I never had the opportunity being able to grow up fishing. 2 years ago I decided to give it a try and soon after deemed myself the world's worst fisherman. Just from watching your content I went from catching nothing and I mean literally nothing to now almost everytime I go out I am able to real something in, including my personal best which was a 30" pike at almost 9 lbs and the best part was my little guy was in the canoe with me. Just from changing my gear setup through your suggestions has made me more confident and I'm now able to give my son the opportunity that I never had. Thank you!

So glad i found this video. I purchased the rod holder for my first spring trip into algonquin park. I always attempted a 3 way swivel troll while holding the rod in my legs. The rod holder made such a massive difference. Spring conditions also helped since i didnt have to get the lures deep. After a bunch of trial and error, we found the sweet spot on the lake we were staying at. Slow trolling near the shore, saw the rod tip bounce twice, and before i knew it the reel was screaming. Landed a beauty laker. Not 30 minutes later, continued along and landed a beauty brookie. What an absolutely amazing way to catch fish.

thanks for all the tips Jon - I love my Scotty rod holder - the only thing I don't like about it is it changes the clean lines and aesthetics of the canoe but then again I have a big old camera on a tripod hanging out of my canoe so I suppose it already looks like the Vengabus anyways

Perfect video. All the pertinent info without the juvenile 'in yer face' antics. Thanks Jon. Trolling IS as good as you say. My son is a hardcore fisherman, and walleye is his favorite species to catch. May this year he landed his personal best 32" 13.6 pound walleye, trolling from the boat. And I was there, and caught mine as well. Both while trolling. The fact is, baits are always in the water at the correct depth. Once fish is released bait is down again, and stays there, unless weeds or a snag, or change of lure. This video emphasizes that point. It's a GREAT way to fish.

I have had 6 kayaks and several outboard vessels. There are one or two Scotty holders on each vessel. Most of my fishing is saltwater. I mostly troll in deep water and on the flats. I have caught some really large fish including sharks. For those with pedal kayaks', you can always keep pedaling and the holder will keep tension on the fish while you are reeling in the other rod. Happy to hear they are made in Canada. Love your dry humor. "You can beat the snot out of them."

I got into fishing recently because of your videos and now I'm hooked. Also got a rod holder pretty much right away because of the recommendations in some of your previous videos and I find that I also catch a lot of my fish (not that I catch a lot of fish) trolling. It's great tip. Funny you mention the difference in paddle. I'm often out in my solo canoe and I always bring a single blade and a double blade. I use the double blade to get from point A to B quickly, and I use the single blade for trolling or fishing a particular area since I've also noticed that the double blade is much too quick for trolling. Great video!

I just got into trolling while paddling last year and it is effective. This year I bought an Old Town kayak and because I propel the boat with my feet I can hold onto the rod while trolling. I prefer that to the holder, being able to set the hook when i feel the strike. Also I lose a few fish while getting the rod our of the holder but if I am in a canoe it is the best option. I'll be doing some trolling in Superior in less than 2 weeks. I bailed on Prairie River this summer, I think I'll need a few more days off for that trip. I decided to launch from Rossport and camp on the islands just outside Nipigon Bay.

I heard a commercial for a magnetic actuated diver last night on an outdoor show here in Cleveland. Sounds like the magnetic allows you to reset without bringing it all the way in. Also, on our fly in trips we used salty dog rod holders. The main problem vs your scottys is the salty dogs are more noisy. They are 100% aluminum except for the mounting screws and are super durable. Just an option. Oh, no modularity. One setup does all. Least that was the way back when I bought mine back in the 80s.

Jon, This tutorial provided some great food for thought. Thank you for this. I have been thinking about a lot of these points in isolation so it’s great to hear your point of view given that you do this so much more often than I ever have or likely will. One friendly suggestion would be to add a short segment to this video showing placement of the rod holder relative to your seating position. I have been experimenting with the double ended paddle and I like the efficiency that it provides. But I’d love to get your point of view on the best options for thr rod holder placement (Perhaps with different options identified depending on the type of paddle used). Thanks a lot and keep up the great work

Thanks a lot Mark, and for the suggestion! I wish I had spoken to that...the long recovery with the double blade makes me put it up farther, basically as far as I can reach (another con of the DB with the rod holder), whereas with the single blade I can keep it within a comfortable reach

@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
Hahah I follow. I feel like I used to understand this better but, if I recall, attaching to the split ring is good on crankbaits because it enhances the action of the lure. Whereas something like a jig you would tie direct

A friend and I caught a nice bass trolling a lake in Algonquin last week. We tried trolling for Lake trout but after listening to your video I think we were trolling too deep. I found the deepest parts of the lakes and let a lot of line out and trolled back and forth. I wonder how much line I should let out when fishing a deep Lake in July when the top water is warmest?
@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
Hey Martin, you took the right approach for lakers in July. But it depends on the type of lure. The deepest diving crankbait may still not be deep enough to catch them regularly. If you were using a heavy spoon or something that can freefall, that can work. To specifically target deep lake trout in mid-summer, I'm more likely to bomb out a lipless crankbait like the rippin' rap (or heavy spoon or jig), let it fall to bottom, then rip-jig it back to surface. On inland lakes, I just don't troll much for lakers in the heat of summer. Works great here on Superior though, where the water stays cold.

Trying it out this afternoon so I hope it works out. Was gonna ask if you had any advice on where to mount it so I'm not hitting it with the paddle but can still reach it easily

Jon, in the summer trolling crankbaits, do you find they go deep enough to catch fish? Still haven't caught the elusive trout yet.
@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
Good Q Danny...certainly it gets tougher in the dog days of summer. This is the toughest bite of the year to me. For warm or cool-water species (bass, walleye, pike) it still works great. Coldwater species like lake trout are tougher to catch with crankbaits in summer. On Superior, because of its cold temps, it's still very effective for trout. On inland lakes, my deepest running cranks can work, but to target deep trout in summer I'm more likely to bomb out a lipless crankbait like the rippin' rap (or heavy spoon or jig), let it fall to bottom, then rip-jig it back to surface. I don't really like the 3-way swivel rig anymore because it fouls on itself sometimes and it's just more trouble than it's worth. Locating the deep basins is critical too, if you can find the bathymetry (have a vid on finding this)

Ive been cutting my trebles to tandem hooks and I remember in a later video you talk about changing your treble hooks on your lures to single hooks. I think you said you use circle hooks, what size are working for you?
@LostLakes4 ай бұрын
Octopus hooks, similar to circle :) Size 1/0 or 2/0 is a pretty suitable replacement for most lures I find
@wildernessheadphase80634 ай бұрын
@@LostLakes awesome thanks! I bought hook way to big 4/0 & 5/0 lol Do you have a preferred way to orient them? Up,down, the side ? I was thinking if they pointed up they might go into the eye?

When paddling tandem, would you consider trolling two lures? Or would that be too much drag and hassle?
@ChrisRembKFL3 жыл бұрын
That's all I do with my dad, no rod holders either you just have it tucked into your legs and have one person going out on each side. Unless it's crazy windy youre fine. Just gotta be careful with tight turns.
@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
Oh ya Erin and I both troll together on opposite sides. But if you're using deep diving lures, it's surprising how much drag two can cause. But like Chris said, if you're making a tight turn the lines can cross
@ChrisRembKFL3 жыл бұрын
@@LostLakes honestly never considered drag on deep diving lures, I think bc 90% of the time we’re paddling we’re also trolling lol
@archie72123 жыл бұрын
I guess you could always slow your paddle rate with the double sided paddle and also paddle twice on each side just to mix things up a bit. Great video buy the way :-)
@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
Hahah true, but my "natural" pace seems to take over as I zone out into a paddling rhythm. The beauty of the single blade is that the right trolling speed came naturally. Thanks Archie!

I troll for everything , specks ,pickeral , bass ,lakers etc . But i have never used a rod holder . Just put the rod on the yoke, with the reel in the neck opening. Not very sturdy and i have had fish ( 3.5 lb speck) hit hard and pull the rod back into my lap.Only use a 5 ft telescopic rod so I'm not far out from the canoe. Can't say i do a lot of S tracking , but i don't use plugs . But unexpected stops in paddling ( like fixing a line tangle) have caught fish as the lure drops. I carry a smaller paddle as a spare and its my trolling paddle.
@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
Hey as long as you're happy with it! So true about the unexpected stops...very triggering.
@alexs34473 жыл бұрын
@@LostLakes Let me say i also use a sonar unit and this allows me to stay in the depth i desire. But if i see a drop off i can stop paddling and let the lure drop into it. Also saves a lot of lost lures through snags. Also tend to switch the sides the rod is on so that would require 2 holders
@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
@@alexs3447 ahh yes the sonar is a huge help for that. And you make a good point about switching sides easily... That is convenient

@@LostLakes I tend to work the same stretch of shoreline back and forth . Sometimes as little as 100 yds. When i turn have to watch the line doesn't catch the transducer. Even on a trip to Hogan we caught all our fish on a 200 yd stretch of shoreline

@LostLakes3 жыл бұрын
Naw I decided to stick with the 250cm. Largely just to not have to buy another one but also because my new canoe is 2" narrower so that helps a lot. Also partly because of using the rod holder...any longer and it's hard to keep it from hitting the rod on the recovery. And any longer and it would get hard to lay it in front of me in the boat.
