Great tips, thank you! I've always been hesitant with nail trims on my animals because I don't want to make them bleed and no one has EVER told me that a slight nip to the quick is what you need to do to get them to recede! Such valuable info!

Great video. My 11-year-old is comfortable with the dremel, but I like the way you zzzz, zzzz, zzzz in short bursts. I'll do that from now on. That table is grand because it's not as easy getting up off the floor as it used to be. Ha. As an aside, one thing I didn't know until recently: nail dust is harmful if inhaled. My physician said to wear a mask while using the dremel on nails. FWIW

Great video. I love how in-depth it is! I'm new to the dremel and had to learn the hard way about which direction to dremel in. I'd never heard about scraping under the nail but have noticed nail build up there and manually cleaned it. I love the comparison between the different ages and personalities reflected in nail length and shape. All around great video!! ❤🥳👍

Just finished doing your "between your legs nail trimming method" for the second time on our 12 week old persistent lab. It has taken close to an hour both times and we are both pretty exhausted when finished. Lots of extreme squirming and wrestling between relaxing for a couple nails. Two questions: 1. Does this method help establish dominance? Seems like her behavior improves the day after and she acts a little more mature. 2. Roughly how long does it take puppies to get used to this?

I may have missed this but how often do you trim nails? I have a pretty big pack and nail trimming is something I need to get more organized with... 😅
@TheHallieLogan
@TheHallieLogan 3 жыл бұрын
It varies by dog honestly, the general answer is: however often it needs to be done to keep their nails from being in constant contact with the ground. Though for most dogs that seems to be every 2-4 weeks based off my vets advice. For my personal dogs they seem to do best on an every two week nail grind. It keeps their nails off the floor, but grows out enough to give me an easy visual indication of where I ground to last time.

@@TheHallieLogan Thanks for answering my question. Half my dogs are very active with hiking, dryland mushing and general playing so I almost never need to cut their nails. But I also foster and that's where I'm unsure. Right now I have a foster Cocker Spaniel who just gave birth a few days ago and her nails are extremely long. I wasn't able to get her to the groomers before she gave birth so I trimmed all her mats myself and am now working on her nails. She was not having it and I didn't want to stress her out so I'm just going to work on one nail a day with lots of treats and praise.

I have heard vets say don’t cut deep. If you see blood then you have gone to far and it will cause your dog to forever be scared of the nail cutting processes. However, you are saying and doing opposite as you caused small blood out of Trix. And that is suppose to be a good thing?
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 3 жыл бұрын
Yes 100 percent. This is for proper mail health, lopping right through the center of the quick would be horrible. Exposing the tip is helping the quick recede and shorting the nail. This is good!!

@@StandingStoneKennels thank you, it was a serious question after watching a dozen how to videos cause I needed to do my large rescue girl. Even people who trim regularly recommend the scissor tool first, which I bought... edit:....I already tried the scissor tool and didn't like how it splintered her nails, so we patiently learned to use a regular nail file.....LOL but omgosh.....THAT is slow. I just now ordered a grinding tool for the purpose and plan on just using just that if I can..
