Just watched this with my 10 year old son. He turned his first two pens. Never saw him so excited about woodworking. Thanks for the great instruction.

That's awesome! Glad it worked for you.

Thanks for the video. I would suggest you clamp a simple zero clearence fence to your chop saw fence with a clamp on each side. It will help you avoid having your fingers drawn into the blade when it picks the piece of timer out of your fingers.

turned my first pen this week. my wife was so impressed that I think I'm on a promise. thanks for the video. I found an old broom handle in my workshop and used that as some blanks. got to experiment with basic stuff I guess.

Hey man, just call them "Broompens" and you'll have a multi million dollar empire :D :D

I use a Zebra Z grip click pen parts as my pen kit to make turned pens as it writes better than a slimline kit and cost less than $1 per pen from Amazon. No inner sleeves are used when using a 4 inch long pen blank. Have you tried this method?

Great tip! I have not used that before.

I have made a few slimline pens but am disappointed with the refills that came with the kits as they are a little blotchy. Can you suggest a better quality refill. Thanx Graham

Helen Burdett Hmm.. I've mainly made slimline pens. Price seems right. I have heard good things about "summit" pens, but I've never actually made one.

I have just started making these pens but I am having an issue with the wood cracking on the end when I press the transmission in the lower part of the pen. Have you had this problem? Do you have any tips on how to prevent the cracks? Thanks and great video!
@Woodlogger10 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan, sorry I think I've only had that happen once when I was using a soft wood for a pen I made. I know cheap softwood will do that. Not sure if that is the same case for you or not?
@ryanchapman257110 жыл бұрын
The wood I was using was bubinga and also olivewood. The pen kits came from Rockler but I have recently purchased some kits from another company with better results (the transmission doesn't seem to be as hard to press into the barrels). I think I also need to invest in a pen press, I was using quick clamps and it seemed put pressure at an angle when pressing them together. Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work!

Hi. I also turn pens but I apply CA Glue...... a mess every time. I ordered EEE ultrashine and Shellawax. Maybe I'll get lucky. I meant to ask you: how many coats of each? Thanks buddy.
@Woodlogger11 жыл бұрын
I usually do two coats of the EEE, and then just a single coat of the shellawax. It's really good stuff.
