Learning to tune drums is like learning to ride a bicycle: even if you have someone showing you how to do it, you’ll need to practice over and over until the balance is just right. It’s all about trial and error.
Tuning drums really is about personal preference. It can take some time to find the heads, tension, and pitch that you like the most. It’s not rocket science; you just have to put in the work. Once you have a method and sound that works for you, eventually you won’t even have to think about it.

If you’re a beginner at tuning I recommend getting an Evans torque key. It’s got a little mechanism on it that you can dial in and when you torque the tension rods it clicks when you’ve gotten them to the desired tension so you can get them all in the same ball park and fine tune from there. It helps me out tremendously

Jared, I am a 64 year old woman (not at heart!) learning the drums FINALLY. I have to say you are a wonderful teacher! You explain everything so anyone could understand it. I have wanted to play since I was 7 years old, and for many reasons it did not work out. I want to learn enough so I can play in my worship band at church. THANK YOU so much for helping me live out my dream! God bless you!

Hey! And me! I’m 67 and have ALWAYS been transfixed by the drums in every band I’ve ever listened to. Two months ago I was gifted a ‘glittery red’ drum set-it’s a bit ropey and distressed but I’ve got it set up above our garage far away from anyone else and I’m spending about an hour a day just going through you tube videos for beginners and learning. My aim is to play in our worship band in September. This I really need! I’m going to try to tune them up now. I love playing! Why did I wait so long?

ANY musician has to develop critical listening skills and apply them when tuning and performing...that should be a given. This video isn't about developing critical listening skills and it would be many hours long if it was. You need to go do ear training instead of wrongly assuming a 19 minute tuning video will grant you perfect pitch.

Nicholas Teo Jorquan like stretching new strings, fresh anything tends to try to go back to its original form (out of tune) so your stretching it to set on the bearing edge of the drum

I consider myself a novice. A beginner even. (after years of "playing") And while I have done all of what you and other pro's do, it never ceases to amaze me how good it makes me feel to know I am NOT doing it wrong. lol. I set my 1st kit up based off of how I thought it should be. I started my stick work on how I thought it should be.(grip, style) Then after some time(unknown months) I looked up whether what I was doing was wrong or bad. Come to find out, there is NO WRONG to it. It is always about personal comfort and preferences. Pro's will admit after 20+ years they are still reconfiguring their kits. Still adjusting things. Tinkering. And having epiphanies decades later. I should have done this years ago! lol. My 1st major epiphany had to do with the angle my toms were at. After months of an extreme angle, (because I seen someones kit that way)I adjusted the pieces to a flatter position and wholly @#$%! I should have done that months ago! lol I don't know that I will ever feel like I am past a beginner, but I know that no matter how bad I play, I am in good company when it comes to set ups and the mechanics of all this.

Jared, I'm 58 starting over playong drums relearning almost everything. Anyway. I use the same method tuning my drums as you. I learned as a kid from my best friends brother who is one of the best southpaw drummers I've ever seen. The only difference is the muffling technique for the bass drum. A felt gauze strip is laid across the inside of the resonance head then tuned. Many disagree because the beveled edge of the drum may be affected. Then to get a deeper sound a felt pad is placed on the batter head where the beater meets the head. In my l opinion it has a good deep sound without using blankets or towels as mufflers. Thanks to Drumeo it's helps relearning technique while educating me on the changes/upgeades on the hardware.

I use no resos except for snare. Randomly picked up this habit after two tours in a seventh generation Toyota Corolla with a four-piece Americana band... drums, bass, two guitars. Amps and even a small P.A. Drums had to stack inside each other inside a cartop carrier. I now love the sustain and control of using a single head. I feel like I can get a lot of different sounds out of each drum. Side note: We broke the key to the cartop carrier at one point, and I had to have my arm out the window holding it shut for six hours a day for three days. HAHAHA. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

A tuning question: I have a Yamaha Recording Custom set with 8x10, 9x13 and 16x16 toms. The 10" is a TT910RA model, the 13" is a TT913RC model and the 16" floor tom is a TT916RF (power size) model. I had the 10 and 13" mounted on the bass drum with a Yamaha tri-mount with a small splash cymbal on a small boom stand in the third spot on the tri mount. Heads are Remo black suede. I have the rack toms tuned in a way that I like. I have them probably 3/4 of the way out on the Yamaha hex rod (they're "pre YESS" mounts). They sing nicely. Here's the problem. When I have the cymbal stand mounted in that third spot on the tri mount, the 10" tom totally chokes! Doesn't matter if there's a cymbal on the cymbal arm in the tri mount or not. Just the weight of that arm in the tri mount chokes the 10" tom right out. So I figured I would mount my rack toms OFF of the kick drum on a heavy cymbal stand to see if that would open the 10" up. NOPE! Even with NO cymbal on the stand and the drum mounted by itself on the Yamaha hex rod coming out of the ball and socket mount, it chokes. Doesn't matter where on the hex arm I have the drum or how tight the attachment bolt/nut is. I can hold the drum by the rim and it sounds great or I can mount it on top of the kick drum and it sounds great, as long as I don't put anything else in that third tri-mount spot. My next step is to either just forego putting anything in that third tri-mount spot OR....get a suspension mounting system like Pearl Optimounts. But WHY would this 10" tom not sing when mounted all by itself on a stand?

I think a really big thing to consider here is that many people think that tuning alone is going to get them a really focused and rich tone because of what they see and hear on the internet. Drums will NEVER sound processed, compressed, and EQ’d just from tuning techniques, so knowing, accepting, and working with that fact is essential when starting out.

In the last 3 months, I have been watching KZbin videos to develop technique and to really learn how to play. Your videos have improved my abilities faster than I ever would have imagined. I've been practicing heel-toe for about 6 weeks, and it is now making its way into my playing in a natural way. Thanks for making drumming seem like something anyone can do. I've played stringed instruments since I was 11(36 now), and drumming for 2 years has even improved those skills. (Ex. Coming back around to the 1 in free form jamming seems more natural and relaxed, so much less anxiety about where to go and how to get back to the groove).

Jared, I suscribed to Drumeo . I'm being lazy and not practicing the basics and the rudiments. Going to change that now. I notice in this vid and many others , that most folks use coated Evans batter heads and clear reso heads, presuming to be Evans as well. I have a cheap kit, Grammon, as a xmas gift to get back into drumming after a 50 year layoff. A xmas gift from my wife. What heads do you prefer? I replaced the my stock cheap heads with Remo Ambassadors on the Toms and a Remo Emporor onthe snare - hate the snare drum , but thats another topic- replaced the batter head on the kick drum with a clear Aquarion. Thst works well. Your advice is much appreciated. Happy Drumming everybody . Love tge Woodstock era music, my music.

I use a marimba mallet to hear the fundamental note. I always tighten by 90 degree turns even smaller when fine tuning. I like tuning to exact notes so that i can depend on my drums sounding the same everytime I play. Also it allows me to only tighten when they go out of tune which is not very often. But I play in a way that doesn't dent heads or break sticks so i can't speak for everyone

Jared I have come to the conclusion the Drummers have to most customization to their instrument. With that said the #1 Rule to Drums is you setup to what you like for your own sound! Weather it be you Cymbals, Drums (as in Brand of Shells), Drum Heads and setup / tuning.

I watched this a while back and again today. The floor Tom is usually the challenge. Do you try cotton balls in floor Tom ever?

**ARRGHH** ...I generally spend about 4 months tuning top/bottom heads and then equal intervals between toms.. I think the key to tuning toms accurately, is to hire someone else to do it.. Jared is an awesome guy...Humble,talented and knowledgeable.

I like Evans UV1 & Remo Clear Emperor heads. For the snare, I'll quickly throw on the studio Moby Dick solo at the part where the snares are off and you can really hear the G# note on the snare. I like the Bonham pitched snare or a brighter, tighter Stewart Copeland sound. Toms are tuned by ear. Similar to your method - just tune until you hear what you want to hear.

his strategy is much less complicated especially for beginner drummers like me he has basically the same result but he doesn't have really expensive drums in his videos that already sound great.

Thanks, Jared--good video! I'm a 65 year-old disabled Veteran (spinal trauma and TBI) who tired of weekly physical and occupational therapy appointments. Decided to re-teach myself on how to play the drums to establish coordination and brain processing. Bought a Ludwig 7-piece kit with the intention to learn how to tune myself with 'later on' help from you! When installing the heads, I some how knew to finger tighten and eventually tension batter and resonance head two turns each. Amazing results--watched your video and you provided me with the advanced skills--especially with the snare drum AND, the importance to tune to 'what sounds good in my head'. Recently bought some 'Mutt Muffs' (canine hearing protection) for my service dog Layla (named after my favorite Clapton song) for wear during my incessant pounding on the kit! Well on to your next video (kit set-up) 'Rudiments On', Jared--Bruce sends.

Do you think possible to do a complete tutorial(batter end resonant head) with the tunebot for who, like me, find difficult to tune only by hear? Hope you understand....

If you want a different youtuber who's whole thing on drum tuning is "don't overthink it", is concise and quick on how you do it check out Rob Brown. I watched his video yesterday on this topic and I think mine sound much better. Did all my drums much quicker than I expected. I'm not saying don't watch this one, you might learn something from it, but if you want a quick way to just literally tune up your Toms (he has a separate one on the snare since it's done a bit differently) then you might wanna watch his video.
