I struggled for hours trying to sort a new front derailleur because my other was damaged. Doesn't matter what videos I watched I still couldn't sort. It just wouldn't move up or down properly. Watched this short video and sorted it in less than 10 minutes. Biggest problem was cable tension. All other videos pull with pliers which tends to make it too tight - fingers are fine. Just then a matter of unscrewing the H screw a little and bingo. So easy to follow and understand!

Most KZbin channels completely miss this point. 3) Your microphone and audio quality are par excellence! Bad audio quality will turn me away every time, no matter how good the content. This may have given me the answer I needed. Pulled out my 30 year old Schwinn Mirada Sport that I bought in high school and haven't ridden since before the pandemic (so fall 2019 at the latest I last rode) and the front shifter is frozen on the middle ring. The Shimano 100 GS mechanism may also be gummed up but I did see some slack in the front shift cable and I do remember trying to fix this earlier by messing with the limit screws as at that time, I only had two of the three front gears. Rear shifter is working on all seven gears (although it wants to jump gears at seemingly random times). Thanks for a few things to try before I resort to bringing it in for service.

Hi. Good vid. Just a thought to cover the adjustment of gear two. Limit screws are easy for adjusting rings 1 and 3, but adjusting for number 2 can be a real bugger. You can set up 1 and 3 ok, but then it racks all the way to 1, skipping number two. The 2nd ring is all about tension adjustment and you do not have much adjustment on the barrel, often requiring experimentation with tension, undoing and redoing the cable tension nut.

Very helpful to me as I bought a Schwinn Aluminum Comp 27.5 mountain bike at Walmart that was poorly put together and set up. The biggest problem was the front chain ring would not go from smallest chain ring to middle chain ring but it would go to the largest chain ring then down to middle chain ring. Been a while since I adjusted derailleur's on a bike and this was a big help. Took me some time and I had to start over from initial set up. The front derailleur wasn't even in the proper parallel position to the chainrings. Once I got that set up properly it was a matter of taking the slack out of the cable and fine tuning the cable tension. Then I noticed the rear derailleur was not shifting properly and had to fine tune that with cable tension, which took less time. Lots of stationary testing then a test ride and all seems good now.

Many variables. There may slack in the cable somewhere. Try starting from the beginning. Release the cable pinch bolt and set the low limit screw first with the shifter relaxed (gear 1).then connect cable, pull taught with fingers only. Great video! Especially adds to my knowledge of how to identify the low and high limit screws. I have Shimano Tiagra (latest) and the instruction sheet is a bit vague in that it just says "A" or "B". My problem is that despite working through the cable tautness and the high limit screw, the chain still refuses to move over to the largest chainring. (There are two only.) I am pushing the lever inward as much as possible and it won't budge. This is a brand new Kona Rove NRB 2018 with Shimano Tiagra throughout. I have brought it to my LBS where he adjusted everything and it works fine on the rack. I rode it on the way back and shifted once up onto the big ring but when I went do a ride, nothing happens. Tempted to take it to another LBS so I won't face the embarrassment of facing him again. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, if it was working in the repair stand it should be working for you. Sounds like the mechanic should have offered some shifting tips. I’m assuming there are some clicks or shifts still available in the shifter. When pressing the downshift lever push it firmly and push it twice or may times. Yet the same thing when upshifting. You may not be pressing hard enough. Depending in the shifter two attempts may be in order to fully activate the full movement of the front derailleur. Let me know.

@waisinglee15096 жыл бұрын
@@BikeTeacher I tried upshifting for half an hour yesterday on my ride, a few minutes on my home stand, and another 15 minutes right now with no success. The shifter either moves all the way or it stops after a few mms if I try a half shift then full shift up. I would then downshift several times in order to "clear" it and then try again. I'm beginning to wonder if the shifter is defective?

@@waisinglee1509 you got it. Just replaced all the cables for a lady at our "Repair Cafe". She already bought new shifters, like $25au. But this was an old bike. Naturally, the rear derailleur usually dies first, meaning bikeshops throw out perfectly good front shifter switches all the time, being that they come in pairs. Just take it back to where you got it. They can diagnose it, fix it and replace shifter, if required. Don't mean to confuse, but just because a part is new does not mean it is good.

My issue was the opposite, easy to up shift difficult to down shift, I'll try the opposite tonight!

Best video I’ve found about this so far. I have created issues though. I aligned the front derailleur and Everything fell down when I loosened the clamp. I then had to loosen the cable to get the derailleur back in place, and now everything is completely out of working range. When I shift to the 2nd ring in the front, the chain shifts from 1st to 2nd in the rear.. Now fix my problem with some better advice. What position should my cable housing tensioner nut be in when I reconnect the cable? All messed up in VT. It was all working, and now it’s not.

Start from scratch, loosen the cable pinch bolt, make sure the shifter is in the 1st gear, double and triple check this. realign the front derr to the old mark if available, make sure cage is inline with the chainring as well, nor angled. Hopefully you did not touch the limit screws at all. Gently pull on end of cable while testing shifting, leave shifter in 1st gear. Reattach cable. You asked about "cable housing tensioner nut" I assume you mean barrel adjuster? Half way in , half way out.

Bike Teacher , thanks, the barrel adjusters is what I was referring to. I managed to get the first 7 gears selecting well enough. I gave up on any other gears from the front chain rings. I decided I didn’t need them anyway. Most of my riding is slower and on dirt roads. I get plenty of speed from G7 and use all brakes going down hills, more than enough speed for bike paths too. For any future improvements I would have to replace cables,cable housing and chain. The front derailleur is ancient and that would need an upgrade as well. So I’m Happy with an old bike with semi functioning gears for now.
