Watch the crew at VISION landscapes tackle a big hedge very quickly and efficiently! We are based out of the West-Island of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. www.paysagesvision.com
Hedge trimming and reshaping existing overgrown hedges is satisfying! For trimming, we only use battery tools. Husqvarna has an awesome lineup!

Thank you for showing the top trimming of cedar/thuja hedges (for some reason no one does). Can you advise how the trees grow after having the tops trimmed down like that?
@phil.vision
@phil.vision 7 ай бұрын
Hi! The growth response can varry depending on age of hedge, season of trim, width, ect. This was done in early spring which is ideal because the sap is returning up to the tips. Pruning then will encourage new shoots. Sometimes new shoots will not appear if they hedge is malnourished, unhealthy ect. Reductions in the winter or late fall aren't idea since the sap goes "down" for the winter months. In my experience, reductions regrow better on narrower hedges. On these wide hedges, they sun will scald the interior and dry it up. Not killing it, but drying up any new shoots... Reductions are a reactionary type of trimming, and in this case was to get get more sun into the yard. It's also easier to maintain it at 16' than trimming it at 20 (nearly impossible without a spider lift) Cheers!

when you make that flat wall appearance, how do yo know how much to trim off so you don't go to gar back and make the tree bare?

I usually " stay within the green " on the sides. I know where to go by experience. If you cut in the wood, you'll scrap the hedge sides.

I was watching your video trimming the hedges. My question is I have seen where there are videos where the are cedar hedges that were drastically reduced in height because they were overgrown. How long does it take for them to grow back on top or do they regrow at all?
@phil.vision
@phil.vision 9 ай бұрын
HI! It depends on where they are located. In Canada, we can't be as agressive to them as in the UK for example.

Thank you for your reply and Happy New Year! I am in the south of Quebec. I ended up trimming the hedges quite a bit this past summer. My hedge is about 14' tall and I want to bring it down to about 6'. I know it will look terrible on top for awhile and being so open it will probably be spread apart by heavy snow in the winter. What are the chances the hedge will bounce back and grow back to look good? It has been growing since 1985, but it has gotten out of hand for this 73 year old so getting up on a 16' ladder is out of the question, plus it is about 8-10 feet across and the pole saw is getting too heavy to try and cut it from one side. The other side is on a slight incline so it is hard to put a ladder straight on that side, I have to block up the legs so it is level. A real pain!

What variety of hedge is it ? And what country are you in? Geographical location is a factor when knowing how much to reduce hedges.

Hi, what would you recommend (tool wise) if one was to adventure trimming their own cedars? Minimally one pole saw and one trimmer with a pruning ladder? I'm still dubious on the battery operated units and feel like my gas powered ones would be better suited for longevity. Thank you for helping me choose on the appropriate tools. Ideally I'd get one long trimmer and one long pole saw. Echo or Stihl. Where did you get your ladder?
@phil.vision
@phil.vision 7 ай бұрын
Hey! I’m a Hasegawa ladder dealer in Quebec Canada. You can look up New England ladder in the USA . I’d invest in battery powered equipment … user enjoyment and comfort is great. Stihl hla 66 and hla 86 are both great. You need the telescopic one for wide tops but the lighter 66 is sweet for the sides to give your shoulders a break

Can one person move the 16 ft hasawega tripod ladder or do u always need 2 people? Is it not feasible for one person to work alone? Thanks
@phil.vision
@phil.vision 6 ай бұрын
Hi! It only weights 40 lbs can be manoeuvred alone. That being said, it takes some practice to set it up solo since it can “get away from you “ when moving it around. It’s 10’ taller than me and when you fold it standing up; the top needs to be balanced .

Don't worry about your kness kid. If your knees go bad in your 70's (that's 40 years for you), the procedure will be painless and fast. Medicine is moving quickly. I need a knee replacement. I have two friends who have had it done. They had them replaced in the morning and were walking by late afternoon. No more pain.They both said they wish they had it done earlier. Imagine where medicine will be if you're having knee problems in the future.

What do you mean when you say a hook on end of pole saw? A big problem for us on a similar job is the cuttings falling down inside the hedge so I'm interested in how you hook the debris? Thanks
@phil.vision
@phil.vision 3 жыл бұрын
Hi sir! The battery pole saws have this small hook on them to snag the tops, but most of the time I use the blade of the saw to grab it and fling it. If I have a lot to pull out, Ill call for another tool we have, its a fiberglass pole with a hook on it!

I’m interested what your reply was to the owner that wanted more taken off?
@phil.vision
@phil.vision 2 жыл бұрын
I told him that we can only do a 20-25% reduction per intervention. It's very important to specify these details in your written quote, or else their updated feelings are final say. Cutting too much off the top isn't the best, especially in this situation where we left growth on top to form a new crown. A deeper cut would likely negate the hedge ever growing properly again on top.

Thank you so much for answering. I figured that much. That hedge is a monstrosity, indeed. It was planted as a double row of cedars more than 50 years ago by my wife's grandfather and was not kept under control. We purchased the house and I inherited the problem. It takes me days of pain and suffering to keep it at the state it is now. And it was bigger when I first started with it!
