've always wanted to do, but being a black female, I've been afraid because the stigmatism of being black in America can be transposed onto what you think the rest of the world thinks of you, too. Not allowing that nonsense to stop me any longer. I'm going to get my passport picture taken today. I had that planned BEFORE this video showed up in my feed. Synchronicity and confirmation are real. We don't chase. We attract, hence this video showing up when I've been cultivating the feeling of wanting to travel for a little minute now. ✊🏾👍🏾✌🏾💕 It has to be a step one to move myself out of this house and across the seas...

"Don't act like prey." -Adalia I tell people something similar to this when solo traveling. People often look like a mark and very unsure. I remember several times when meeting an online friend in their countries at bus stations and then commenting on his I looked and moved like a local. Like you said, pay attention to how locals do everyday things like get a taxi, buy groceries, walk in public, etc.

I've traveled solo for the last several years. I'm an introvert and not really close to people not even family. I find European culture with his knowledge of ancient history and dinner conversations that last for hours about science, politics, history to be more engaging than American obsession with celebrity and Instagram. I enjoy the Carribean for its slow, laid back pace to life. America is in decline. The culture starts to decline before the country does. The only reason I have been hanging on is to reach retirement age and my elderly parents. This country has changed so much that I sometimes just don't recognize it. It's become a country of extremes. When I first traveled solo, I was a little apprehensive about what to expect. I went to Spain/Italy for the summer and I loved it. Europe is safer than the US, ladies. And the men much more respectful of women. Just wherever you go, keep in mind that you are representing black women and carry yourself with respect and respect others.

Watching the replay. Took my first solo trip at 30 to Puerto Rico. Planned trips for each day so I wasn’t just sitting on the beach alone. Last solo trip was a cruise from Venice to Greece. Can’t tell you how many women (all ethnicities and ages) came up to me looking so excited asking “what’s it like to be free”.

A lot of the looks I get are a cross between respect/admiration and pity. I just let it roll off me as I sip my glass of wine watching the waves roll in on the beach as the wind caresses my neck. It's a spiritual thing and some people just don't get it.

When I travel to a new country I try to arrive during the day time, I do a walking tour of the city or neighbourhood to get my bearings snd I go to a tourist office for maps and info and find out about interesting sites, transport options, safety issues etc.
@gnic09
@gnic09 Жыл бұрын
The official tourism websites of a country usually provide the best and most current info for travel to that country. Check them to see if the tourist accommodation is licensed and therefore should meet at least minimum standards before you book. You can also contact them to check if it's not listed.

I’m watching the replay since it started when I was in class. So many great points as usual! On policing people’s activities abroad, I eat fast food like McDonald’s only in places such as the Middle East because it’s halal, and I can trust that I’m eating what I ordered and that it isn’t cross-contaminated by pork products. When I went to Mexico City for the first time, I stayed for three weeks as a local and loved it. My only friend who is bilingual confused departure dates with me and flew back while I still had a week remaining. My brain quickly adapted. I woke up dreaming and thinking in Spanish. Locals approached me after staring in curiosity to ask in Spanish, why I came to Mexico as an American. Didn’t I hear all the horrible things they say about them on the news? They were so elated to know that I wanted to form my own narrative by seeing for myself. They were so hospitable. My first solo trip and a lovely experience. I will be returning. I want to reside there for some time and just dwell in tranquility.

Watching the replay and I truly enjoyed this topic. I solo traveled to my first international country in 2019 and my family were so scared but I had faith that all would be fine and it definitely was. I plan on going on a scouting trip to Panama 🇵🇦 solo the next time I go back there. Blessings! 😊

I have been traveling since age 20, and I am now 80,living in Queretaro, since 2021. I never had a prolem solo, with husband, and our only daughter at 37. Please pay to have your home and apartment emptied, and do not carry all that stuff to your new home. It is dangerous to try and sell your stuff.

I just came back from my first solo trip to Portugal and Spain for a week. I had quite a few family and friends who expressed their concern, but I told them "Y'all do know that these countries are viewed as much safer than the US, right?". I fear going down the street to the store, but was fully comfortable traveling these countries. You said it right when you say to do the research on your own!

Great tip about pivoting if you are not comfortable. I've had some trips where I wish I would have pivoted, but didn't. One was in DC. I was staying in China Town and I was being harassed on the streets (catcalling) to the point where I ended up staying in my hotel room b/c I didn't want to deal w/ it anymore. In retrospect I should have changed hotels to quieter area. Another one was I did 10 days in Rome solo. It was overwhelming for me after a while trying to navigate. I should have pivoted that time too. I am taking this tip with me on all future trips. If it ain't working for me...pivot! Happy travels!

Watching the replay. I might "feel a way" traveling to Nigeria alone. My "Black American" friend who has lived there for years and is married to a Nigerian says they "would put ketchup on me and eat me." She seems to believe I may be kidnapped from Lagos and sold for my body parts (hands, skull). LoL! She swears I need to travel with someone who is actually from there and/or lives there. Hmmm

But I am going to get on that plane! and on top of going I have only flown once in my life. I know I’m making up more anxiety in my head than I need to. So many emotions. I’m conquering my fears. I have been traveling since I was 14 Got that bug and as an adult have been traveling with my son who's disabled - it also helps to have family around the world- I would love to move abroad, having moved to the US from the Caribbean in my late teens.. Its somewhat difficult since my son who has cerebral palsy has now been accepted to college and I am his only support- my ex-husband has pretty much bailed! I would love traveling with other like minded women to get those needed breaks along the way!

Make the leap. Just do a weekend domestic get away first. Do a couple of those first. Most people aren't going to take note of you because they will be too much into their smart phones. You meet people when you travel. Especially other solo travel. I've had black families see me traveling solo and tried to pull me into their group. Every trip will have a different experience.
