‎ What is the quarantine medication trio, and when should you use it? The quarantine med trio is a set of broad-spectrum fish medicines that treat for bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. Our rule of thumb is to use it to prophylactically treat new fish that come into our store so they won't get the rest of our fish sick. However, if we see the new fish already have a specific type of disease, we only use the medicine that treats that specific illness. Also, if we got the fish from a trusted source, then we will wait and observe their behavior and feeding habits. If they are healthy, we might deworm them twice (waiting 2 weeks in between) just to make sure they are clean of parasites.

It definitely needs to be said over and over about passive (observation with meds in the water) and active treatment (follow the instructions on the box!!!). There are great blog articles about how to treat specific diseases and recommended methods for each individual med.

This is what happened to me. I ordered 6 neon blue dwarf gouramis online. I put them in a quarantine tank - they were active, eating well, no spots, so I didn’t add any meds. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed the water was cloudy. I checked parameters, everything was 0 ppm, pH was 6.4. I did a WC sooner than normal, and it cleared up. Yesterday I did a WC - today, the water was cloudy and one of them was dead. I took it out immediately, checked parameters, everything was still 0ppm, pH was still 6.4. I did a WC, removed the charcoal bag, and dosed with Maracyn. I was thinking about moving them to the big tank this weekend - glad this happened before I did that, rather than after! So keeping new fish quarantined a longer time rather than a shorter time is not being excessively paranoid. It’s necessary to be sure you don’t kill all the fish in your main tank. The remaining gouramis seem to be doing well, but I can’t risk any chance they are infected with something. I really want them in a bigger tank because they’re starting to chase each other - my main tank is 55g and has more plants and driftwood than the 20g quarantine tank, giving the more space. I’m not experienced enough to tell males from females, so it could be a territorial thing, but I’m keeping them isolated for at least another month.

This video helped me decide to medicate my 16 gallon tank with Ich X rather than moving one affected fish to a hospital tank, causing it more stress. Fungal spots visible on just one fish may mean that the entire tank is affected. I will move sick fish out of my planted tank only if I decide to treat it with aquarium salt. Thank you for this comprehensive guide.

I use ick X in all water for my bioactive gecko terrarium. It goes in the gecko's water in its food , to mist it to feed the feeder insects to water the plants. It seems to help keep off the mold and smell

I’m in Canada, so my (legal) options are more limited. Most of the pet store guppies I have bought succumbed to columnaris or camallanus worms within a week. Fritz Paracleanse & malachite green treatment wasn’t able to save them, and I wonder if it only hastened their demise. Fortunately, the guppies I got from another hobbyist are doing well. But I want to add more genes to the colony, so I tried my luck and purchased another pair from a local pet store. They’re quarantined now. I am wondering if it would be less stressful if one were to space out treatments so that I’m not hitting them with dewormer at the same time as malachite green? I’m inclined to just use dewormer and aquarium salt in the quarantine tank, and just monitor them. I welcome people’s thoughts, just bear in mind I can’t purchase levamisole, fenbendazole, or Erythromycin here.

I would definitely not use Seachem Prime water conditioner with Ich-X because according to the manufacturer, it would cause a bad reaction.

I have a neon tetra who has some kind of tumor on the front of its mouth. I treated it with all the available meds, as I thought it might be ich or velvet or some fungal or bacterial disease. No other fish had any issues. The fish in question has lived this way for several months now and eats and behaves normal. My neon tetras tend to be sort of fin nippers and bullies, so this fish gets picked on sometimes.

I heard Cory talk about rainbow fish getting tumors from tuberculosis they’re fine but can be highly contagious to other fish. Probably not that but it’s a possibility

We don't use or sell Maracyn 2. Maracyn one gets the job done and often I see people get confused and by maracyn 2 and not solve the problem so we don't stock it.

I don’t think we can get Maracyn in Canada. We can get Maracyn Oxy, but it doesn’t contain an antibiotic. Generally the consumer can’t go out and buy products with antibiotics as the active ingredient. So things like Columnaris seem to be a death sentence. We can try putting guppies into salted hospital tanks, but I’ve never had success with Columnaris that way. 😢

I would only be using the Ich X. Make sure you have improved the water quality to what the fish wants first before the meds.

I can't find those meds here in canada. Only herbal meds. Tree oils etc. I do use salt. Do you ship to Ontario Canada?

i made a very stupid mistake, and i bought one fish to my established and healthy 20-gallon. it had something and all but 2 fish were killed. no symptoms at all except all fish went directly into hiding, extremely skittish, and instant death. Has anyone ever heard of this before? recommendations?

Ok I'm a new hobbyist and I thought because of you tube videos that you're supposed to remove the one fish and put it in a quarantine tank and treat the fish. Because I'm new to this I probably wouldn't know what is wrong unless it had white spots. This is what I fear. The unknown.😢
