Hey Lauren. I see a fair number of posts commenting on your looks and splaining something irrelevant to you. I just wanted to chime in and say you're doing amazing work. These videos are really helpful and you are a great instructor. Thanks for making these and putting them out there to learn along with. I think you're the best guitar instructor I've come across on KZbin. Thanks so much for what you do. For all the rest of the unhelpful comments, I'm sorry you are getting those. I hope you can tune them out and keep being awesome.

There’s nothing wrong with your looks or charm, Lauren. Or your choice of a partner. And you are a good teacher on top of that. I did purchase your finger picking course already and I am appreciating it. Huge hugs from Oslo, from a Turkish/Norwegian guitar enthusiast who used to live in the Boston area 😊

OMG! An absolute epiphany! Strings 6 & 4 on 6-string chords (G, Em, etc.), and strings 5 & 4 on 5-string chords (C, Am, etc.). So simple, so fundamental, and yet so entirely ABSENT, from most online instructions on the Travis Picking technique. Thank you for that seemingly trivial, yet incredibly meaningful, little tidbit!

I picked my guitar up again today and was trying to find some beginner finger picking tutorials when I came across this video. This is so helpful, thank you so much! You are one of the few teachers out there who seems to remember what it’s like to be a beginner, and I really appreciate that. I have a couple of questions, if that’s okay: 1. I can do the picking well enough, but I find that my hand and arm get very sore very quickly. If there anything I can do about that? 2. Would you recommend anchoring when doing this? There seems to be disagreement about this among guitar teachers, so I was wondering what you think. I find that it helps, but I don’t want potentially to pick up a bad habit that could limit my progress in the future. Thanks again for all your work!
@LaurenBateman

Thank you. The soreness is likely from tension. The finger anchor is a preference. I like it but I know my classical teacher did not like me doing it.

Hi Lauren! I don't know if you remember me. A few year ago I told you that my guitar instructor is Brian May (not from Queen). I have watched a lot of your videos and you are an awesome instructor. By the way Studio Arts here in St. Thomas Ontario is short of music instructors if you ever move to St. Thomas Ontario Canada I highly recommend you to help Brian at Studio Arts. Anyways I will try to keep this short but last August Studio Arts was having a 3 day music fest at Pinafore park. Brian informed me about and he gave me the schedule of what was happening when. When I saw that the guitar session for students was on Saturday I saw on my work schedule I can't make it but I also saw that on Friday night Studio Arts sponsored a guy that did a tribute concert to my favorite Canadian Stompin Tom Connors but before that Brian was schedule to perform with his band. I told Brian I can't make it on Saturday but I am coming Friday. He told me to bring my guitar. I came Friday with my guitar and people that I was sitting with in the audience asked when I am going to perform. I said I don't know. Brian set up with his band at 5p.m. and then said "Ruth come up on stage and bring your guitar." I was not expecting that and I was a little nervous because I have never played with a band before. We did Margaritaville and people were up dancing. That sure boosted my confidence. I will post another comment about the guy that did the tribute to Stompin Tom he is a good guitar player but bad instructor. Love your fingerpicking.

@@LaurenBateman Yes I am still playing. I am not quiting. I mentioned in my comment about seeing that guy that did a tribute to my favorite Canadian Stompin Tom. This guy Jeff offered to teach me guitar for less than what Studio Arts was charging. I was interested in seeing how he can teach me but I also knew I am not quiting Studio Arts. This guy Jeff he plays guitar great but he is the worst guitar instructor ever. When he first saw me he said I want to hear where you're at which I understand. I played Pretty Woman for him which I did make a mistake but he said you are far more advanced then a beginner. The song he said he was going to teach me was Wìldwood Flower (Stompin Tom's version.) I had trouble with the way he was teaching me plus he made a mistake with the way he told me to practice it and he realized the mistake but he also told me to not come back until I perfected the song. What kind of a teacher is that? To me a guitar instructor helps you through the struggles like if you are having a problem with a particular chord change. For example for a long time I had a problem with Folsom Prison Blues because of the b7 chord. I was practicing that song for about a year. My instructor Brian at Studio Arts did not tell me not to come back until I perfected that song we focused on other things but I kept practicing Folsom Prison. A week ago when I went to see Brian I said I am going to play Folsom Prison. He said o.k I will sing you play. At the end he said "Ruth you can play that with a band." I said o.k let's do Pretty Woman again he sang I played. He again said you can play that with a band. Then he said Ruth I am going to print something off for you which I know you can do. It is the guitar for Tennessee Flat Top Box. I impressed him with that on Friday although the hammer on was hard to do. He said Roseanne Cash would be proud of you. I saw one of your videos about bad guitar instructors and Jeff falls into that category

Hi Lauren! Just letting you know something. This past Saturday I went to see my guitar instructor Brian and his wife perform with their band. They were doing a music fest for 4 hours. The place was packed. When I got there at 7p.m. I was asked at the entrance if I wanted to purchase a ticket to win a ukelele. I said no I don't play ukelele. I found out later that the money raised from those tickets for the ukelele is used to pay for music lessons for people that have fallen on hard times and can no longer afford lessons. I felt so bad then that I didn't buy a ticket. I made up for it yesterday and made my guitar instructors son Brendan get very emotional. Brendan was working at the front desk of Studio Arts yesterday. I took $1000.00 out of my purse and said this is for your music Angel's charity which pays for lessons for people that can no longer afford it. He was so overcome and said Ruth you have a kind heart. This will pay for a lot of music lessons.I told him Studio Arts has done a lot for me. Music brings happiness into people's lives, it helps fight depression and nobody should stop music lessons because they could no longer afford it because of bad circumstances.

I wish there was a way that I can send a video of Brian May and I playing Margarittaville. The video that was done I was just over a year in my guitar playing. You teach the same way that Brian does. Brian at the time that video was done was encouraging me. He told me professional musicians make mistakes on stage but you just keep going. I wish I can share that video with you. My musician friend when he saw that video said I played it better than his musician friends.

I'm back with your video. A great one. Ok I got the basics of that. I play "Dust In The Wind". The C chord starts AB pinched together. No A D alternate. Each song apart from alternate bassline and next string according to each chord as you showed, the other fingers/strings vary in each different song ("Landslide" which i play as well). How to "guess" the strings played when you have no tab (working on a song with just chords, no travis picking explanation). By ear? Thanks Lauren for everything!🎶🎶🎶

Lauren, I've played guitar off and on since I was 15. That's 59 years. I've spent much of my life in Tennessee and N.C. where guitars are as common as grass, exposed to this all my life. I've sat on Doc Watson's porch on Wildcat Road and listened and watched as he played. I have envied my "Travis pickin" friends all those decades, until I heard you teach how to do this. Something finally clicked. I'm going to order a Personalized License Plate for my car that reads TT1T2T1 in your honor. So I have one question, and I'll have to ask my wife first, but if she says it's okay, will you marry me? That's just to let you know that "Thumb One" Loves You. Thanx.
