Hi Mike. Would you consider showing us how to cut the small Christmas trees with the carbide cutters? Thanks Larry
@MikePeaceWoodturning4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. Feedback indicates maybe 10% of my viewers use carbide so I will keep this in mind. Currently I do not have a set of flat carbide tools but am considering getting some for folks seeking lessons with carbide.

What did you use to turn the burn? I use a wire without very good success. Nice skills on the gouges and the skew. Jim
@MikePeaceWoodturning3 жыл бұрын
Most any wire will work. I have been using a set of guitar strings for years. Speed 1800 to 2500 rpm. Press the hand in back down so you will get maximum wire on the piece for lots of friction.

Mike, I have recently enjoyed watching your videos, especially the Christmas Trees. I am sort of new to wood turning, after many years of mostly scrollsaw work. I have a Jet mini (or midi?) lathe. What would be the best bowl chuck for me to buy in the range of $75 to $125 range. Make and model please. William Rush, Demopolis, Alabama.

Go to my Amzon shop link in the video description and look at the Nova chuck direct threaded for 1x8tpi. It is available now from one vendor for $105.

Thanks Mike. My wife has requested Christmas Ornaments for one of my serious first woodturning projects, so this video is timely to say the least. Would you mind giving some insight to the various lathe speeds you were using? For you a no brainer, but for a beginning turner, every detail is important, like lathe speed. I think you were running around 1500 rpm for everything but the cut off, which I am guessing is around 500 rpm. Thanks again.
@MikePeaceWoodturning3 жыл бұрын
Great question. I generally part off at about 1000rpm. Turning speed may be from 1500 -2500 depending on the wood hardness, particular tool and the length and whether I have some tail stock support. Turn at a speed that is comfortable but as your tool control improves, experiment with faster speeds.

I really enjoyed this video. I am a very new beginner and when I started this project, my parting tool is burning the wood and getting very hot. What am I doing wrong? I am trying to make sure I have a sharp tool and going in straight. Please advise.
@MikePeaceWoodturning4 жыл бұрын
Watch my video on parting tools. Sounds like You are not taking an adjacent clearance cut so it is binding.
@chrisstoner68404 жыл бұрын
In making the trees, he didn't widen the cut. It was just the width of the parting tool.

@MikePeaceWoodturning5 жыл бұрын
Any size you like. You will notice the pictures of the blanks showed a ruler at 5". Another scene showed me cutting consturction lumber that is typically 1 1/2" thick. Play with them and experiment. Don't make them too large or they will be too heavy for an ornament which should probably not exceed 2 oz.
