How to treat a koi pond Ammonia spike

Been experiencing exactly the same issue with the Pondlab 200 Ammonia test. Just would not come down from 0.5+. Thought oh no somethings gone wrong maybe with top up water chlorinator. Dropped feeding down to tiny amount and no change. Nitrite and nitrate both zero so thought something was up. Tested tap water, the same 0.5+ then tested RODI water with 000ppm TDS so totally striped pure H2O and surprise surprise the same 0.5+ result! Called NTL UK who are being very helpful. Clearly a duff test set for ammonia. Not good that this has happened to either of us. Beautiful pond by the way in gorgeous Devon. Used to live in there some years ago. Thanks for the videos. This entire episode stressed me right out mate but they was helpful after calling them and sorted it to my satisfaction. It just put me into a head banger for 3 days cause you don't think to test the test kit

Glad to hear that there was nothing wrong with your pond. That is the main reason I don’t rely on any kits or use them when my pond does not give me any reason that there may be something wrong. I only test if they are showing that they may be something wrong. But I have not tested the water for this season. But I make sure to be consistent with my maintenance.

Sorry Michael you tube cut the audio as there was some music playing in the back ground on parts of the video they are nice people like that. It was of no odd's to any one a non track that one a thousand mite be able to tell you what it was so it was leave it like that or take it off. Yes the test kit was duff they had a batch of them at the time Nt Lab's sorted it to my satisfaction at the time and I still use there test kits and have for the past 15 years

I am in the middle of the same pondageddon, lost a few fish and having followed the normal protocols. Water changes not being effective by much. very high ammonia being suspect. My pond is a 5 year old and has been very stable. NO changes on my end.

Hi Benjamin if you are sure the tests are right by testing the kit on bottled water and tap water then keep at the tater changes try 1/4 of the pond to a time you have to change alot of water to get a good drop on the tests there is a product called Blagdon Ammonia Remover it works and will bring down the Ammonia levers but its only a stop gap and they will rise back up over about a week if you dont keep changing out water. This time of year filters are only just starting to grow the bio in them and each year your fish get bigger and you need more bio/filter to handle the fish load so very little food if you dont have the bio to match till it grows. hope you sort it soon.

Sorry it was youtube said it had a licensed music track and they cut the sound so it was leave it as is now or take it off. you cant replace it they don't let you do that. The water was fine in the end it was a duff test kit they had a batch of them

Kevin i was quite surprised the how fast South West Water helped me out a man came round the day I called said there will not be ammonia in the tap water tested it on the spot with his gear watched as I tested with my kit looked a little worried over what my kit was showing took some tap water and pond water with him said he would test it back at the works as well. he gave me a ring some hours later said tap water was ok and a quick test on the pond water was ok but he would run a full lab test on both samples and it would take a week. week later I got a full written report on the tap water and pond water both saying good and a note from the chap at the lab saying that the pond water was bloody excellent for fish

Problem I have found also is most test kits cant test properly on the ammonia what I have found is ammonium which is less harm full is added to the total including ammonium and ammonia so be mind full of this ,, plus check your PH level as this will have a change if ammonia is high

This is what was getting me with this the kit put up a reading of near 0.1 on what ever water you tested. the nice man from the water board has called and has a full lab report on the tap water and pond water with exact levels its in the post to me he said the fish was lucky to have water that good and it was some of the best pond water he has ever seen so will update the video when I have the report

I'm fingers crossed when I get the full lab report it will tell me what my tests show with the pond Nitrate/phosphate lower than the tap water then I know in right with the veg filter

Mate I have nitrate spike issues since early in the week and dispite changing large quantities of water and new pond start etc I can't shift the level. My test kit is probably a year or so old so it's a good prompt to get a new one. I suspect mine is me overfeeding on a new pond but worth a check, as you say it's stressful to try and tackle something like a spike.

Dan this was a head banging nightmare you trust what the kits tell you I think I get through 3-4 kits a year and always get a new one a few weeks after starting the one I have. Just cheque the test if it shows high up against a 2nd source then you know the problem is real

So if in doubt on a positive test it could be your test kit so test water from a defiant source before acting

I guess it was the nt labs kit was at fault, I've just opened a new one myself so I'm hopeful it's an isolated incident but you never know. Would you mind giving me the batch number/date so I can see if it's the same as mine. Whenever I'm in any doubt I take a sample to my local koi shop just to confirm as its peace of mind. Great video as always 👍 (shame about the circumstances, but it may help someone else.

@@Tom_Prendiville Mate I don't want to say to much on the test kit as yet to hear back from them and have not had a problem like this in all the years of using them it was only the Ammonia test that just read the same what ever you tested just try yours on a 2nd water source of water if its showing a problem. Water board chap has called me and said test show no Ammonia in the tap water and the pond had 0.04 Ammonia so well ok. to what the test kit saying 0.5 - 0.1 he's going to post the full report tap and pond to me and said the pond water was some of the best tests he had ever seen on a water body

DevonKoi Pond mate I had exactly the same issue and I was using nt labs test kit! I checked and changed to api and had no issue. I think I’m going to stay away from nt labs test kits from now on as I recognise that test tube at fault in your vids haha! Happy ponding mate

I gave up taking readings as this happened to me after years of seeing no changes apart from Nitrates. Tap water quite high in Nitrates !! Dealer checked sample and clear so i GAVE UP testing. Best indication is to watch koi behaviour i think.

Not yet chris still in Email sending game with them but It wont stop me using the same test kits or any pond/fish gear from them I have been using there stuff for over ten years without problem. the test kit set needs posting back to them and so on after that they seem happy to replace with a new set and now that I have calmed down I will be happy with that and an admission the test kit is faulty

What can I say mate its a lesson well learned we get to trust the test kits to much really if it shows a problem then re test along with a tap or bottled water sample. If you could tip a mention in your next video to this Video so the more people hear about a posable problem with the [wont say there name you know who test kits] as I don't want anyone to go through the Hassell I have had this week you get a very larger view count and people are opening this batch of test kits now so could save a lot of Hassell for someone. I'm taking to the test kit makers by Email and they have shown grate concern and I will up date this video as soon as I'm updated by them.

The nitrite test dropper from each kit the liquid is a different colour in both bottles. The one given me higher reading is definitely a darker substance as I’ve dropped them both on paper and you can physically see I don’t no which one is correct annoying because they are not cheap Probably need a third kit to confirm crazy I think

Hi mate I’m having nitrite issues in my pond. Using the pond lab 200 test kits So I’ve purchased another identical test kit pond lab 200 The test results are different on both kits consistently Not good at all

Ok what was happening with the kit I had was a constant reading of near 0.10 on any sample of water I tested for Ammonia with the said kit even bottled water and water right from the tap all read the same. After contacting them I sent the kit back and yes they admitted it was faulty but had checked the sample they held from the same batch and that was ok. I have used there test kits for years and never had a problem so will continue use them. But admit my trust in the tests will take some time to restore so test the tap water as a base each time for now Martyn

If your ammonia is high change out some water is the first thing to do about 25% of it and stop feeding for 2 - 3 days till it falls

I don't suppose it was a test kit that starts with an N and ends with labs by any chance, i have a similar issue with mine at the moment, apparently my pond, my tap water and a fresh bottle of volvic water all have 0.25mg/l of ammonia at the moment. Definitely considering moving over to a Hanna digital tester, yeah it costs more but keeping a pond healthy is hard enough so could do without a £10 test kit telling BS results.
