Dr Syl talks about anxiety. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a mental illness, specifically an anxiety disorder characterised by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry about events or activities. Worry often interferes with daily functioning, and individuals with GAD are often overly concerned about everyday matters such as health, finances, death, family, relationship concerns, or work difficulties. Symptoms may include excessive worry, restlessness, trouble sleeping, exhaustion, irritability, sweating, and trembling.

Hi, I'm a 55 year old male from Germany and I probably suffered from generalized anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and episodes of depression since childhood or at least early adolescence without actually realizing it. My symptoms included worrying about minor things in day-to-day live, especially having made mistakes in the past, being about to make mistakes or potentially making mistakes in the future which led to a lot of rumination and also psycological and physical tension. While not being unsympathetic, my condition wasn't seen as a health problem by my parents but I was told things like "That will go away when you get older" or "If you ony work hard enough it will get better / vanish", etc. So I gritted my teeth, was functioning enough to be able to finish school, worked an office job for a few years, continued to university where I received a master in economics before returning to working. Since then I occupy controlling jobs where my conditions - especially OCD - seemed to be sort of an advantage. Nevertheless I suffered from a lot of health conditions including back and stomach pain and the like which I attributed to overworking or burn out. That all changed about ten years ago, while I was (and still am...) in a happy relationship and having two adorable and healthy kids of then age two and four, when I suddenly developed suicidal thoughts. The Problem was that my general practising doctor at the time dismissed my tentative trys at adressing the issue which left me uncertain and selfdoubting. Since the suicidal thougths receded it took some time - actually about two years - before I trusted myself enough to address the issue with another doctor who - luckily - took my condition seriously and refered me to a psychotherapist. Even then it took another year before he had a free slot to admit me to therapy. The therapeutical approach isn’t cognitive behavioural therapy but beggars can’t be choosers and I get along with him just fine. I’m still continuing the therapy but the first turning point in my opinion was the introduction of medication about five years ago and which I was very sceptical about at the beginning. After starting with Escitalopram which I had to dicontinue due to side effects I was prescribed Duloxetin which after taking it for several weeks I suddendly had the feeling like a heavy blanket had been lifted off me and I could breath freely for he first time in my life! Still despite therapy and the medication I fell into a major depression last year which left me unable to function in daily life including work for several weeks and which took a long time for me to recover from. What helped a lot beside the therapy and medication is public available information on channels like yours here on KZbin which show that people suffering from mental illnesses are not alone! Furthermore I’d like to recommend the videos (and also the books) from your fellow countryman Matthew Johnstone „I had a black dog, his name was depression“ kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpqmo6GfgbZ6j8U and „Living with a black dog“ kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIe1g6ttgtmYppo , which made it possible for me not only to describe but to show my doctors using the illustrations how I was feeling at the time. But the next major turning point came when I started using mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) while reading Jon Kabat-Zinn’s book „Full Catastrophe Living“. That has really been the recent game changer for me which not only helped me to better recover from my depression but I was also able to reduce my dosage of Duloxetin, abstain from alcohol, which negatively impacted my depression symptons, and lead an overall healthier life. Though my mental illnesses will probably accompany for therest of my life I now have a way to cope with them! Thank you so much for the possibility to share my story and hopefully the mentioned references may also help others to better deal with their conditions! Have a great holiday time!

Great video. I’m from the USA. Anxiety disorders are so hard to live with, especially when one’s anxiety (in my case) resulted from sustained early childhood trauma. Thx for the videos!

My anxiety makes me go from 0 to 10,000 in a millisecond. I am also extremely irritable and angry because of it. Worse as I move into late middle age. Can't really keep a job

I’ve had GAD for as long as I can remember with symptoms of depression as well. It’s so difficult to function when you feel that everything is something to be worried about. Debilitating panic attacks followed by half an hour of nothingness as you come back down. It’s exhausting. And then the apathy that comes with my depression is such a whiplash. I thought I had biopolar disorder for awhile because of it. Thankfully through meds (Zoloft and Buspar) and psychotherapy I’ve gotten better. I was monitored just in case early on but the only real symptoms I got was a sick stomach for about a week. Now I’m pretty settled in and good. It’s been about two years and I feel great.

What you need is natural solution and it helped me, anti depressants didn’t do any job for my anxiety and depression, after I was told by a close friend to try psychedelics mushrooms in a short time everything was gone , micro dose on psychedelic mushrooms to get a perfect solution, I get mine from an online come that specializes in the growth and sales of psychedelic products

You always hit the nail on the head 🤗 Everything I thought of as something to point out/suggest etc you said it after I had the thought anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️😅 And yes, 100% agree about the psychology and medication combination. It’s like the Power Combo lol. Once you manage to find a good therapist and can do that too it’s so helpful. I had to try different therapists because I needed someone that specializes in trauma, but finding the therapist that I click with has really been a game changer. For other people who are trying to find a psychologist that they click with, I’d suggest asking friends if they know of any psychologists that they or someone they know had positive experiences with (if you have that kind of relationship and they don’t mind sharing that info etc). My therapist was recommended to me by a friend. The other thing I’d suggest is checking out a therapists list of qualifications and areas of interest. Private practice clinics usually have a website and the psychologists have profiles on there listing what therapy techniques they’re trained to use and also their specific areas of interest - if they list GAD (or whatever it is you need help with), then that will be a better bet for if they can provide the kind of support you need. It might be worth trying if you haven’t had any luck yet with other therapists 🤗 One last thing, Dr Syl… the dramatic camera zooms in the benzos section were my favourite 👌😅 If you haven’t already, can you please make a video just about benzos with as many dramatic zooms as possible, and then when people inevitably start hating on benzos I can just reply with a link to your benzos video 😅🤷🏻‍♀️😋😇

Both myself and a family member have GAD. I do well with talk, art & somatic therapy (both on my own and supervised). My family member is not a therapy fan but has found the medicine helpful. I wanted to mention that this combo actually works well in our family system as we're both better able to respond and co-regulate. So I'd say it's definitely worth seeing the treatment through the 'it takes a village' lens. I'm also in NSW, Australia

I have generalized anxiety disorder with panic attacks. I take 1mg of Klonopin twice a day to keep it in check, I'm a little nervous because Ive been on it for years. We also were trying upping my celexa, but that made my bipolar depressive episodes worse. I'm trying to get into see a therapist, unfortunatly there is a bit of a wait time to get to see someone. I get to see a diagnostic therapist in 2 months then a regular therapist. I have bipolar 1, Borderline Personality Disorder, GAD with panic attacks, CPTSD, and ADHD... so I think I'm hard to treat. I take 8 different medications right now.

It’s so hard balancing out medications when there’s multiple conditions too (I feel you, I get it 💕). You’re definitely doing the right thing by waiting to see the psychologist - I know you know, but sometimes the reassurance is nice 🤗✨

Right? There’s so many other awesome ones that never get mentioned, and most people hear psychotherapy or anything about talking to a psychologist and they recoil with the immediate “Talking about it? I think NOT!” (Full disclosure though, I used to be that person too 🙈😅). I try to educate people nowadays about how many different kinds of psychotherapies there are available, so hopefully it’ll give someone the confidence to try seeing a therapist once they’re aware that there isn’t just CBT and nothing else available to them 🤗

shopping around for a psychologist is much easier said than done in country Victoria. Every psychologist has a very long waiting list, so if i didn't click with the first one, I felt like there weren't really any other options. I went to a clinic for post natal depression and anxiety, and they paired me with a youngish bloke. I'm not saying blokes can't understand what it's like being a parent, or that they aren't well trained, but when it comes to understanding the mental load, this guy had no idea!! His specialty was drug and alcohol counselling. Maybe he was the only psychologist available
