Thank you for this informative video. May I ask about the type of strings you are using? I noticed that some instruments have thicker strings and sound different. The new strings I bought for the tanpura are thiner than I expected and I am not getting this beautiful sound.

I hear you tuned tanpura with the pitches of A#4, A#4, A#3 and F3. Usually I saw tanpura tuned with C-G pitches. Can I also tune it in A4-A4-A3-E3? And will it sound good in that tuning? I want to use real tanpura in one my songs and it seems that the tuning of the song causes some problems. Thanks!

Sorry, I missed this question. You will need a male Tanpura for those pitches.

Thanks for this very informative video. I have a technical suggestion and another historical question. 1. Pls demo how to use the fine tuning Mani and Javhari. 2. In the beginning you said the octaves for which the male and female tanpura are tuned are different. Has this practice gone through a change from the past? I am told that in the old days everyone used to tune like the one you said for females.

Hi Shoonnya, I use an application that I downloaded on my cell phone, called VOCALIST, which shows the pitch of each note played or sung, it's very good, easy to use. I downloaded it from the mobile PlayStore. When I play the tanpura string I see which note is being registered on it and I tighten it more if I need to raise the pitch or loosen it to lower the pitch. If I want to compare, I play the note on a musical keyboard and see what pitch is showing in the VOCALIST app and make adjustments to the tanpura string. Too easy.

Hi Urmi, thanks for the video! I have a doubt: in your tuning scheme you said that for men tune P. (low octave), S - S (midle octave) and S. (low octave) and for women P (middle octave) and S' -S' (high octave) and S (middle octave). I'm a Brazilian singer and I sing on the (S)B3-(P)F#4-(S')B4 scale. I bought a female flat tanpura and its strings, but the tuning didn't go up to B4, so I was told that tanpuras don't reach this tuning and the singer has to tune in B2-F#3-B3 and sing an octave higher. I wanted to know if it's true, if that's right?

Zabardast, cheers from Canada....I know what u r saying but my Android Tanpura App....has First String and Pitch icons....for First String it says Sa, Re, Ga etc. And, for Pitch it says C, C sharp etc....so if I sing Ajeeb Daastan in Key C....what should the First String and Pitch icons be set at?
