I'm 31 and don't know how to swim! I've never been able to float really, and I've had a few scary near-drowning experiences that have made me never care to learn. But this week I've randomly felt like I want to learn, so I might try this summer!

Good luck with that! Be patient and take your time! Let me know if you need any help

I was the exact same! I started beginner lessons 3 weeks ago, 30 mins on a Sunday morning and now I can swim (not well but I'm comfortable:))

I just started going to the pool last week to get a different type of exercise, and have been treading water just for a minute at a time with other stuff in between, because I realised I am sorely lacking in that area. (with plans to increase the time gradually). I'm an opera singer and with that I learned how to exhale slowly and controlled while keeping my ribcage still open and keeping air inside - it was a thing I was taught too, always make sure there is air still there. So I have been doing that (like what you mentioned in the video), and it keeps me afloat but it's still incredibly hard work, so tonight I decided to look up how to do it better and came across your video. found a few things already that now make sense about why I am finding it so hard. Looking forward to trying some of the things in the video next time I go and comparing! thank you!!

good tips, esp window wiping action of elbow instead of moving entire arm to save energy. do you have any videos/tips on treading without using arms?

Amazing video Dan! It's so great that you share your love for swimming, it is such an amazing water sport and it's lovely to see you enjoy it, keep going with these great videos. If it doesn't bother you, I'd like to give you a suggestion, a tip for the next videos: Basically, you could try inserting some comic and funny stuff... to give everyone a pinch of humor that, in the world of swimming, diving and all water activities, can never be missing. Now, I don't think much of it, but the first thing I could think of in your sport might be peeing in the water. Once, my uncle, who is a scuba diver, peed in his wetsuit during a long diving session and that moment was absolutely funny, he even wrote "I’m peeing" on a waterproof notebook during the session. He has always been telling me that there are 2 types of divers and swimmers: those who pee in the water and those who lie. I know it may sound strange as a request but, in my opinion, these are moments of happiness and carefree that always make everyone smile. I hope you like the idea and I hope you have a wonderful day!

That made me smile 😀 Thank you for your input

@@danswimnyc Oh don't worry, I'm really sorry if the suggestion sounded weird or embarassing for you. It’s just that this is a topic about swimming that not everyone wanna talk about or show but, in my opinion, it deserves the same attention.

He says "treading water takes a lot of energy at first keep practicing and you'll get better over time." Of damn it Dan you should have opened with that. Everyone always says that treading is a way to stay up using less energy, the point of treading is using less energy, it's easy to do and you won't get tired. We are over here thinking we are doing it wrong because we are using a lot of energy. We are watching your video and thinking we must be crazy because what you are doing doesn't make sense. Please start your video with "treading is a way to use little energy to stay afloat, but it will probably take a lot of energy when you first start out before practice kicks in."

Bro i am able to tread water using your technique but the problem is im just under the surface of the water like 2:10, can’t get my head above water any tips?
@danswimnyc Жыл бұрын
Did you try leaning back more? Consider sculling faster and shorter with your arm deeper under the water (hips level)

@danswimnyc2 ай бұрын
You should start with Small Baby Steps. Learn to flow learn to do that on the shallow end of the pool. it’s gonna take a while then you can slowly transition to the deep parts of the pool, but you have to be slow and methodical.

Beginner here. I am. I dont know why they dont teach you to float ,instead direct paddling
@AmalAuma9 күн бұрын
Exactly! No one has ever taught me how to float (although I know how to - self taught) I feel that’s the INTEGRAL part of learning to swim. Once you can float well, it builds all your confidence & let’s you know you have some control over the water
