How to Start Tree Forming a Shrub - In this video I start the process of tree forming a Hydrangea paniculata. It isn't really a difficult task as long as you start with something that has a good single leader.

Its a trick. Here in Georgia, February and March likes to make you think its getting warm for a couple weeks, you get out there all excited, planting.. then 😑 it freezes, ices, snows, etc.

I’m a longtime fan of tree form shrubs. We moved to a home where the yard was over-planted with shrubs that were simply too large for the space. I’ve been able to limb up several of them into multi-trunk tree forms. Doing so has allowed us to keep some of those mature shrubs... while others had to come out to make way for more appropriately sized new shrubs. Now I want a paniculata hydrangea, too!

Another fantastic video!!!! I have a small lot so I am tree forming a lot of shrubs that grow 10-15 feet instead of buying a lot of trees since many trees get much much larger. Also I find there are more evergreen shrubs than there are evergreen trees, so by tree forming them I have more evergreen "tree" options I have been just learning as I go and this is the first video of it's kind I can find. I really appreciate this video!!! Thanks for the great content!!!! Maybe once they are less akward I will submit some pictures of my tree forms for the subscribers Sunday video.

Interesting you talked about the plant tape. I ran out last year when the world stopped turning. Went to Lowe’s praying they would have some Pixie Purple Lorapetalem . Nothing but I got the Plant Tone you suggested and low and behold on a clip strip at the checkout was the tape. I bought 3, that will last me 30 years.

I live in Laurel, Ms & currently rooting gardenia cuttings from an old homeplace (~1940s). This gardenia has much larger leaves than my "August Beauty". Do you think this could be a "Mystery"? If not, any ideas what type it might be? Next question: Do you think this would make a good tree form? These cutting are in a propagation box w/grow light & sphagnum moss. No roots yet after 6wks in the box, but the leaves are lush & happy! I enjoy your videos?

I have 3 types of gardenia cuttings (dwarf radicans is one, not sure what the other 2 types are, but they're not August Beauty) that have been in propagation box w/grow light for 6wks. To my amazement, one type has grown buds & looks as if its about to bloom!!! These cuttings came from a shrub I bought @ Lowes many yrs ago, but I do not remember what type I bought. Could it be the "Frostproof"? Does the frostproof bloom earlier than other types? Thanks!

Forming a bush into a tree has a limited time to do it? I have a Crape Myrtle bush that is between 3 - 4 years old that also has the “main branch” lopsided when it can be the main one to mold it to a tree… but I don't know if it's too late to do it
