How to turn a Satellite Dish into a Solar Cooker - Roasting S'Mores

Craig Beals turns an old TV Satellite Dish into a Parabolic Mirror Solar Cooker. First, he removes the paint, then attaches a reflective coating and then takes the new solar cooker into the sun. This is a fast, cheap and easy project to harness the energy of the sun and see how quickly the solar heat can cook...or burn...food.

Recreated this myself with a recovered dish. Thanks for the tutorial! I found that reflective duct work tape works very well! It's a metallic tape that looks just like the strips you made there.

You got me thinking. I've seen half-cylinder reflectors. They don't focus as well so don't as hot but do not need to track the sun as well either. I may make one using a leftover round heating duct split lengthwise and a bicycle rim cut in half to hold it in shape. Parabola might be better... I could bend the bike rim to achieve this shape.

Way back in 70's satellite dishes were huge, 6 - 8 feet, and up. As they got replaced with smaller dish antennas, you could get the old ones for nothing.. I found one at least 12 feet, wish I had kept it now.

Great video! You did a good job showing the close ups of sanding and adding the mirror strips to the dish. I've been debating how much to sand my satellite dish down before I add the strips. Do you think taking it down to the metal is best, or just take off enough to get rid of the orange peel effect?

I would go down to metal. Your mirror tape will stick better and most tape is slightly transparent so the polished steel underneath adds a layer of reflectivity.

Is it really going to make it more reflective? I saw these polished much much better and no reflectors were ever needed. I feel like you just didn’t take your the polishing of the satellite far enough.

Satellite dishes are not good for cooking. Too much hassle in keeping the pot horizontal and keeping it in focus. Every video I see is just playing around with them without a serious effort to do day to day cooking. They are good for baking and roasting though. Think GosunSport combined with a satellite dish. I fixed a horizontal black gutter pipe to the end of the supporting rod into the focal point. I load it with food packed in aluminum foil. Think chicken, with potato and veggies. Cover both ends of the pipe. In 40 minutes the food is ready. The pipe is lightweight. No water weight. The rod supports this much food without problems. My pipe oven is 50cm long.
