I just wanted to thank you for your video. Using the catch point and shaving/shaping the nail has been a game changer for us!! Our dog was a rescue from overseas and arrived on the plane with bleeding pulsing quicked nails on every toe. She was extremely traumatized and in pain, and wouldn't let us near her feet for weeks. Then she finally trusted us enough, and I blew it, not having good technique or knowing how to find the quick. It was a nightmare trying to maintain her nails for YEARS and we started having to sedate her for nail trims. I finally found your video and have been trimming every 2-4 weeks rebuilding her trust for the past 6 months. It's still a struggle, and a 2 person job (hubby holds her and feeds her endless treats lol), but she's come a long way and will actually stay calm through a paw or 2. I feel so much more confident and even helped my mom trim her dog's nails. I see the light at the end of the tunnel and I know eventually we'll get to a point where she just sits for her trim without a fuss. I have also noticed that if we get off schedule and her nails start to get long, the toe joints get tender and she gets extra stressed about the next trim. So if someone has a dog that is flinching away, that toe or foot just needs extra patience. I hope my story is encouragement for others.

Lovely to see how much that dog trusts you. You must have a good track record of not hitting the quick. Does exposing the quick like that make it uncomfortable for them to walk though? I need to shorten my rescues quicks, but don’t want him to have to feel the quick as he walks.

It’s important for owners to know that 99% of dogs won’t tolerate clipping, especially not the way it’s being done here. The clippers being rubbed around their nails and played with is incredibly scary to them. The nails need to be cut quickly or the dog gets even more scared and stressed.

How do you get them short if they are really long? In one trimming you can only so to the quick, does the quick then retract a little so you could trim again soon and get them under control?

Your video is awesome but I was wondering if a large safari clipper will do the job? I'm getting a standard poodle and I'm going to foster a brown lab soon...I have hand problems so I thought the bigger one would be better? Can I use a nail file for my dog to get used to the nail touching? Should I get the smaller one too? Both dogs will be puppies!

I have a 13wk old griffon. I’ve trimmed her nails like you recommend since she came home at 8 weeks, every week. She fights me and whines the whole time. I can calm her but as soon as I start trimming again she’s struggling. She’s getting stronger and it’s getting harder. She has made a little progress on how she handles it but not enough to balance out her increasing strength. Do I just keep on trucking every week and she’ll get better or is there something else I should be doing?

How do you do the dew claws on a small hairy dog? Big dogs are always the ones being shown. Great video by the way. I noticed you went back on the first nail because it wasn’t short enough. Do you have to go shorter? Can you leave it after the first cut.? I get so sweaty doing this. I have been doing it for years. It’s the hardest part of trimming a pup. Beautiful German wired hair Pointer by the way. Does she hunt?

@@StandingStoneKennels sitting, standing, laying down. He wants no part of it. I give him treats with his paw in my hand with the drimmel on or clippers touching him he's fine, but once I put one of them on a nail he screams and runs. Very dramatic lol. He is 5.5 months old so hopefully he'll get better.

Mindy Russell - try giving your dog “Rescue Remedy”. It is a naturopathic remedy for dogs (and people) when they are in a stressful situation or have suffered a trauma. You can purchase this “tincture” at a health food/natural health store. There are 2 kinds - one which has an alcohol base (the original formulation) and one made specifically for animals which has no alcohol. I have used both types for my dog. I prefer the original “tincture” as it is just dropped into her mouth. The one for animals is to be administered on a treat or put in their food/water. It is a bit more inconvenient if you are dealing with an acute situation where you need immediate treatment for fear/anxiety/trauma, etc. It might be advantageous when you can plan to offset or prevent a stressful situation beforehand. Anyway - “Rescue Remedy” is made by (I believe) the Bosch company and is the brand I choose to use for myself and my dog. I hope this helps. The best of luck with your puppy. 👵🏻🐾💕🇨🇦

Informative video, but the metal piece "nail guard" is to prevent cut nails falling all over the place and not to indicate cutting length, but this misinformation is been spread in various - even from dog groomers - videos on KZbin. 😂

Not trying to be rude but you really need to edit your videos before publishing. It’s frustrating watching a video trying to learn an important skill but having to get thru the cameraman trying to figure out what he’s doing throughout and a lot of rambling by the both of you. Imagine if someone is in the process of doing their dog’s nails but have to stop everything continuously for the video to just get to the point?
