In part 2 of How to Turn a Twig Pot, I show my finishing technques including how to part off and finish the bottom using the old school method as well as using a vacuum chuck. I have a slide show at the end showing various twig pots to provide you some inspiration.
Missed Part 1? Click here • How to Turn a Twig Pot... where I demonstrate how to turn a lovely little twig pot or weed pot. This simple spindle project is great for beginners or experienced turners alike. The approach I show uses a glue block on a threaded wood or metal face plate and can be done without the use of a scroll chuck.

Braw wee pots Mike. Got a new lathe just before Christmas and have made a few of the threaded glue blocks after watching your video on making them. They are great and can be used in many applications including as small sanding pad set-up. Or an MDF strop to hone small blades. The gallery of pots was a nice inspiring touch. Thanks

Thanks to AlfFisher for catching a bad link to my website in the description. I added a link near the end of the video that will open up a new window to my website where you can download a copy of a handout I made on this project.

I only just now figured out that EEE is named for Tripoli abrasive. Lol.

Also the short name for UBeaut EEE from Australia. I prefer my DIY version that I made a video on.

@@MikePeaceWoodturning I just made your recipe yesterday - first abrasive paste I’ve used. I turned a lidded bowl in cherry and finished with shellac, your abrasive paste, and shine juice. Worked quite well, and very cheap compared to yorkshire or acks. I usually finish with tung oil or blo, and prefer not to use a sanding sealer - so I may try the paste w/o sealer or even make it with blo or tung oil.

Howdy Mike! I have some green dogwood and spalted sweetgum that I would like to do this with. Question: You said that this could be done with dry or wet wood, if making a twig pot from green wood, how does one prevent the wood from checking? Is it because of wood grain orientation? Would love to know so I can start making these pretty pots!!! Thanks!

Generally, smaller spindle turnings will have no cracking with the occasional exception. After turning, put it in a paper bag for a few days to slow down the drying if you do get cracking but doubt if this would be necessary except in very dry climates in which case you may want to add wet shavings. Adding wet shavings is never a good idea in Georgia where we generally have high humidity as it leads to mold.

+AlfFisher Thanks for being my beta tester! I was able to put the hypertext link in the description, finally. I was having problems with that earlier and forgot to come back and try again. I also added a link near the end of the video that should take the viewer to my list of resources on my website where they can download a handout on this project. Let me know if this works for you now.
