Tried spraying with Viakal Limescale spray. Worked last year but not this. Tried your way but don't have the strength in wrist after breaking it last year. So soaked kitchen towels in White Vinegar and wrapped it around and left for an hour. Came back and tried your way again. It worked l am so pleased. Thank you for Video. From now on every 3 months l am going to turn it on and off.

Brilliant- freed up a stopcock that I don't think had been turned for years-all a bit of a panic as I live in a flat and had to turn off the mains water to prevent flooding below

I love you! Someone told me there is a way to turn off further along pipe. I cannot remember what they called it. Couldn't see further along anyway as back board of cupboard covers it all.

Al what do you do if you have the opposite problem ie the stop cock won't turn on even though the tap handle turns freely? The building is a two storey flat built in the late 1920s & the tap is located in the loft next to the water tank feeding cold water to bathroom & hot water cylinder. Ps I enjoy your informative vlogs immensely thank you.
@dereton335 жыл бұрын
Hi Alun, the tap handle is spinning around, so take it off and turn the brass shank with a small spanner or grips.

Great video as always. I have a pair of these on the output of my cold water tank which have seized I was contemplating replacing them with a Pegler lever valve as I've been told they are way less troublesome. What are your thoughts please?

Stillsons is a very good idea. Thank you. I suppose less risk of shearing the head completely like that. Being careful not to scratch the spindle where it needs to pass through the gland, of course: I guess it depends how long the spindle is.

After freeing a seized up stopcock, would you recommend turning it periodically to prevent the issue reoccurring? Would say every 6 months be enough? Great helpful video :)
@dereton335 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, yes every 6 months would be fine.

What do you do tho when the tap is in a position that doesnt allow for that to happen? Ie stillsons cant turn? I have this issue and I cant really acces tge tap at all due to the enclosure its in. Its on a central system that feeds a block of flats.
@dereton334 жыл бұрын
You have to renew the tap.

Do you recommend giving the stopcock a little twist round every now and then to keep it moving or is that inviting trouble?
@dereton336 жыл бұрын
That will always keep it free and moving, if the gland nut starts to weep a bit you can always give it a tighten.

I tried WD40 before watching and yes it did nothing. Thanks for the tip about removing the handle bit (didn't even know that was possible. I'm really struggling to get the packing nut to move, used quite a bit of force but still no joy. Not really wanting to put more force on it in case I damage it. Any ideas on how to get around this ? or is it time to cough up for a plumber

I just freed up 2 internal stop cocks that had been stuck for years. I used 3 in 1 oil and WD40 and left over night. I think the WD40/3 in 1 helped but I can't be certain.
