In this video I go over my triops egg extraction video to show how I use the dry and wet method to extract eggs. This will also work for fairy shrimp, other species of triops or even sea monkeys. Drop a comment if you have any questions

I wanted to ask about your cloche - the thingy used to hold all the vials of eggs. Whats the size of it (diameter and height)? And what size vials do you use to hold the eggs?

That's a really nice cloche - you 3d print the top too? Did those eggs need to go through desiccation before hatching or do you expect a lower hatch rate when they go straight back into water? Great shots in this video.

Hey. I bought the display case at the store called dollar tree. The bottom and top tiers where the egg containers sit are 3d printed. The eggs sit to dry for ~2 weeks before extracting. I additionally put a small packet of absorbent silica packet inside the center of the display. After 2 weeks, they will hatch as normal. But without fully drying out, there will be a lower hatch rate. Interestingly, sometimes eggs don't need to be dried out, they can spontaneously hatch wet if the water conditions change quickly.

@@diy-projects Thank you for those tips - that's very useful when figuring out a sustainable source of shrimp. I've started hatching brine shrimp and found it's basically a monopoly on purchasing their eggs. And preparing sea water is another cost that isn't sustainable, so perhaps fairy shrimp and triops will be a better option long term. Thanks for these very informative videos!

Could you do this with fairy shrimp
@diy-projects
@diy-projects 5 ай бұрын
@@bongjamesbong00420 triops almost always lay their eggs in the sand dishes, i don't have experience with fairy shrimp so I'm not sure if they just scatter them all over. Many fairy shrimp eggs are also much much smaller than triops eggs, but i think the same method would work, assuming all eggs end up in the egg bin within the fish tank

@@diy-projects I've been searching for answers on to keep a sustainable population of fairy shrimp with no success
@diy-projects
@diy-projects 5 ай бұрын
@@bongjamesbong00420 fairy shrimp are a bit different than triops, they feed off of algae floating in the water while triops eat mainly solid foods. I think you could make a sustainable tank by doing similar methods as this, and removing sand every so often, and trying to hatch more. With fairy shrimp, do not use a filter, and only use a bubbler, keep the lighting high to grow algae and they should be happy with that environment

how long do eggs need to dry to be used again?
@diy-projects
@diy-projects Жыл бұрын
Although there is no exact time, I recommend drying them for at least 2 weeks before trying to hatch them. That way they will be sufficiently dry before rehydrating them. Rehydrating them too soon may not yield a good hatch rate

it might be good to sift the new sand so you already got the little junk out
@diy-projects
@diy-projects 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts. A few cycles of sifting has allowed the sand to be fully filtered so there are no more sand particles that fall through the mesh. The other stuff that falls through is dried debris from the tank water, smaller than the eggs. But this is more difficult to remove. One possible way is to get a more fine mesh to let the dust fall through
