I tricked out my Gaggia Classic pro with a bottomless Portafilter, Baristapro Precision Filter Basket 18 grams, Caffewerks Silicone Group Gasket Orange and IMS Nanotech Shower Screen. It is amazing how four upgrades can improved the experience and quality of my espresso shots. I am now getting more consistent results.

Hi Marc - I recently bought the Classic Pro from WLL with a Baratza Sette 270 grinder after having suffered through years of overly acidic, watery under-extractions on my Gaggia Brera and all I can say is wow, this machine and setup is absolutely fantastic, being able to dial in and really pull high quality, balanced, tasty shots is extremely satisfying. Looking forward to tinkering around more with it and making some of these upgrades!

And there you go saying how quick we are to respond and I'm 3 days late to your comment. Guessing you've received your grinder by now hopefully it's working well for you. Be aware static can be an issue initially and in low humidity conditions. That gets better after the burrs get some oil on them from the coffee. If it continues stir your beans with a wet finger prior to grinding and that will control the static.

Hi SC, Thanks for the comment. I honestly do not think it's worth it. Not a concern for you with older machine, but that kind of mod voids on newer machine. As I've mentioned before, brew pressure only reaches above normal if grind size causes it to. Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sandy, Thanks for the love and sharing your opinion on the upgrades! Sounds like this video really hit home for you. As mentioned in the video I advise against the PID. Voids any remaining warranty and could cause problems. Fairly easy to surf temp with flushes and quick hits of steam on the Classic with some practice. On the OPV understand under normal extraction brew pressure is good. In static closed system (no flow out of the group) pressure is over 9 bar. Same as you'll get on most smaller vibration pump machines in order to provide a good flow rate. If grind size is right, internal pressure during an actual extraction never gets anywhere close to pressure measured in a static system. Marc
@sandyd4271
@sandyd4271 3 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for your advice. You are absolutely right about the OPV but without a pressure gauge it’s hard to really know. I think if Gaggia wants to win the “coffee lottery” they should make a gaggia classic with PID and pressure gauge! It’s the only reason why I sometimes look at other machines 😅

I agree... although, after having a pid, I think it is possible to develop a reliable non pid technique Basically, if you time how long it takes to go from the heating element on, to heating element off Then you can calibrate when will be a good time to start brewing Let’s say the heating element switches on at 180, and takes 30 seconds to switch off at 215 Then you can force the boiler to cool to switch on.... wait for 20 seconds.... and you will be at a good brew temp with heating element on Anyway, if I had to go back to a non pid single boiler... this is what I would do Cheeers

Dude if you have to install PID you shouldve opted for another machine that already has temp control, PID is way too complex for the intentional use of gaggia classic. If its that essential for the consumer / gaggia classic market, they wouldve made an option for PID version or at least upgraded so that all gaggia has PID.

Another great video Marc. I have learnt so much. Got my classic a year or so ago and love it. Still working out a few bugs like sloppy pods and espresso coming down to fast. But I will conquer that. However under where the portafilter goes on…there are four screws that holds everything in to the frame, and I’m not sure why but every so often the two front screws fall out or almost fall out. The back ones stay tight but the front two don’t. What can that be from and is there something I can do to stop it from happening . Thanks for all your advice and help over the past year or two 🇨🇦☕️

Hi lyn, You're welcome for the help! I've never heard of those screws randomly falling out. I inquired with our tech department and neither have they. If the threads for the screws are stripped it's possible pump vibrations could work them loose over time. You could try a product like Loctite: www.loctiteproducts.com/en/know-how/build-things/threadlocker-red-or-blue-which-ones-right-for-you.html Take out the offending screws, apply some Loctite to the threads and screw them back in securely. Thanks Marc- Yeah- I thank you for taking the time to answer- it's much appreciated- I'm looking for a good machine- I dunno whether to get an entry level now, or take the plunge now and a prosumer- thats' the quandary at this point- I don't mind taking the time to dial in, working at getting a good cup- that would be fine- I don't mind shots being off a little bit here and there- i actually don't mind a cup of either bitter or acidic tasting if it's not totally horrendous. I will probably go with the classic pro- almost ready to go that route I think, but just wanna make sure that it will compete pretty well with prosumer- Again, the fact it can be overhauled is a huge plus- I think the more complicated ones with their electronics panels and lcd etc would be harder to overhaul if something went wrong in those lines-

Fantastic video, I did the gasket upgrade and got a Barista Pro Nanotech basket. It was pretty easy even for my non-mechanically inclined self. Biggest issue was the screw on the shower screen was pretty tight and I had to flip it over, factory may have tightened it a bit much. I want to get the nanotech shower screen as well, but it was out of stock and will be until May. I do have to complement Whole Latte Love big time on their shipping. I ordered early in the morning and it was out of the warehouse same day. In terms of the upgrades I've done one shot with the new basket so far and really can taste a pretty nice quality bump already. May also get the bottomless some day.

@@Wholelattelovepage Hey Marc... here is a tip that may be useful.... As you know, freshly ground espresso is fluffy, and so, if you grind it into the basket, you have a little mountain that needs to be carefully leveled What I do now is to grind into a cup After weighing... invert the cup on to the basket Shake the basket with cup on top to level out coffee But still, the fluffy coffee will be above the top of the basket So I take the bottomless porta filter with cup still on top and firmly tap it on and tap it down onto a towel on the counter This semi compacts the espresso to a level below the top of the basket Which makes it a bit easier to do final leveling and tamping Anyway,, this technique works well for me Thanks again to you and WLL

This video popped up after I re-watched the "Gaggiuino Project" modification video for the Gaggia Classic (and Pro). If Gaggia would add this mod as a feature to their "Classic Pro," they would, as Emeril LaGasse would say, "has kicked it up a notch!" 😀 The author of the Gaggiuino software has made it clear there's to be no profit made from his work, but I'm sure the folks at Gaggia could develop code to do the same using the STM32 chip. I'm waiting for a few more parts before I can do the modification to my Classic Pro. The "Gaggiuino" mod makes the other PID mods look pretty lame in comparison.

Hi b, Thanks for the comment and question. They can be difficult. Be sure and use the proper size Phillips head screw driver so as not to damage the slots in the screw head. If you have a socket that accepts a Phillips head bit that can help you get more leverage. If that does not help try turning to tighten slightly before loosening. If you have a propane torch you can try some gentle heating. If still not there flip the machine upside down and apply a penetrating oil like WD40 to the screw and let it soak in for 20 minutes. If using the penetrating oil be sure and clean thoroughly with soap/water to remove before using the machine. Hope that helps! Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 11 ай бұрын
Hey richard, understand your concern. I'm trying to think of a semi-auto machine which has a totally sealed water reservoir and I don't know of any. For reference I've used just about every semi-auto machine available in North America for the last decade. For dust, the gap is better covered by the overhang of the machine than most. Bugs?... Not sure how you prevent that in any machine aside from not having bugs around to begin with. There are in-reservoir filters available like this one for the Gaggia Classic: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestcup-m-package It connects directly to the machines water intake tube. The filter has activated carbon for chemical contaminants, particle filtration which should take care of dust/bugs. Filter also removes calcium and replaces with magnesium so you're protected from lime scale deposits in the machine. Hope that helps! Marc

I'd love to know/see your take on how to eyeball/adjust the pressure without a separate calibration device. I know there's a lot of emphasis on grind size with dialing in, but since there's not a pressure gauge on this machine to determine whether it's actually too high or too low, I'd love to know some rules of thumb on dialing in the pressure when the coffee still isn't "right" even with the correct ratios and pull times. This will be my first upgrade from an appliance to a machine. Thank you so much for these videos.

Hey Thomas, Congrats on your new machine! None of the upgrades is required. If your GCP was manufactured recently chances are it already has the stainless steel holding plate. I do like the silicone group gasket. It's much softer than stock allowing for easier clock-in and they last longer. That's something you could pick up now and either replace immediately or wait till the original wears out - group gaskets are a wear item. I also like the precision filter baskets. Stock is fine, but if you like larger coffee doses or want deeper extractions they tend to have a higher natural flow rate so require grinding a bit finer which can get more out of a coffee. Hi R, I hear you and you are correct. Do keep in mind the boiler in the Classic is quite thick and low in internal water volume so it's not really an issue. Comparable single boiler machines with copper boilers cost more and take a lot longer to go from brew temps to steaming temps. One can steam on a Classic in less than 30 seconds from flipping the switch. The Rancilio Silvia with a brass boiler takes ~2 minutes until fully steam ready On the flip side, they tend to have larger water volumes in the boiler so may produce vigorous steam for a longer period. But, plenty of power in the Classic to steam enough milk for even a larger latte. Marc

Hi Mike, A slight bit of play in the black female receiver is normal. It's a press in modular assembly. Play there should not cause the plug to fall out. The most important ‘tricks’: 1. Pressure. Get it down to 9 bar by modifying the OPV. And 2. Flow. A simple 120v lamp dimmer attached to your pump allows you to pre-infuse, and to control the flow throughout your shot. All the other stuff? The shower screen etc? Yeah those are nice mods that help, but the above two are the real difference-makers.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi GK, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have to mention changing the OPV may reduce brew water flow rate with un-intended consequences. Pressure within the portafilter with stock OPV as measured by a properly tuned Scace device simulating release of pressure during an extraction is within generally accepted brew pressure limits. There's a misconception that static pressure measurements using a non-releasing PF mounted gauge reflects the pressure within the PF during an extraction. It does not. Know that smaller vibration pump machines flow less water at a given pressure than prosumer level machines with rotary pumps at the same pressure. Many respected names in specialty coffee feel flow rate is a more important variable than brew pressure. I understand and appreciate those who enjoy hacking machines. I'm sure those who do understand there are risks involved (do at your own risk) and warranties are void if doing so.

@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for the reply! My thought was actually based on my experience with the Saeco ViaVenezia I just recently acquired, where with an unpressurized basket the flow was either far too much & too fast, or I was choking the portafilter. Even with a stepless grinder I could not find a point where I could get a good input/output ratio. But turning the screw on the OPV four turns, thereby reducing the max pressure, resulted in a perfect flow. I did not use a gauge; I simply judged by what’s in the cup.

I'm upgrading to the IMS screen soon as I find one at a sensible price, the stock screen really does clog easily.

every bottomless porta filter i can find for sale online has this comment "NOT for Gaggia models after 2015 Key Product Features". Do you have any idea what this means? why would the portafilters not be for models after 2015? is it still going to work? Thanks in advance for your help. Anyone else have an idea what the issue is with 2015 vs newer?

Hi Keith, This bottomless PF works in any Gaggia Classic or Classic Pro sold in North America regardless of year: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-bottomless-portafilter I suspect the "not for models after 2015" has something to do with Gaggia Classics sold in EU markets. It was around 2015 that Classics in the EU did away with the 3-way solenoid valve (3-way solenoid returned to EU models a few years later). EU models without the 3-way are identified by the lack of the exposed decompression duct tube running from group head area into left rear of drip tray. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi - I have a Gaggia Classic Pro. I noticed in your video the bottomless porta filter comes with a precision basket. My question is 1) do I go with that or 2) stick with the portafilter that comes with the machine and add a nanotech basket or 3) do I gain anything with bottomless + nanotech basket?

Hi Jose, Thanks for the question. Most people like the bottomless PF for checking their technique and for the beauty of watching the extraction take form. Using a bottomless, you'll know if your distribution and/or tamping technique are off. If it is you'll get blank areas and/or spurts from spots on the visible bottom of the filter basket. Be aware the spurts can be messy and require some extra cleanup - motivation to improve your technique! When done well bottomless shots are beautiful to watch - some call it espresso porn :). Also may be easier to see when it's time to stop the extraction based on the espresso drip blonding out. Hope that helps! Marc

So with the shower plate holder: stainless will hold more heat than aluminum, but aluminum will have more even heat distribution and will get to temp faster. I assume Gaggia chose aluminum on the older Classics (including mine) because it shortens the time to get to temp, but I do wonder if the more even heat distribution was also a consideration. Have you had trouble with the new stainless ones being less even temp-wise?

I have an old classic, I upgraded the head and put an 8.5 gasket in The ports filter is hard to get at 6 oclock. What is the wrong if any.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi GC, Maybe nothing wrong. Be certain the gasket is fully seated in the channel. When new, gaskets will be a little stiff and clock in should become easier. Is the new gasket silicone or the harder stock rubber? Silicone is more pliable. Harder rubber needs some break in. Also be certain the group is very clean - especially the channels where the tabs from the portafilter lock in. Any coffee residue there can inhibit movement. Marc

Hello! Thanks for the vid! I just installed the ims shower screen and I think that on the left side less water is going thru, is that normal? Also the stock group gasket is a little bit heavier than the new one with a little bit over 300g, compared with the ims one (ca 260g I think), is the ims still better?

Hi SS, Not unusual to have variations in water flow out of the shower screen. Could be a slight tilt, coffee residue, or surface tension of water. Heavier is not necessarily better for group gasket. Silicone gaskets do weight less, last longer and don't require stiff clock in like stock rubber gaskets. Marc

hey Marc, the gasket I ordered is blue. will it still work?

Hey MJ, Not if it was this blue one: www.wholelattelove.com/products/caffewerks-silicone-group-gasket-71-x-56-x-9mm For a lightly used Gaggia Classic, Classic Pro or Classic Evo Pro you want the orange: www.wholelattelove.com/products/caffewerks-silicone-group-gasket-73-x-57-x-8mm For older well used Gaggia Classics get the yellow one: www.wholelattelove.com/products/caffewerks-silicone-group-gasket-73-x-57-x-8-5mm The yellow one is a little thicker so can compensate for worn metal on portafilter or grouphead Hope that helps! Hola, Still loving my Gaggia Class Pro but have a couple questions. 1) Does the "blowout Tube work automatically when needed? 2) Sometimes the basket gets stuck when the handle is removed, how can I prevent this? Should I clean it out immediately after each use (I usually wait until used again). That's it. Out of five espresso machines I owned at home this Gaggia is by far the best. Gracia.

Hi Chef, Thanks for sharing your Classic love and the questions! 1. Yes. It should shoot out a bit of water at the end of an extraction automatically. 2. Best to knock used coffee out of basket immediately after use. Not uncommon for filter baskets to stick in the group if left tightly clocked in and the machine cools off. PFs should be left in the group when not in use. To avoid basket sticking clock in lightly. Also helps to keep the gasket, group and shower screen clean. And don't forget other maintenance like backflushing after every few dozen brew cycles. Here's a video featuring a maintenance package for the Classic everything you need and basic maintenance advice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4WbYYR_mLWWjMU Hope that helps! Marc

Is the classic pro an E61, and does it matter anyway?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Or, No it is not an E61. Does it matter is a matter of opinion. E61 group is well know for thermal stability but lowest priced machine with E61 group is about 3x the cost of the GCP. Marc
