I learned how to post trot on the outside shoulder going forward by reading Saddle Club books as a pre teen! Lol. Those books were seriously educational! It makes a lot of sense since the weight you are sitting down for should be on the "inner edge" of the horse, kind of like skating, on skates with edges - where you put pressure, you will turn in that direction, more weight is on the inner leg rather than outer leg.

I’ve never thought about it that way but it makes sense!

Very well explained. Intrestingly all my coaches have always been telling to pay attention when to sit down. This method of concentrating when to stand up instead feels kinda more logical and the rising of your hand in walkin was an interesting way for the teacher to see that the rider actually understands when to rise. Kudos.

This is a super clear explanation! However, when I first practiced this I have to say it took me ages to look down and actually see the shoulders in action and then rise accordingly - it all happens a bit too fast! During my last lesson I kept getting it wrong, and my instructor made me "sit for two". Any tips on how to identify the correct diagonal without looking over, and like me, forgetting to steer the dang horse in the process?! 😂

Haha I’m currently struggling with the same issue! I’m a beginner rider and I can’t seem to tell if I’m on the right diagonal or not quick enough and I always forget to steer in the process! Currently working on it though!

What is the outside shoulder when the horse trots in an open field in a straight line and there is no fence nearby?
@usmanmajid78373 жыл бұрын
Good question!
@kittycatdays87192 жыл бұрын
Probably just any random shoulder, although there could maybe be a difference in case a horse isn’t all round balanced or muscled, then you choose based on that? Not sure.
@stefaniamoise73293 жыл бұрын
So when a trainer ask on which leg you are it reffers to your leg or the horses leg? And let's say the right horses leg is the outside one an you're on the left rein,which leg you are rising? Left(i mean our leg)
@ZaraMuradDressage3 жыл бұрын
So if you are on the left rein , you will be rising to the right leg (outside leg) . When that leg goes forward is when you stand up 😁
@stefaniamoise73293 жыл бұрын
@@ZaraMuradDressage thank you so much for clarifying. And just another question, my trainer is always saying one leg on the girth and one behind it,if I'm on the left rein ,which leg is on the girth and which one is behind it?
@kittycatdays87192 жыл бұрын
@@stefaniamoise7329 likely, usually, it’s the inside leg on the girth, outside is behind it
@emmawade45323 жыл бұрын
Im kinda confused.... do we always go up on the right leg moving forward or do we go up when the left leg goes forward?
@ZaraMuradDressage3 жыл бұрын
its neither the right or the left as this changes when changing the rein. It is always the outside leg (closest the the outside of the school) . You go up when the outside leg comes forward :D

@baileyrags2 жыл бұрын
yes!
@cotto06193 жыл бұрын
i dont understand how you know your on the wrong diagonal
@Willsolacethecowboy23 ай бұрын
Ik this is a super old comment but especially on bouncy horses you can feel that when you’re on the wrong diagonal it feels messier/less balanced and more uncomfortable, I kind of always feel less in tune with my horse. But if you can’t tell as well, look at your horses outside shoulder while you’re riding. That’s the one closest to the rail or just generally on the outside of the circle that you are riding in. This one was always trickier for me to see, especially if I’m riding a less bouncy horse, but you should be posting up as his shoulder moves forward. And then coming back down kind of as his shoulder moves backwards. It shouldn’t be forward while you’re sitting in the saddle, that probably means you’re on the wrong diagonal. Sorry if the second part made no sense I’ve gotten good at feeling it so I don’t really use the second method much anymore
