How to Travel the World on a Budget

Tips for traveling the world CHEAP! I've traveled to every country by 21 years old and I'm completely self funded. I started working at my family's travel agency when I was 15 and I've been able to learn a lot about travel hacking and how to travel on a budget.
Thinking about how to afford to travel can be overwhelming if you think about it as one big price tag. Its helpful to break it up- Flights, Accommodation, Food, etc. Destination also matters a lot when you’re on a budget, so if you’re on a tight budget make sure to travel to the cheapest destinations in the world which are just as amazing as anywhere else including South East Asia, Central America and similar.
When you fly, travel during off seasons when there won’t be as many tourists and also travel during holidays- flying on thanksgiving, New Years or Christmas will save you so much money!
On the topic of credit cards: There are so many travel rewards programs! One of the best things you can do right now to start traveling the world is to never use your debit card again. Every time you use your credit card, you could be collecting points and miles that fund your next vacation. I can’t remember the last time I used real money to purchase a long haul flight which as you guys probably know is usually the most expensive part of a trip. Basically you can use airline miles for plane tickets and hotel points for free hotel stays. This is the beginning of a very long, in depth conversation that I’m really excited to tell you more about because its genuinely changed my life but I’m going to save that for another time so make sure to subscribe to see more of that.
Another great tip for saving money while traveling, especially if you are not in a rush is to avoid flights as much as possible. Bus tickets and local train passes can get you across countries for a fraction of the cost and it’s a great way to see as much of the country as possible out the window.
Overall, be aware of how you spend money in your daily life. Skip the lattes and the new clothes because these costs really start to add up. I don’t buy material possessions very often! If I do, they’re typically very small so I save money and use it on experiences instead.
I hope this information was helpful! There will be more videos about budget travel in the future!

Great tips, Lexie! I started traveling as a teenager by saving all my money and not spending on things that my friends were buying like clothes, going out, etc. I've since been to 62 countries. 😎 My top money-saving travel tip is to slow travel and live like a local in each place you go instead of spending like you're on holiday. Congrats again on traveling to every country in the world!

Good idea in theory but doing a video on all 200 countries is a bitttt unrealistic. especially when u have to take editing, fact-checking, etc into play and then recording 200 videos...And then she knows countries like Tajikistan will not get as many views as here experience in let's say India

I've been a digital nomad for 2 years now. I'd also add: carrying meal containers and doing meal prep is huge: ~$50 per week for all meals. The other is avoid touristy experiences and live like a local enjoying small cheap frequent more local pleasures such as unique appetizers, drinks, classes, etc. Happy travels!

Thank you for the video! I really like the fact that there are great ways to travel the world without having to spend a lot of money. For example, street food is an amazing way to eat local, delicious food while spending little! I remember visiting Vienna a couple years back, and the street food was my favorite there! For working while traveling, I know a friend of mine used Workaway to live temporarily in a place by working and getting to travel around.

Quality tips. I would also include that getting data for one's phone is significantly less expensive in other countries. Where I'll spend at least $50/month in USA, my data packages have been $12/month in Hong Kong, $15/month in Mexico, and about $13/month in Colombia, list as a few examples.

Great video. $2.75 per night at a hostel in Siem Reap, Cambodia, back in December. There were even cheeper ones than that. I guess it was off season, plus we had never seen so many hostels in one city. We were in a 12 person dorm room with A/C, two bathrooms in the room, and the hostel had a nice swimming pool. Great staff, too. :-)

There are also services that will email alerts when flights out of your selected airport to various destinations around the world have dropped to very low prices. Sometimes these are mistake fares, and they have to be booked right away, so it requires some quick decision making, and the ability to then get the time off work. I just lucked into a great deal to Italy. 4 days after I booked the exact same flight was twice as much! (though I used points for a FREE flight!). For lodging, though, I personally have no desire to stay in a hostel! I have a hard enough time sleeping with others in the room, let alone complete strangers! I'm an introvert and I like my privacy, so to me it's worth paying more for a hotel room, even if that means a bit less travel. Sleeping in your car is another option (they make backseat air mattresses), and I did this for an entire week in Oregon last summer!
