This is my first year planting sedums and I seem to be having the same problems as you. The upright ones are struggling. I have 3 low growing ones, that I actually used Biotone when I planted them (at that time I didn't know that they didn't like it) and they are doing great. Have 3 PW Bright ideas that I got from Lowe's and I'm pretty sure they are dead. I'll replace them later this fall or next spring with something else. Thanks for letting us know to leave some things along. I've been an annuals girl for all my life and now that I'm in my early 60s, this year, I decided to plant a lot more perennials. Therefore, this video was very helpful and when to cut things back and when to leave things along.

I feel you on that sedum! My achilles heel is--are you ready for this?--salvia. Yep, "beginner gardener" salvia manages to go wooden at the crown and die back on me, no matter where I put it (beds with irrigation! Beds with no irrigation! Pots! Raised beds!). So, the PW Indiglo Girl and Violet Riot types have all gone belly up, but somehow I can do the tall salvia type like Mystic Spires. We all have our plants we manage to kill!

Typically we are not having to irrigate at this point in the year, but we are on the border of a severe/moderate drought so we can't stop watering yet. We really could use a week of rain!

Very helpful video. I look forward to these. I have autumn joy sedum and i actually plant them with just a little bit of bio tone and just a little bit more water. Just a little. Thank you for all the helpful information, I was surprised about the Russian Sage. I cut mine back every fall! It comes back and thrives year after year! I know all areas are different and it could be where it is located. 5B here Northern Michigan.

I do not own Felco pruners. I want to, but I need to hold them to determine the right ones for my hands. A local garden center chain has them locked up. I tried cutting back my baptisia that's next to the public sidewalk, very well traversed by locals walking their dogs to the nearby park. My cheap pruners were too dull to cut them cleanly, I've had someone at the hardware store sharpen for me. Had to bring out the expensive Barnel hedge shears and they worked great, but I must not make a habit out of abusing them. I have some marginal plants (I'm in zone 4 b) I'm hoping to overwinter. I'll try covering their rootball with more composted manure and poke some hydrangea blooms around the base (a tip I heard about on another channel). Rainbow spurge did so well this summer. I've had success with Rozanne geranium in the past and a couple are new this year so will help them out with extra covering. As much as I hate saying goodbye to my gardens at this time of year, it's almost therapeutic cutting back plants, creating a clean slate for next year's growth.

No tips- my Black in Back Sedum died too. I was so excited. I managed to snip a couple cuttings and stuck them in the ground before the plant succumbed. Hopefully those cuttings survive through winter.

21:59 I have the same problem with sedums here in Oklahoma zone 7! We have clay too, and the only area I have happy sedums are next to a huge mature Rose of Sharon. She’s taller than the house and I can imagine her roots stretch far and wide. Nothing else survives planted near her, and she doesn’t survive anything being planted near her! So I’ve always assumed she sucks up all the extra water the sedum don’t want. They live harmoniously with very rare supplemental water, even in our hot dry summers. I just have to give up trying to plant anything else over there lol!

I'm in the north in Vermont Even tho I'm not in your ares but our Sedum if you have Autumn Joy like it in the shade mine grow very vigorously but not so well if they get too much sun and we don't get the hot sun you all do and do much better in the shade like hosta do even in the north. maybe try it in a shade garden type ???? hope this helps

I live in zone 6B where the soil will freeze a few inches deep. Do you have a general guideline for when perennials need to be in the ground before that happens? I've heard 6 to 8 weeks. Thank you!

I can’t grow Sedums because we have too much rain! We had a summer where it was feast or famine with rain.In June we had 19” in 3 days, uprooted 2 trees in my son’s yard and 1 in mine. None of the plants that like dry soil will grow here! But I personally love the rain ❤

I know you don’t have it on a lot of irrigation but I wonder if even a little moisture with the clay soil may hold on to much of that moisture. I was cleaning out beds this morning and I’d forgot about some planted where they get NO water and it’s been dry here in So. Missouri zone 6B / 7 A with clay soil. They were blooming their little heads off. Just a thought. Love you program

You sure can! For me they will keep a small green mound of foliage so I don’t shear them down completely.

I never have luck with sedums , they look great in their nursery containers but once I plant them in the ground they just decline . I think my clay soil doesn’t make them happy no matter how little water they get .

I would plant your sedum at the top of the burm so they can drain easier. The clay will hold water, but because of the incline, it's probably holding more water in flatter areas.

Try watering your sedum more often. If the roots are still alive, chances are that it is too dry for them. Your tree might be taking too much water from them.

I cut back baptisia in the fall when all the foliage has dried up, kinda treat like a peony. They will send up fresh foliage in the spring.

My landscaper just put down mulch. In some areas, they buried the cut off plants by two inches of mulch. Should I move the mulch away from my perennials?

What zone are you? As a general rule, a little coverage of mulch is ok but I’d be concerned with 2”. You can just move some away from the crown if the plants.

@@GardeningwithCreekside Wisconsin Zone 5b. I usually do the mulching but I was trying to save effort this fall as we are selling our home next spring. I really don't need dead plants as the house goes on the market. Most of my garden is either shrubs or perennials.

My boxwoods got infected with spider mites. They are done. Should I leave them in the ground until spring or rip them out. I am so upset. Had surgery this summer and was not out or I would have been able to catch it.

If you're going to remove them then I would do it now. Otherwise you will just be overwintering the spider mites & their eggs this winter, and they will return next spring.

Thanks for this great, instructive video, including the importance of maintaining our tools. I loved seeing Brenna come to you when she saw and heard the car. She’s a well-trained, happy girl. Kudos to you for being a responsible dog owner. Sedums flourish here on Cape Cod, zone 7a, but our phlox can’t escape powdery mildew. I’m taking your advice to just get out there, even as the temperature begins to drop. 🪴 ❤
